1 39 GSSreview Winter m Engineering Faculty The first three phases of the 23m development for the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Leeds have been successfully handed over. The Faculty of Engineering is one of the largest faculties in the UK, grouping together five teaching and research schools with in excess of 700 staff and 3,500 students. The scheme comprises the complex refurbishment of the existing five-storey Houldsworth Building to internally reconfigure the spaces and ensure the building is fit for delivering a modern engineering curriculum. Once fully complete, the development will provide the faculty with new lecture theatres, research laboratories, meetings rooms, modern office space and a range of open plan and flexible teaching and learning zones. GSSArchitecture are acting as Architects and Lead Consultants for the project, having been appointed by Galliford Try from Stage 3 onwards. The project will continue to completion in Summer 2017 in a series of complex phases aimed at keeping the Faculty of Engineering fully operational throughout. The project is just one of a range of engineering buildings currently being designed and delivered by GSS in the Higher and Further Education sectors.

2 From the Editor Central Milton Keynes Office Launch Welcome to the latest edition of the GSS Review. In this issue we will show you a cross-section of our current projects, which cover the whole of the UK. All of our offices nationally are working on a wide range of exciting and varied projects across most sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial, education and healthcare. We have recently been awarded several new commissions and have achieved significant completions for the practice in the Higher Education sector, some of national importance. The stories we have chosen to highlight in this issue include: the launch of our new office in Central Milton Keynes, the new School of Architecture at the University of Reading, the Institute of Cellular Medicine (ICM) at Newcastle University, the National College for Motorsport, and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Leeds. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our clients, who continue to entrust us with projects covering virtually every sector, and look forward to an exciting body of work for the future. I would also like to thank our various teams for their continuous hard work, without whom we would not be able to deliver our service. David Allsop As part of GSSArchitecture s continued sustainable growth and expansion, the practice has recently added a new office in Central Milton Keynes to the three existing offices located in Kettering, Harrogate and Gloucester. The new Milton Keynes office has opened with a number of existing GSS staff, together with new employees, and will be headed up by Associate, Chris Chapman, who has worked for GSS for 26 years, and overseen by Partner, Tom Lyons. The new office will deliver the growing number of projects secured in Milton Keynes and the surrounding region, including many of the practice s London schemes. Tom Lyons said, We have enjoyed a range of recent design success on some very varied and exciting new projects which has allowed us to invest in new staff, provide opportunities for Architectural students and commit to a new office in Central Milton Keynes, to ensure that our clients nationally continue to receive a first class, fully resourced and professional multi-disciplinary service. At the Harrogate office, Matthew Lobley has joined the practice as a Senior Chartered Architect and Stephen Wilson as a Senior Architectural Technologist, whilst Toby Rollason has joined the Milton Keynes office as a Senior Architectural Technologist. As recognised Investors in People, GSS are continuing to offer educational and training opportunities to all staff. Seb Smart and Gabriele Adomaityte, both based at the Kettering office, are continuing onto Part 2 of their Architectural Degrees, after successfully completing Part 1. Also at the Kettering office, Administration Apprentice, Courtney Pallister, is undertaking the next stage of her apprenticeship City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration. Congratulations go out to Ben Garlick on the birth of his son, Robert Bertie Philip Garlick.

3 Parliament Hill GSSArchitecture have successfully gained planning permission for a 25m redevelopment of Parliament Hill School, located in the London Borough of Camden. Attended by over 1,250 students, aged years, the new buildings will include a sports hall, science labs and general teaching classrooms, with a dedicated dining hall building located at the centre of the site. In addition, the project involves the part refurbishment of the remaining Parliament Hill School buildings. The neighbouring William Ellis School, a four-form entry school for boys, will benefit from a new drama and food technology extension and refurbishment works to improve the energy efficiency of their existing buildings. Both of the schools are part of the LaSwap Sixth Form Consortium, and a new sixth form building will also be provided, comprising a unique design that includes a green roof and living green walls. The redevelopment is funded under the London Borough of Camden s Community Investment Programme, and will be delivered in a staged approach in order to allow the teaching services to remain fully operational, minimising disruption to the students education. BREEAM Very Good is targeted for the scheme, as well as performance criteria in excess of the London Plan. New Homes for London Council GSSArchitecture have designed 31 new multitenure homes for Haringey Council, the first council built homes in the borough for more than 25 years. The 12 houses and 19 flats are being delivered under a Design and Build contract, through two phases, across 7 underutilised infill sites within the Borough. GSS have developed individual and site-specific designs to meet the requirements of the Local Authority, the London House Design Guide and Lifetime Homes, and to be fully compliant with Secure by Design and Code 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. The challenging infill sites required innovative design solutions to ensure the amenity and living standards of the new and existing residents were not compromised and, where possible, enhanced. Councillor Strickland commented, Every family in Haringey has the right to live in a modern, affordable, high-quality home, and these first new council houses demonstrate our commitment to making that a reality. The homes have been designed to meet a variety of housing tenure needs from rent, shared ownership and sales, through a delivery programme designed to be self-supporting following the first phase.

