3 1 William Taylor Married (1) Tabitha Lamarsh Married (2) Ellen Dupuis BRANCH 6 DESCENDANTS OF JOHN & ISABELLA (GILBOE) TAYLOR William Taylor, son of John Taylor and Isabella Gabella Gilboe, was born on 29 September 1852 in Upper Canada (Maidstone Township, Essex County, Ontario) and died in 1918 in Essex County, Ontario. William married Tabitha Catherine Lamarsh, daughter of William C. Lamarsh and Catherine Ann Fox, on 15 June 1875 in Essex. Tabitha was born on 10 June 1859 in Essex, Ontario and died on 8 June William and Tabitha moved to Michigan about 1879 and lived in Birmingham, Michigan. William and Tabitha s first child Ezra was born in Maidstone just before they moved to Michgan where the other three children Carrie, Ada, William, Grover and Ethel were born. (1) Ezra Herman Taylor born in 1878 married Sarah Buckley. (2) Carrie Bell Taylor born in June 1880 married August Burk. (3) Ada Florence Taylor born on 25 May 1884 Ada Florence Taylor married William James Dickman (d. 25 April 1943). Ada died from pneumonia on 6 January 1914 in Pontiac City and was buried at Oak Hill. She left three young children. The children lived with different families after the death of their mother. Merril Gee Dickman born in 1906 was living with his father and his father s second wife Pearl by Florence Ethlyn Dickman was born on 8 September 1908 in Pontiac City, 215

Harry Martin Taylor and Florence Dickman had one son about Russell Taylor Dickman was born on 18 August 1913 in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan and was only five months old when his mother died, went to live with his grandparents Michael and Frances Dickman. (4) William Walton Taylor born on 15 June 1886 married Grace Dianthy Dickman who was the sister of William Dickman who had married Adah Florence. They had four children all born in Michigan - Lloyd Hilton Taylor born in 1911, Frances Ellen Taylor born in 1912, Florence Ada Taylor born in 1919, and Walter Lee Taylor born in (5) Grover Cleveland Taylor born 30 December 1890, moved out west to Manitoba in He later moved to Elkwater, Alberta. He was a rancher when he was drafted for military service, one month short of age 27 on 26 November 1917 at Medicine Hat, into the Albert 1 st Depot Battalion, Alberta Regiment. (6) Ethel Laura Taylor born 26 June 1894 married Harley Gratopp Either in 1908 or shortly after Tabitha died in 1910 William moved to Marquette District, Rapid Cty, near Brandon, Manitoba with his son Grover Cleveland and daughter Ethel Laura. William and his daughter came back to Essex in February 1911 when his father John Taylor died. It is likely they stayed for a time in Pontiac when they returned as Ellen Laura Taylor met Harley Gratopp and they were married in 1913 in Pontiac, Michigan. William also returned to Pontiac, Michigan and married Ellen Dupuis (Dupree) of Pontiac on December 5, In 1916 they are living at 31 Crawford Street, Pontiac Michigan. That house was built in 1910 and is for sale in William and Ellen are still living in Pontiac in the 1920 Census. Since he could not be located in the 1930 census it is likely William died sometime between 1920 and

6 THE MCINTAYLOR TAYLORS 2 ELIZABETH GRACE TAYLOR Daughter of John Taylor & Isabella Gilboe Married George Thornton Elizabeth Grace Taylor, daughter of John Taylor and Isabella Gabella Gilboe, was born on 1 December 1853 in Maidstone Township, Essex County, Ontario, died on 24 March 1923 in Essex, Ontario, Canada, and was buried in March Elizabeth married George Miller Thornton, son of Harrison Thornton and Mary Jones. Harrison and his brother George were Sergeants in the North Ridge Rifles during the time of the Fenian Raids. George was born on 11 July 1854 in Essex, Ontario, Canada, died on 6 January 1899 at his home in Gosfield North after coming down with a severe case of LaGrippe (influenza). He was buried on 8 January 1899 in North Ridge Cemetery, Essex County, Ontario. Services were held at Grace Methodist Church in Essex, Ontario. He was forty-three years old when he died with the funeral from the family residence in Gosfield North, Lot 281, Talbot Road North. Elizabeth Grace and George Miller Thornton lived on Intersection Rd, now known as Fairview Ave. in Essex, Ontario. George was a member of the International Order of the Foresters. Elizabeth sold this farm January Children from this marriage were: 1. Delmer Forest Thornton, born 4 January, 1880, married Hattie Henwood of Walkerville, daughter of Mrs. And Mrs. W.H. Henwood on November 17, They lived at th Street, Walkerville, Ontario. He was a distiller at Hiram Walkers and later had a transport business. He died in London, Ontario 4 May Mary Carlola Bell Thornton was born on 3 June 1882 in Essex, Ontario, Canada, died in September 1941, and was buried in September 1941 in Cottam (Trinity) Anglican Churchyard. Mary married John Joyce, son of William Robert Joyce and Mary Archibald, on 27 March 1907 in Gosfield North Township. John was born on 25 December 1880 in Maidstone Township, County Of Essex, died on 19 November 1968, and was buried on 22 November 1968 in Cottam Cemetery, Gosfield North Township, 218

