STATEMENT The Project consists on the creation of colour inflatable that fills up the space erected by others, providing them of a new identity. A simplification of the space that unifies shapes and textures becoming one, generating a different atmosphere. The balloons are constructed from regular patterns, adjusting each inflatable to the characteristics of each location. The concept works on the relation between the full and the empty, generating a dialogue with the space we inhabit temporarily. Amending the boundaries and fitting the place, the viewer experiments from inside a new ephemeral space. When the inflatable swell, itself use the lines of the building to acquire the shape. The colour will vary depending on the context. The balloon draws new shapes through creases and volumes. We propose continuity projects that allow us to investigate and show our work. Developing an open proposal for collaboration, establishing a dialogue with another interventions, enable to connect with our public. As a references, Christo s and Jean-Claude s recognized work. Moreover, we contemplate at the same time contemporary creators, as Rachel Whiteread, Kimihiko Okada, Doris Salcedo, Hans Hemmert, Michael Landy, Tomas Saraceno y Ernesto Neto, among others.
Event: Women Spring-Summer Collection 2013 Catwalk Space: Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild, Place: PARIS, France Date: 29th of September 2012 maison martin margiela paris fashion week 12 During Paris Fashion Week 2012, the Maison Martin Margiela company commissioned Penique productions to create the scenography for the presentation of their new Spring-Summer collection. The fashion world and Penique productions had another rendezvous at the majestic Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild palace. The aim of this project was to look for ways to connect the common points shared by Penique s work and the fashion company s, which, from its origins, has had close ties to the art world. The installation, which was tailor-made for the space and covered the palace s architecture, was presented as a work of artisanship. The colour white, recurrent in Maison Martin Margiela s presentations, turns the site into a neutral space and the only thing that remains visible are the baroque lamps hanging from the ceilings.
cerveira CREATIVE CAMP Project carried out in collaboration with Canal 180 in Portugal, a channel that is exclusively devoted to producing and disseminating cultural content. The channel organized the first edition of the Cerveira Creative Camp, where the Penique productions team and other national and international artists offered talks and workshops about their experiences to young people interested in art, design and media. The group created the Forum Cultural de Cerveira, an installation with a central lighting element. The project served as a meeting point where various activities were carried out. Festival: Canal 180: Creative Camp Space:Fundação Bienal de Cerveira Indústrias Criativas Place: VILANOVA DE CERVEIRA, Portugal Date: July 2012
Festival: NOVA festival Space: São Paulo: MIS (Museu da Imagem e do Som) Belo Horizonte: Cento e Quatro Barcelona: Galeria Mitte Place: São Paulo, BRASIL Belo Horizonte, BRASIL Barcelona, SPAIN Date: April & May 2012 EN nova Penique productions participation in the NOVA multidisciplinary art festival consisted of installing two works in Brazil: one at the Museu da Imagem e do Som, São Paulo, and another at the Cento e Quatro, Belo Horizonte; and a third installation at the Mitte gallery in Barcelona. In tackling this triple action, the group resolved to link the three projects together by highlighting the sculptural and invasive nature of the pieces and colours. Three cities, three spaces, three installations: one project.
Festival: Cut Out Festival Space: Museo de la Ciudad Place: QUERÉTARO, México Date: November 2011 EL CLAUsTRO Penique productions travelled to Mexico as a guest of the CutOut Fest animation festival in order to carry out an intervention in the city of Querétaro where the festival is held. The project took place at the Museo de la Ciudad, located in the former Convent of San José de Gracia, and consisted of completely covering the building s cloister. The light transformed the piece depending on the time of day. In strong sunlight, the installation was deep blue inside and the architecture that enveloped it was tinted a shade of sky blue. At night, the warm artificial light used in the gallery around the inflatable piece and the spot light installed in the central fountain outlined the volumes in a darker shade of blue.
Event: Shortfim Space: Cinematographic Set Place: MÉXICO DF, México Date: November 2011 choko ho ol In Mexico, Penique productions was commissioned by media production company MUV to create the scenography for a short horror film called Un, Dos, Tres. The result is a piece called Choko Ho ol, an intervention that recreates a little girl s room as per the script s requirements.
Prize:SHOT (Hands on Transformation) Space:Sala Dogana Place: GENOA, Italy Date: 9th to 25th of September 2011 palazzo ducale Winners of the SHOT (Sala Dogana Hands-On Transformation) contest, organized by the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa (Italy) the group travelled to Genoa in order to transform the Sala Dogana in the Palace, which is devoted to Art by young and emerging artists. The colour chosen for the plastic was gold and warm lighting was used in order to enhance its glow, thus emulating the monumental location, as the site is in the city s historic district. This project was characterized by the complex absorption of the building s own pillars within the inflatable piece, as well as the intent to enhance the arches and the architectural volumetrics.