4 School of Architecture The School of Architecture at the University of Reading has been successfully completed. The scheme involved the sensitive redevelopment of the Old Library at the University s London Road Campus to facilitate the new faculty. The development provides students with access to dedicated studio spaces and cutting-edge facilities, including an associated workshop with 3D printing and laser cutting equipment. A café area and an external terrace are also available to increase the flexibility of the environment for both private and collaborative study. By working closely with the University, and in particular the School of Architecture, many of the important features of the existing historic building have been retained. The introduction of an external ramp and a lift inside the building makes it accessible to all. GSSArchitecture acted as Architects and Lead Consultants for the development, which allowed the University to establish the new faculty before the first cohort of Architecture students arrived in September of this year. Professor Lorraine Farrelly, Head of Architecture at the University of Reading said, The Old Library has a unique character set in the middle of wonderful landscaped grounds of the University. The redevelopment of the building reinvents the space, offering students a wonderful working environment. The project team have worked very well together to deliver us a building that is sympathetic to its original character and will offer staff and students a wonderful inspiring home for the new School of Architecture.

5 National College for Motorsport A brand new facility for the National College for Motorsport, based in the heart of British Motorsport Racing at Silverstone, has been successfully completed. The National College for Motorsport, run by Tresham College, trains full-time students and apprentices for a career in the Motorsport and High Performance Engineering industry. Past students have gone on to work with a range of motorsport champions across the world, including Formula One teams Lotus, Red Bull, Force India, Manor and Mercedes. GSS acted as Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers for the scheme, which has provided fully equipped workshops, classrooms, meeting rooms and a flexible learning/exhibition space. The facility has been designed to ensure that it is suitable to combine both practical and theoretical training. Rugby School Boarding House Planning permission has been successfully achieved for a new boarding house at Rugby School. GSSArchitecture have worked closely with the school to develop a design which delivers a high quality living and learning environment. The development will provide study bedrooms for 60 pupils, with large communal rooms and main dining room on the ground floor, catering for both students and staff. Additionally, the design includes a rooftop terrace and a double-height atrium, situated at the heart of the building, providing flexible social and study spaces. GSS were delighted to win this project in a design competition, and are acting as Architects and Quantity Surveyors for Rugby School. Bradgate Park Visitor Centre The new Visitor Centre has been successfully delivered at Bradgate Park, and was officially opened by Sir David Attenborough. GSS won the design competition for this development, which has doubled the size of the exhibition space and has created a series of innovative displays which tell the story of the park s natural and human history from 560 million years ago to the present day. The Visitor Centre is the first phase of redevelopment works at Bradgate Park, with the second phase design comprising the re-organisation of the adjacent café area to facilitate more visitors. Sir David Attenborough said, The centre is just what I expected having seen the plans and it is so nice to see it so perfectly executed. Peter Tyldesley, Director of the Bradgate Park Trust said, This is the first phase of an ambitious redevelopment which has been masterplanned for us by GSS. We are now looking forward to the next phase, which will be a redevelopment of our successful Deer Barn Tea Room that will see it increase in size and capacity.

