Feldman, Publisher VOLUME 79 - NO. 07 Team Academic Excellence Award De La Salle is pleased to announce that its 2018 varsity baseball team was honored with the Team Academic Excellence Award by the American Baseball Coaches Association. In all, 294 college and high school programs from across the country were honored. There were six schools from Illinois recognized with De La Salle being the only Catholic high school as well as the only school from Chicago. In order to receive this plaudit, teams must have a minimum collective grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale during the academic year. A Benefit for Ryan Lee A benefit for baby Ryan Lee Spizzirri will be held Saturday, September 8 at De La Salle High School, 3455 S. Wabash. Ryan Lee was born six weeks early with an intestinal artesia (Short Bowel Syndrome). After three surgeries in five months, and complications from the surgeries, Ryan lives with intestinal failure and is growing on a nutritional life support of total parenteral nutrition and IV lipids. The hope is to get Ryan into a top intestinal rehabilitation program as soon as possible, to finally feed her and prevent more drastic surgeries and complications in the future. Ryan s parents, Leanne and Timmy, have already suffered a great deal financially. Leanne had to give up her gift shop business, Hardscrabble, and Tim has to take off work as a local One Iron worker. SPRED Program Seeks Volunteers We are beginning another year of the program called SPRED, special religious deveiopment, at the Archdiocesan SPRED Center on 30th and Lowe Avenue above the chapel. It is a program of growing in faith within a small community of faith for children, adolescents, young adults, or adults who live with developmental or intellectual disabilities or learning problems. It is a place of growing in friendship for these people especially in coming to know the Lord. We are looking for families who have a person who could benefit from the SPRED program of any age or ability. We are seeking adult volunteers who want to become involved and be a friend to a person with special needs within a small faith group. If you are interested in leaming more about SPRED, visit our website at or call Elizabeth at , ext Call and ask questions so you can learn more about this program. Men and women who want to consider the SPRED program need no prior experience with people with special needs. We are looking for people who have a warm and loving personality, who are open to forming friendships with others, and who want to grow in their own faith in a God who loves. We have a SPRED parish chairperson who represents their pastor from St. Gabriel parish who works with us at the SPRED Center. She is an outreach to these families and to her parishioners who might want to become involved. We hope other area parishes will appoint a SPRED parish chairperson. The SPRED program is different than the religious education program in a parish. We form a small faith community of eight adult volunteers who welcome six friends of a particular age group. Come and help us welcome these people from all the area parishes. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22nd, 2018 Troop 671 at Camp Owasippe Members of Boy Scout Troop 671 sponsored by St. Jane de Chantal Holy Name Society attended Summer Camp at the Owasippe Scout Reservation in Twin Lakes, Michigan the week of July 21st. Scout activities were swimming, water tubing, fishing offshore in a row boat, horse rides, gaga ball tournoments, rifle range, O / A ice cream social, vespers (non denominational religious service), O / A ceremonies, trail hiking, fire building, Unit service projects and camp fires. Adult activities were daily leaders meetings, cope courses (high adventure courses), ATV certification, muzzle powder load and shoot as well to compete for the Go university credits. Scouts earned the following merit badges: Swimming, First Aid, Chess, Movie making, Game design, Camping, Enviromental science, Archery and Nuclear science. First year campers also attended the Pathfinder program and at weeks end, the Troop earned the Baden Powell award. Rush University Medical Center to Provide Cardiology Services at Mercy Hospital & Medical Center Rush University Medical Center cardiologists will join with the medical staff of Mercy Hospital & Medical Center to provide comprehensive general and interventional cardiology services at Mercy Hospital. Beginning Monday, August 6, Rush and Mercy cardiologists will provide services on the Mercy Hospital campus at 2525 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago. This includes inpatient care, emergency consults, invasive procedures and outpatient cardiology care. "Having Rush physicians at Mercy will give our heart patients the convenience of a local hospital and the subspecialty expertise of a leading academic medical center," said Carol L. Garikes Schneider, president of Mercy Hospital. Mercy has received a five-star heart attack rating 11 years in a row from Healthgrades and has also been recognized for coronary intervention excellence, heart failure treatment and stroke care. Since 2015, Mercy has also been named a high performing hospital in the treatment of heart failure and COPD by U.S. News & World Report. Dr. Alan Jackson, Rush Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), will serve as chief of cardiology at Mercy Hospital and Dr. Payman Sattar, Rush Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), will serve as medical director of cardiac catheterization lab services. Having the patients primary care physician and cardiologist at Mercy will enable coordinated follow-up care while keeping patients in their communities. The Sixth Annual Midway Fly Away 5k Family Run And Walk The Midway Fly Away 5K Family Run and Walk lands at Midway International Airport on Sunday, September 16, offering runners, walkers, and families an incredible race experience. Offering breathtaking views of the city skyline, and an up close and personal look at the jumbo jets taking off and landing, the Midway Fly Away 5K Run and Walk takes place directly on the airfield of Midway International Airport and is open to all ages and fitness levels. Now in its sixth annual year, the race benefits the 7500 athletes of the Special Children s Charities/Special Olympics Chicago. Registration is now open by visiting in advance of the event. Race participation is $40 for adults, and $20 for children 16 & under; The Midway Miler, open to kids 10 and under, is $15 per child. On-site registration will be available for $50 for adults. Special Olympics athletes with valid medicals on file run for free. Registered participants will