Welcome & Introductions
Background Over 10 years ago, the City began looking at the condition of the existing Police Station. The current station is 45 years old and does not meet current seismic and structural building codes. The jail is also not compliant with current correctional standards. The City hired an engineering firm to look at the station and make recommendations on a renovation or new construction. The consultant determined the cost was more to retrofit and renovate than build a new station.
Background A citizen committee made recommendations on the size, location and cost of a Police Facility. In November 2015, the City placed a parcel tax measure on the ballot. The parcel tax measure, Measure PS, failed to pass.
Ad Hoc Committee Following the failure of Measure PS, former Mayor Calaycay formed a 15 person Ad Hoc Committee to review the proposed facility and provide recommendations on the facility design, location, cost, and funding. 25,000 sq ft, $25 million, 25 year financing term The City hired an architect to draft a design for the facility based on the Ad Hoc Committee s criteria. The Committee met for over six months and presented their recommendations to the City Council in July, 2017.
Ad Hoc Committee Final Recommendations New Police Facility Size 26,000 square feet Cost $25 million Location Bonita Avenue existing site Bond Term 25 years Financing Mechanism Parcel Tax Square Footage or General Obligation
Community Outreach The City Council directed staff to gather feedback from the community on the proposed facility, especially the financing mechanism, in anticipation of placing it on a June 2018 ballot. Community meetings planned: September 23 from 9 11 am at the Police Station October 3 from 5:30 7:30 pm at the Police Station October 16 from 5:30 7:30pm at Hughes Center October 19 from 5:30 7:30 pm at the Blaisdell Center