George married Grace Eleanor Christie granddaughter of Alexander Duncan Taylor and Carrie (Dewhirst) Taylor 3. Myrtle Eulalia Thornton was born on 3 February 1885 and died in March 1945, and was buried in March 1945 in North Ridge Cemetery, Gosfield North Township. Myrtle married Charles Robinson in February Sylvia Maureen Thornton was born on 6 August 1888 in Gosfield North, died in August Sylvia married Folk Walter Voge on 1 September 1917 in Pontiac, Michigan. 5. Archie Mackenzie Thornton was born on 24 April 1890 in Gosfield North, died at two months on 28 June 1890 in Essex, Ontario. The Thornton Family Richard Thornton was one of early English settlers in Essex County. He was born 20 September 1794 in Yorkshire, England and came to Pennsylvania and married Esther Harrison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1816, Esther was born 19 June 1790 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mary Carlola Bell (Thornton) Joyce with William Ray after winning 1st Prize at the Essex Fair Baby Contest Richard and Esther lived in Philadelphia for a few years, farming near the city. Four of their children were born there. They moved to Canada around 1828 and settled first in Mersea Townshp, Essex County, near where Leamington is today. Richard received a grant of land from Colonel Talbot on North Talbot Road in the Township of Gosfield. They started life as pioneers in a small log cabin in 1828, ten miles from his nearest neighbour. In time he cleared a large farm, and before his death he owned a five hundred acre parcel of land. Richard was a member of the County Council of Essex, representing Gosfield North. In he served as a soldier in the Rebellion, and was a member of the North Ridge Rifles for five years after it was organized in Gravestone of Richard Thornton at Cottam Cemetery 219

8 THE MCINTAYLOR TAYLORS Richard and Esther were among the early founders of Trinity Anglican Church at Cottam. Richard and his son George attended the organization meeting and held at the residence of Squire Billing, on August 7, The contract for the building of the church was given to George Thornton on October 23, Harrison Thornton son of Richard Thornton was born in Leamington, Ontario on 19 October Harrison Thornton married Mary Jones on 29 October He had three brothers, Thomas, Isaac and George, of Essex and six sisters, Mrs. Solomon Wigle, Kingsville; Mrs. Benjamin Gale, Mrs. George Wigle, Ruthven; Esther (Mrs. John Robinson), Essex; Ann (Mrs. John Whittle), Gosfield; and Mrs. James Fulmer, Essex. Harrison & Mary Thornton lived in what was considered one of the finest farms on the Talbot road in Gosfield North for over 50 years. He was a local preacher in the Methodist church and also served in the Gosfield council for a number of years. Harrison and Mary Thornton had ten children- Issac Thornton, George M. Thornton, Scott Thornton, Cassimer Hilliard Thornton, lived in Detroit, Mrs. S. Coatsworth, Mrs. J. Woodiwiss, Kingsville, Mrs. J. Wigle, Mrs. Gregory, Rachel, Adeline. Thomas & Almira Thornton, brother of Harrison Thornton Harrison Thornton died February 23 rd 1895 after having a stroke in 1893, from which he was partially paralyzed and unable to leave his bed. The stroke was followed by heart failure and kidney failure. Two weeks before his death he gathered all his children and held a family worship which he had not been able to do for several months. Harrison Thornton requested that Alex M. Wigle of Ruthven preach at his funeral. The pall-bearers were all nephews James Grove, David Hopgood and Albert and W.S. Cummiford. 220