PALO ALTO Project carried out in collaboration with the Escola de Disseny BAU for the XXII Desfilada de Moda at the Palo Alto artistic and cultural production centre. The scenographic installation purported to merge art and fashion. Event: XXII Catwalk BAU Space: Sala XYZ, Palo Alto Place: BARCELONA, Spain Date: 17th of June 2011
sala buit This work was installed in Sala B at the Absolut Art Space gallery. Sala Buit proposed creating a route through various new spaces created inside the original architectural space. The installation was composed of eight small, interconnected inflatable pieces that all shared the same source of air and were held up only by the pressure they exerted on each other. A light on either end of the piece created a range of orange tones when filtered through the translucent material, with viewers perceptions changing depending on the point they were at in the route through the installation. Space: Sala B, Absolute Art Space Gallery. Place: BARCELONA, Spain Date: 27th of April- 7th of June 2011
Prize: Artist Residence Space: El Sótano de la Tabacalera Place: MADRID, Spain Date: 11th to 16th of January 2011 El Sótano de La Tabacalera The collective was invited to participate in the Artists Residency program promoted by CSA La Tabacalera in Madrid. The room, a basement, had no natural light and no exits except for the main entrance. The purple material covered the entire surface and the space was outlined in fluorescent light. The architectural flaws in the high ceilings created tensions in the plastic, forming arches that were hitherto inexistent in the site s original physiognomy.
Festival: Sense Titol 12 Space: Universitat de Barcelona Place: BARCELONA, Spain Date: 27th of April- 7th of June 2011 forat de l escala Penique productions was chosen to take part in the group show Sense Títol: a traditional annual exhibit of work produced by the graduating class at the Fine Arts Faculty of the Universitat de Barcelona. For this event, Penique productions presented Forat de l Escala, a piece that measured over 16-meters in height. The project delimited an intangible space. It made a forgotten space visible. This niche of useless uninhabitable architecture was delimited by the stairway and took on its spiral shape. The location allowed visitors to experience the work from the inside or from the outside. The direct natural light during the day and the artificial light at night generated a characteristic play of colour, transparencies and intensities.
18 clocktower place Penique productions participated in the Market State Project: an initiative that arose in response to the imminent demolition of the Market State residential complex. During the day, 60 artists working in various disciplines were offered space to participate in a group exhibit. In this unrivalled setting, Penique productions presented the 18 Clocktower Place, a piece that completely invades one of the apartments. Beneath the installation s uniform colour and texture, it was possible to make out the shapes of the spaces and furniture inside the six rooms. Festival: Market State Project Space: Flat 18 Place: LONDON, UK Date: 6th of March 2010
Space: Church Place: PIERA, Spain Date: 30th of July to 2nd of August 2009 la capella The team in charge of the Cerka l Festival in Piera (Barcelona) invited Penique productions to participate. The group carried out an intervention inside the 16th Century Gothic chapel of Sant Sebastià. Penique productions presented the public with a project in which light plays a key role. A 4-meter tall blue neon crucifix was placed in front of natural light streaming in from the outside through pink plastic. Gradually, depending on the time of day, the artificial light imposed a bluish tint on the natural light that made the pink colour of the material stand out, generating various contrasts and shades both in the colours and in the architectural forms.
bathroom The group s third piece and its second intervention at Nottingham Trent University. The site of the intervention was of key importance and lent the finished work its character. The aim was to draw upon the effects of the different locations and elements to be found at each site. The installation took over the space, impeding its usual function, thus turning it into a work of art. The potential for this space lay in its everyday familiarity and in how recognizable it was for the public. Space: Bathroom Place: NOTTINGHAM, UK Date: January 2009
Space: Stairs Place: NOTTINGHAM, UK Date: November 2008 the green sack The second of Penique productions projects. Continuing along the line of investigation begun in Barcelona, the project was developed at Nottingham Trent University. This intervention was carried out in a domestic setting, without a public. The piece covered the stairs and walls of the house. What was peculiar about the balloon after which the piece was named is that it was made entirely of plastic garbage bags: The Green Sack.
Space: Àngel Ferran Place: BARCELONA, Spain Date: September 2007 espai 1 Espai 1 was an installation created at the Universitat de Barcelona. The aim of the project was to investigate the possibilities for creating an inflatable and invasive sculpture that would block the public s access to the exhibit space, thus generating a reaction that would itself complete the piece. As this creative process unfolded, the installation revealed itself to be accessible, offering greater potential from its interior. This is how the project began: Penique productions was born.
