1 Marketing Rural Properties on the Oak Ridges Moraine An outreach program for realtors working on the moraine Julie Hordowick Toronto and Region Conservation AD Latornell Symposium November 19, 2009

4 Why realtors? Represent one of the first contacts a new landowner makes in a community. Often make service referrals to clients Provide information (correct or not) about what can/can t be done on property

5 Reaching the audience Professional licensing requirements for 24 hours of continuing education credits every 2 years Accreditation process through Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) Partnership with a real estate board or other accredited course provider Almost 250 agents completed our course in the 4 session held in 2008/09

6 Components: 3 hour course with several presentations Stewardship program for rural properties on the ORM (Julie Hordowick,TRCA) Land Securement options for realtors (Orland Conservation) ORMCP overview (CAMC David Burnett) Local implications of ORMCP (Local planning departments) Displays and representatives from Caring for the Moraine partnership Course manual including: ORMCP and mapping, program information from stewardship providers on the moraine, presentation slides

7 Key Messages Stewardship programs can help them sell rural properties Land securement options can make selling large properties easier Understanding the ORMCP alleviates client misconceptions about restrictions/loss of value on their property. Allows realtors to accurately inform clients about ORMCP implications for a land use.

Show me the money! selling the rural lifestyle dream - value-added from providing stewardship information to rural clients Practical examples for applying information Realtor-friendly securement options conservation severance, split receipting, conservation easement neighbourhood Local information about how the ORMCP changes regular transactions such as building permit process

9 Lessons Learned Be persistent and look for key champions in the target audience Be prepared to present credentials and prove the value of the outreach to RECO A lot of paperwork to running your own course Work with existing channels of outreach where available Be available for follow up Don t undersell your services
