4 photo: Piotr Krajewski Shaklee Terraces Market Street 444 San Francisco California The Shaklee Terraces (or 444 Market Street or One Front Street) is an office skyscraper rising on San Francisco's Market Street in the Financial District The building, completed in 1979, stands 538 feet (164 m) tall and has 38 floors The composition of the façade closely resembles that of the Shell Building by Emil Fahrenkamp, which was built in Berlin in 1931 The Shaklee Corporation used to be headquartered in the office tower until the company moved to Pleasanton, California in 2000 In , Scient Corporation, a dot-com era consulting firm, had its head office on the upper floors of the building, prior to its move to One Market Street Public access unknown! 1979 Skidmore, Owings & Merrill pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 4

5 photo: Piotr Krajewski Vaillancourt Fountain Embarcadero Plaza San Francisco California This fountain is known as the 'Vaillancourt Fountain', but the sculptor, Armand Vaillancourt, named it 'Québec libre!' on the night before the inauguration day of the fountain in 1971 Vaillancourt is a French sculptor, painter and performance artist born on September 3, 1929 in the city of Black Lake, Quebec, Canada He gave the fountain the name 'Québec libre!' (French for 'Free Quebec!'), to show his support for the Quebec sovereignty movement and more largely, the support for the freedom of all people in Quebec The huge, cubic fountain is 200 feet long, 140 feet wide and 36 feet high It was closed for years for repair but was fully restored a few years ago (text from wwwkiwipulsecom) photo: Piotr Krajewski 1971 Artist Armand Vaillancourt pkrajewski_pl 5

12 photo: Piotr Krajewski 1234 Howard Street Howard Street 1234 San Francisco California The 50-by-165-foot site stretches from Howard Street on one side to Natoma Street on the other A one-way drive, with parking on one side and lobby and circulation on the other, links the streets Above the drive, a court is carved through the block, dividing the width of the building into three equal bars The central bar remains empty; those on either side are again divided, into two halves The east bar contains two-bedroom units; the west bar, which also accommodates the elevator and stairs, one-bedroom units Floating service walls create a sense of spaciousness and indeterminacy Bridges cross the central court, giving access from the east bar to the west bar In a loft-saturated housing environment, this complex offers an alternative, providing more privacy to accommodate family living Unlike typical urban housing, these units have abundant light from windows along the length of the court (text from archdaily) Project is not public! 2007 Stanley Saitowitz Natoma s pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 12

15 photo: noehill photo: Finavon Hallidie Building Sutter Street San Francisco California CA "The first application of a pure curtain wall to any building in America came some six years after the completion of Peter Behrens's Turbine Factory in Berlin with its flanking glass walls" While Polk had visited Europe soon after the completion of the Fagus-Werk it is unlikely that he was familiar with these precedents One other reason for the Hallidie Building may have been Polk's decision to break with the heavyweight Richardsonian manner, that Neo-Romanesque style which Polk once described as 'Titanic inebriation in sandstone' After 1893 Polk was in any event under the influence of Burnham's highly successful Beaux-Arts Columbian Exposition staged in Chicago in that year All the same, this in itself in no way accounts for a structure of such extraordinary precision and lightness Such a work was hardly eclectic practice prior to 1915 Like the Monadnock Block in the career of John Root this seven-storey structure was to be the unique triumph of Polk's career photo: waviness Public access unknown! 1918 Willis Jefferson Polk Huib 15

17 photo: Jon Lieber photo: Eke Miedaner Marin County Civic Center North San Pedro Road 101 San Rafael California The Marin County Civic Center, located a few miles north of San Francisco, is one of the last designs that Frank Lloyd Wright worked on It is one of the finest expressions of 'organic architecture', a concept Wright labeled as his own Construction on the main building began in 1960, a year after his death, and the last building was completed in 1976 The design consists of a large rotunda with two large arms (one for Justice, the other for Administration) that flow over the hillsides with arched colonnades Originally, the roof was to be gold in colour, but this was changed to light blue before construction began The gold roof on beige walls were meant to mimic the surrounding landscape A 50-metre triangular spire creates a third dimension to the design, soaring upward through the Marin hills photo: Kevin Collins 1976 Frank Lloyd Wright rtaube One-hour docent-led tours of the Civic Center are offered every Wednesday at 10:30, leaving from the second floor Gift Shop, room 233 Drive north on Highway 101 Take the North San Pedro Road exit traveling east Turn left onto Civic Center Drive 17

19 photo: Ken McCown photo: Ryan Taube M H de Young Museum Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive 50 San Francisco California The M H de Young Museum sites atop the site of the old museum which was severely damaged in San Francisco earthquake of 1989 The building depicts this fracture not only in it's form, but also in the structure of the building itself, which can move almost a meter during an earthquake The copper skin, which covers the building entirely, is covered in dimples and perforations which change in colour throughout the day depending on the quality of sunlight Herzog and De Meuron rtaube photo: Ryan Taube Tuesday through Sunday, 9:30 am to 5:15 pm, Fridays until 8:45 pm The tower closes at 4:30 pm Tuesday through Sunday and 8 pm Fridays 19

