3 Material Architecture Luis Fernández-Galiano Architecture is ideas and forms, but both crystallize through matter. While construction is prefigured in the immaterial geometries of the project, it takes shape in the physical world by means of materials and techniques. This entangled relationship between intentions, demands, constructions, and environments is the subject of this seminar, which tackles the materialization of the architecture project through six case studies: six recent buildings completed by contemporary masters, and explained directly by their authors from the complexity of context and the material aim of their realization. The first of the sessions opens with Enrique Sobejano presenting the Arvo Pärt Center in Estonia, a work that pays tribute to the great composer, and continues with Carme Pinós, who will explain the new building in Barcelona of the mythical Escola Massana, and is wrapped with the lecture of the Pritzker Prize laureate Jacques Herzog describing in detail the different projects to transform the Bankside Power Station in London into the Tate Modern. The second session brings to Valencia one of the members of Harquitectes, Josep Ricart, who will explain the project to convert the building of Cristalleries Planell in Barcelona into a civic center, Ángela García de Paredes, who will show the Public Library built in Ceuta over an archaeological site, and Dominique Perrault, closing the seminar with his latest work, the colossal Exhibition and Conference Center in León.

4 Enrique Sobejano Arvo Pärt Center Laulasmaa, Estonia Enrique Sobejano (1957, Madrid) has worked as an architect since graduating from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University in New York in He founded Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos with Fuensanta Nieto in The studio has offices in Madrid and Berlin, and their major works include the San Telmo Museum, the Zaragoza Congress Center, the Joanneum extension in Graz, and the Contemporary Art Center in Córdoba. They are the recipients of the 2007 National Prize for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2010), the Hannes Meyer Prize (2012), and the Alvar Aalto Medal (2015) de January enero 12:00 16:00 Roland Halbe

5 Carme Pinós Escola Massana Barcelona Miquel Tres Carme Pinós (1954, Barcelona), graduate in architecture and urbanism from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura of Barcelona, set up her studio in 1991 after having earned international prestige with Enric Miralles with projects like Igualada Cemetery. Her office develops a wide range of projects that go from urban renovations and public works to furniture design. She has been distinguished with several prizes, including the Richard J. Neutra Medal for Professional Excellence from California State Polytechnic University and the Berkeley-Rupp Prize, both of Pinós combines her activity with teaching, and she has been guest professor at universities like UC Berkeley, ENSAPVS in Paris, and Harvard s Graduate School of Design de January enero 12:00 17:00 Duccio Malagamba

6 Jacques Herzog Tate Modern Londres Miguel Galiano Jacques Herzog (Basel, 1950) studied architecture at the ETH of Zurich between 1970 and 1975, and founded Herzog & de Meuron with Pierre de Meuron in Basel in With an international team of about 40 associates and 400 collaborators, the firm s main office is in Basel with additional ones in London, New York, Hong Kong, Berlin, and Copenhagen. The studio has designed a wide range of projects from the small scale of a private home to urban design. Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have been awarded numerous prizes including the Pritzker in 2001 and the RIBA Gold Medal in Jacques Herzog has combined his activity as an architect with academic work as visiting professor at Harvard and professor at the ETHZ de January enero 12:00 18:00 Roland Halbe

7 Josep Ricart Cristalleries Planell Barcelona Josep Ricart (Cerdanyola del Vallès, 1973) established the studio Harquitectes in Sabadell in the year 2000 with another three architects: David Lorente (Granollers, 1972), Xavier Ros (Sabadell, 1972), and Roger Tudó (Terrassa, 1973). They all graduated from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura del Vallès between 1998 and 2000, where they are currently professors of architectural design and construction. Their work has been distinguished with several awards, and they have been invited to participate in several exhibitions and to lecture in Europe and America. 8 Ángela Gª de Paredes Public Library Ceuta Ángela García de Paredes (Madrid, 1958) is chair professor at the ETSA of Madrid, where she graduated in 1982 and earned the PhD Doctoral Award in She established Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos with Ignacio García Pedrosa in The studio has completed prominent works like the Valdemaqueda Town Hall, the Villa Romana La Olmeda, and the Lugo Auditorium, and has been distinguished with the Spain Architecture Award 2007 and the Spain Fine Arts Gold Medal García de Paredes has been visiting professor at other universities like the IUAV in Venice, the UIC Barcelona, and the UNAV in Pamplona, and guest critic and lecturer at Harvard s GSD, the ETH of Zurich, and UDK in Berlin de January enero 12:00 Fernando Alda

9 Dominique Perrault Exhibition Center León Miguel Galiano Dominique Perrault (1953, Clermont-Ferrand) studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris and earned international renown with his project for the National Library of France. Recipient of the Praemium Imperiale of Japan in 2015 and honorary professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne in Switzerland, he is also the founder of DPAx and DPA Lab, dedicated to research and innovation in the field of architecture. His main projects to date include the Olympic Velodrome and Swimming Pool in Berlin, the extension of the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg, the Olympic Tennis Stadium in Madrid, the EWHA Woman s University in Seoul, and Fukoku Tower in Osaka de January enero 12:00 13:00 Joaquín Mosquera