6 The Institute of Cellular Medicine (ICM) GSSArchitecture are on target to deliver flagship ICM Inflammation and Immunology Research Laboratories at Newcastle University. Located in the heart of Newcastle, the new research laboratories will allow ICM researchers to explore advanced scientific developments and thereby attract leading scientists to the Faculty of Medical Sciences to use the new knowledge in order to develop and deliver novel immunotherapies in local clinics. This development is a highly complex project comprising the remodelling and refurbishment of two existing levels within the six-storey William Leech Building to provide modern, open plan research spaces with associated tissue culture labs, isotope labs and associated cold rooms. This is an exceptionally fast-paced project, with an impressive turnaround. GSS were appointed to provide a full one-stop-shop service, based on their expertise in this type of project and their ability to deliver projects to extremely demanding timescales. Initial designs began in March 2016 and completion is scheduled for December Partner-in-Charge Jonathan Hunter said, Newcastle University are a key client for GSS and we are delighted to have been given the opportunity to assist them in the delivery of this important project. The project team have worked well together, in a collaborative way, to achieve the challenging project programme and to meet the client brief. Collingwood College GSSArchitecture have been working with Collingwood College at Durham University over recent months, providing full one-stop-shop services for a series of exciting projects, all of which are aimed at improving the student experience in the vibrant and well-respected College. Construction of a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) has now started on site, following a complex and intricate planning approval process. The new MUGA will provide an all-weather surface to accommodate a variety of sporting activities and has been designed to allow multiple, concurrent sports activities to take place, including football, netball, non-contact rugby training and various cardio fitness activities. The pitch also includes floodlighting to maximise evening use. At the same time, the GSS team have been developing designs for a new build performance space (the Bayley Room), complemented by a new state-of-the-art gym, junior common room and social/study spaces. The Bayley Room will provide a large, flexible stage and seating area and has been specifically designed to accommodate a multitude of College functions, including formal performances, live music and cinema screenings. The new studio and gym have both been designed to provide flexibility and versatility, enabling a variety of activities to take place, such as structured training sessions, dance and yoga.

7 30m London Primary Schools Working with Farrans Construction, GSSArchitecture have recently delivered three new primary schools for the Harris Federation, in and around the London area. The first of these is Harris Primary Academy Mayflower, located in Chafford Hundred. The former container storage site has been transformed into a brand new five-form entry primary academy, which accommodates over 1,000 pupils, making it the largest primary academy in the UK. The innovative design has created a range of flexible teaching facilities, and provides nursery and reception years with access to dedicated external covered areas, as well as increasing the opportunity for a creative curriculum, allowing young people to learn in a variety of different ways. The second project, Harris Primary Academy East Dulwich, is situated on the site of the Old Police Station on Lordship Lane, and has been remodelled into a two-form entry primary academy. The scheme, which was handed over three weeks ahead of schedule, has delivered a bright and modern school with a range of facilities for learning and play. Thirdly, the new build two-form entry Harris Primary Academy Shortlands has also been successfully completed. Accommodating up to 420 pupils, aged 4-11 years, the new facility has provided Bromley with a much needed, welcoming and high quality school. GSS are also working to deliver a further two Studio Schools with Farrans Construction, acting as Architects and Lead Consultants for all projects, which have a combined construction value of 30m.

8 Logic Studio GSS are acting as Architects and Lead Consultants to deliver Logic Studio School, which is part of the Tudor Park Education Trust. The Studio School will be situated in an existing two-storey building, which comprises the former Design Technology and Art rooms of Feltham Community College. Logic Studio will accommodate 300 students, aged 14-19, and will specialise in Computer Technologies, Business Management and Logistics. The development will include a front extension to the school, which will provide a new main entrance and circulation space to the first floor. Additionally, internal spaces will be remodelled in order to meet the new curriculum. The modern and unique design incorporates contemporary workspaces, as well as traditional teaching spaces, to prepare students for their professional careers. The project, funded by the Education Funding Agency via the Free School programme, is currently progressing on site, with completion scheduled for early Studio Schools operate a new approach to learning, which includes teaching through industry-led enterprise projects and work placements to offer a range of academic and vocational qualifications. News in Brief The exciting scheme to expand Corby Technical School from a three-form entry to a six-form entry secondary school started on site this month. GSS are acting as Architects and Principal Designers for this project, which will provide an additional 450 school places in modern, high quality facilities, including new classrooms, ICT suites and flexible open study areas. Priors Hall Park Primary School and Community Centre has been successfully completed. GSS acted as Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers for this development, which has provided a two-form entry primary school, a nursery and a community centre, located at the heart of Priors Hall Park, for Woodnewton Academy Trust. GSS have a key involvement in the Heritage and Conservation sector. Partner William Assheton, who is on the Register of Architects Accredited in Building Conservation, is supervising the repair and inspection of a number of churches nationwide, including St. Andrew s Church, Lyddington, where the 30 clerestory windows are being repaired and replaced.