20 photo: Manuel Majerus photo: Manuel Majerus VC Morris Gift Shop Maiden Lane 140 San Francisco California Originally designed as the VC Morris Gift Shop, Frank Lloyd Wright's only San Francisco building now houses the Xanadu Gallery Officially the building was designed in 1948, and incorporates the now legendary spiral ramp theme which Wright had already designed for the Guggenheim Museum, though that project wasn't finished until 1959, shortly after his death The controversy around the Guggenheim stemmed partly from the spiral ramp, though in the smaller, more intimate scale of the VC Morris Gift Store it seems to have won over the public at once The street entrance is an updated Romanesque arch, which according to Wright beckons the passerby in rather than vulgarly displaying its merchandise on the sidewalk The arch gives way to a glass tunnel atrium, then on to the spiraling interior The entire space seems to rotate beneath the luminous bubbles of the cast white plastic ceiling (text from project's website) 1950 Frank Lloyd Wright haveacupoftea photo: Manuel Majerus Tuesday - Saturday: In a small street on the Eastern side of Union Square, central San Francisco 20

23 photo: Ryan Taube photo: Jenn Ludwig California Academy of Sciences Music Concourse Drive 55 San Francisco California The new California Academy of Sciences has risen on the same site of the former Academy in Golden Gate Park The design required the demolition of most of the 11 existing buildings, built between 1916 and 1991 Its primary goal is to provide a modern facility for exhibition, education, conservation and research under one roof according to sustainable design strategies Natural ventilation instead of air conditioning for large parts of the building, carefully chosen building materials, an efficient use and re-use of water, as well as the generation of energy, are integral parts of the design Three historic parts of the former Academy (the African and North American Halls, and the entrance to the Steinhart Aquarium) were maintained in different ways as a memory of the past (text from website architect) photo: Jenn Ludwig Renzo Piano fjennludwig Monday - Saturday: / Sunday: 11:

24 photo: David Weibel photo: David Weibel Embarcadero Center Embarcadero Center 3 San Francisco California The award-winning Embarcadero Center is an outstanding example of a planned development built with the special controls of redevelopment It has contributed to the revitalization of the downtown area by creating gracious public spaces, extensive works of art and a vital environment for people and civic activities Built in phases, the eight-block, 43 million sf (399,483 sm) site is comprised of five office towers, two hotels with 800 and 360 rooms respectively, and a multi-level pedestrian retail spine that spans the center of the site Landscaped plazas and bridges link the retail space to the office towers, hotels, and the magnificent Justin Herman Plaza Embarcadero Center was designed to support pedestrian activity and promote community gatherings, while maintaining private facilities for the needs of the business community and hotel guests Floor area/size m² John Portman & Associates David_Weibel photo: David Weibel 24

26 Electric Ramps at the Old Centre Cantón de la Soledad Vitoria-Gasteiz Spain This project came about from an idea competition organized by the City of Vitoria-Gasteiz The programme contemplates the creation of covered mechanical ramps, four sections in Cantón de la Soledad and three sections in Cantón de San Francisco Javier The decision to cover the ramps allows a better guaranteed use, given the extreme winter conditions in the city The covering will be both complex and simple It is complex in its apparent three-dimensional perception and simple as it is conceived from equal pieces, uniquely displaced among themselves The basic stainless steel and glass portico acts similarly to the shots of a film, by means of rotary movements around a virtual axis in sequences of one metre distances The sensation of rotational movement that the user perceives uses the movement of the ramp itself to create a connected sequence that holds one's interest all the way up, creating different views in different places along the way photo: Roberto Ercilla 2007 Client Roberto Ercilla Municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz Roberto_Ercilla 26

27 photo: Ken McCown Sundial Bridge Sundial Bridge Drive 840 Redding California The Sundial Bridge is a cantilever spar cable-stayed bridge that spans the Sacramento River in Redding, California, about a 3 hour drive north of San Francisco It is similar in design to Santiago Calatrava's Puente del Alamillo in Seville, Spain However, the mast of this bridge is located off center, creating a uniquely unbalanced look At 217 feet (66 metres), the mast of the bridge also serves as the world's largest sundial The shadow moves at about a foot per minute, so one can actually see the rotation of the earth The deck of the bridge is composed of translucent glass that is illuminated at night, casting an aquamarine blue light on the river below photo: Ken McCown Client Santiago Calatrava Turtle Bay Exploration Park rtaube Open daily from 0600 to midnight From Interstate 5, take the Lassen Peak Highway exit and go west to Sundial Bridge (Auditorium) Drive Turn right to the Turtle Bay Exploration Park 27
