Obituary New York Times dated February 1, 1956: PERCY VERMILYA, BUILDER, WAS 77: Board Chairman of Company That Erected New York Landmarks Is Dead. Percy S. Vermilya, who retired Jan. 17 as president of the Vermilya-Brown Company, Inc., builders, of 100 East Forty-second Street, died yesterday at his home. He lived in the Mayfair House, Park Avenue and Sixty-fifth Street. He would have been 78 years old today.

3 1173 At his retirement, Mr. Vermilya was elected board chairman of the building concern. Because of a chronic asthmatic condition, he had decided to do his work at home. A recent story in the New York Times on Mr. Vermilya s retirement said that the wooden rolltop desk he was leaving behind squeaks of an era when some of New York s landmark structures went up on nothing more formal than a handshake between sponsor and builder, with sometimes an exchange of letters. These landmark structures, erected in the last 101 years by Vermilya-Brown and its predecessor, Marc Eidlitz, included the Metropolitan Opera House, and J. P. Morgan bank, the original Lord and Taylor store at Grand and Chrystie Streets, and Altman store with horse stables, Macy s and The Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park. The company s modern construction is represented by the newly completed Hospital for Special Surgery, Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive and East Seventieth Street; the latest additions to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the B. Altman & Co. shop in Manhasset, L.I., and Macy s in White Plains. Balked at Job Bidding Mr. Vermilya s company was reluctant to participate in competitive bidding. Until the concern was asked to bid on defense work just before World War II, it had engaged in competitive bidding only once. That was in 1909, when it won a contract for a state library and Supreme Court building in Connecticut. Competitive bidding also brought the company a contract in 1941 for additions to Fort Trumbull in Connecticut, where the Coast Guard trained wartime petty officers. It took nearly five years of persuasion and a war to get him to go into competitive lump-sum bidding, an associate of Mr. Vermilya once said. Mr. Vermilya joined the Eidlitz concern in He became a partner in An ardent golfer until illness compelled him to give up the game four years ago, Mr. Vermilya had been president of the Ardsley (N.Y.) Golf Club and later of the Apawamis Club in Rye, New York. Before his illness, he hardly ever missed a Monday at the opera. His widow, Mrs. Florence Vermilya, survives. Retirement article also on file, but is mostly a repeat of above. The article did mention that he was 5 5 tall with a stocky build. Picture is also included. Obituary of Mrs. Percy S. Vermilya, New York Times dated January 5, 1958: Mrs. Florence Georhegan Vermilya, widow of Percy S. Vermilya a prominent New York builder and president for years of the Vermilya-Brown Company, died at her home yesterday of a stroke. Her age was 77. 10 1180 After Nov. 1 they will live at 3 Cathay Lane, Mattapoisett. Published in the Schenectady Gazette, Schenectady, New York, September 22, Excerpts from Biography -- Broadcast Archives -- Irv Vermilya was know as America s Number 1 Amateur in the world of Amateur Radio. He was born in June of 1890, growing up in Mt. Vernon, New York. Radio was a life long involvement. He built his first rather primitive set in December of 1901, after his trip to see Marconi. At age 16 he was offered jobs on ships that needed a wireless operator and he did indeed go to sea as a wireless operator. A few years later, he was given the important job of running the Marconi Wireless Station on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. During World War 1 he served in the Navy, and then returned to Massachusetts to run the RCA wireless station at Marion. By 1921, professional radio stations were springing up, and Irv began doing radio broadcasts to entertain his neighbors in and around New Bedford and upper Cape Cod. In 1923 he acquired radio station WDAU which he had built and operated for Slocum and Kilburn Company. He moved it to his house in early 1924 where he operated it under the call letters WBBG (The Voice From Cape Cod) until mid Irv continued to play a major role in the radio business until he retired in Depressed by the death of his wife, in failing health, and perhaps feeling the industry he loved so much no longer had a place for him, in late January 1964, Irv Vermilya committed suicide. His death came as a shock to the many people who had admired him; even the New Bedford Standard-Times editorialized about what a fine human being he was, and how much he had contributed to broadcasting. Source Code #127. The full text and a picture of Irv may be seen at (March 1998). Source Code #622: Herald Tribune, January 31, Mattapoisett, Mass. Irving Vermilya, 73, one of the first radio hams in the country, shot and killed himself yesterday at his home here. Mr. Vermilya had been despondent because of his failing eyesight. He was pronounced a suicide by Dr. Raymond H. Baxter, Plymouth County Medical Examiner. Mr. Vermilya was introduced to radio, or wireless telegraphy, as it was then known, when he was 11. His father took him to Goat Hill, Nfldl, in 1901, where Guglielmo Marconi had set up the equipment to receive the first trans-atlantic wireless message. The boy met the wizard of wireless, who gave him a crude wireless receiving set. Thus was fixed an enthusiasm that was to remain with Mr. Vermilya the rest of his life. He absorbed every scrap of information on the subject he could come by, and in 1912 he was notified that he had passed the examination for an operator s license. The examination, the first to be held, was at a number of places throughout the country, so that a number of applicants shared with Mr. Vermilya the distinction of holding the No. 1 license. Throughout his career, which took him aboard many ocean going ships as a radio operator and into various branches of the radio industry, Mr. Vermilya frequently observed that his lucky number was that was the date he went to the New York Navy Yard to receive his license, December 12, He served in the Navy during World War I, and while his various jobs demanded much of his attention, he, like hams the world over, spent most of his spare time with his own equipment. His call letters, W-1-ZE, became known the world over. Mr. Vermilya was an early member of the American Radio Relay League, the ham organization. Not located on census records.

The Mission Inn was the three children s home, just as it had been Allis as a girl. The children also spent many hours in Laguna Beach at the home their grandfather built overlooking the Pacific Ocean. In the late 1930s, the Inn held a Festival of Dolls and Toy Animals; featuring objects collected by Helen and Isabella. A guidebook, published later, provided visitor information on the collection (Hutchings, n.d.). The couple and their three children loved to visit other countries and took many exciting trips around the world. Air travel fascinated them. The newspapers called them the Flying Hutchings family (Riverside Daily Press 12/11/36). Their son Frank even traveled on the Zeppelin Hindenburg in 1936 on a flight from Germany to the United States (Gale, 1938). During World War II, Frank served in the Army Air Corp.