receive a souvenir race t-shirt, post-race refreshments and free parking in the Midway Airport Economy Parking lot, located across the street from the Southwest Airlines Hangar, at 5050 West 55th Street. A variety of pre-race activities, including raffles with amazing prizes, as well as a myriad of family activities such as face painting, and much more, will take place at the event hangar on the airfield. Cash prizes will be awarded to the overall top three male and female participants. The Midway runner, the person who places in the middle of the race, will also win Southwest Airlines tickets. Those who raise more than $250 will automatically be entered to win two round-trip Southwest Airline tickets to anywhere in the continental United States that Southwest Airlines flies with no restrictions or blackout dates. First place male and female winners will also be awarded a prize package. Medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place male and female winners in a variety of age groups. All registered participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Doors to the Southwest Airlines hangar will open at 8 am. The Southwest Airlines Hangar is located at 5035 West 55th Street at Midway Airport. Upon arrival, participants will be shuttled to the event hangar on the airfield. All participants are required to bring a photo id for check-in, and must arrive prior to 8:30 am. Shuttle service will end promptly at 8:30 am. No backpacks/bags will be allowed on the course, however, there will be gear check available the day of the race. No wheels, including strollers, bicycles, tricycles, rollerblades, inline skates, will be allowed on the airfield. Special Olympics was born in Chicago at Soldier Field more than 50 years ago. The Chicago program is now the largest in the State of Illinois. Today, there are more than 4.5 million athletes that take part in Special Olympics programs internationally. The Midway Fly Away 5K is presented by the Chicago Department of Aviation at Midway International Airport, Southwest Airlines, and Special Children s Charities/Special Olympics Chicago. Bosley Playground Park Early Childhood Classes Bosley playground, park located at 3044 S Bonfield St, early childhood classes are available starting 9/13/18-11/15/18. Registration is now open online and in person, please call if you have any questions. Classes offered include Tot Spot Thursdays, 10am-10:45am ages 18mo.-4yr., at a cost of $6. In this open play environment, parents and their children make all their own activity decisions. Space and equipment is provided. Arts & Crafts Thursdays, 10:45am-11:30am ages 18mo.-4yr., at a cost of $15. Everyone gets crafty in this creative and fun-filled class. Participants will dabble with all kinds of art material such as paper art and clay projects relating to seasons. Parents must stay with their child. The week of August 5-10, 2018 was definitely a memorable one for students of Santa Lucia School. The annual trip for students in junior high sponsored by the Big Shoulders Fund. The students got to experience the great outdoors and all of God's wonderful creations in nature at the Brush Creek Ranch in Saratoga, Wyoming. Throughout the school year, students studied relevant topics in social studies and science classes to prepare for this magnificent excursion. Accompanied by junior high teacher Mr. Jenrich, students slept under the stars in tents. Accompanied by guides from the ranch, all the students participated in activities which included horseback riding and hiking some very scenic trails. Just like pioneers of years ago, they mined for gold, learned about differentiating animal tracks, and even had a scavenger hunt in the woods. They studied and viewed planets and constellations in real time - seeing so many awesome sights never seen here in the city. For many of the students, it was their first time going camping and "roughing" it the way people did in the past. It gave all the students a true appreciation for the beautiful world around them. Their family grew with the addition of Sean in September, 2002; Michael in October, 2005; William in February 2008 and baby Jessica in November, Jessica was born prematurely and after fighting for life for 9 months died in August, Sunday, October 14, :00-7:00 pm In February, 2016 life gave Tony and his sons a devastating blow with the sudden and unexpected death of Jennifer. Growing old together was no longer an option. Tony lost his wife, best friend and the mother of his three surviving sons. The kidney was removed and found to be cancerous. Rounds of chemotherapy and treatment for the cancer prohibited Tony from going back to work. After fighting the good fight and beginning to feel better, on September 15, 2017, Tony shared the good news with everyone To all my friends and family on Wednesday I received great news on my bone scan results...they were negative! I will continue to feel the love and support from everyone and use it as strength to beat this terrible disease. I'm now able to talk about it with all. KACZOR'S NEVER QUIT! Tony Kaczor In October, 2017, Tony received the news that his cancer is extremely aggressive and invasive, and it is spreading. On November 21, 2017, Tony checked into UIC Hematology/Oncology for his first round of treatment and to begin the battle with this enemy. The new normal was fighting the cancer with everything they have physically, spiritually, emotionally and financially. The financial burden of this battle has been devastating. Tony never quit and fought until the very end. Unfortunately, on June 16th Tony lost his battle and he is now resting in peace. The proceeds of this benefit will be used to offset the everyday expenses of raising and educating three active boys ages 15, 12 and 10 years old. Born June 30, 1948 in Chicago, the daughter of Alex and Anne (Jakovich) Kasper. She attended McClellan Elementary School and Thomas Kelly High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from Southern Illinois University, a Master of Social Work from the University of Chicago, and a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from National Louis University. Jane was a community leader being the Executive Director of El Hogar del Nino (home of the child in the Pilsen and Little Village Communities) for over 30 years. She was godmother to 11 of those children. Jane married Raul Mancillas on December 8, Survivors include husband, Raul; brother, Michael (Mary) Kasper; nephew, Michael Kasper; niece Anne Campbell; grandnephew Logan Campbell; and special foster children, Yaruzy, Yaretzi and Yaendi. Preceded in death by her parents; aunt, Michaelene Smith; and uncles, Henry Smith and Eddie Kasper.
