6 A Retirement Celebration Professor J. N. Hillgarth From time to time The Journal o f Medieval Latin intends to take note of the retirement of distinguished colleagues who have contributed to the field of Medieval Latin Studies. These celebrations are not intended as formal Festschriften, replete as they are with lists of publications, nor are articles solicited specially from the colleagues and students of the honorand. Rather they are meant simply to express a note of thanks for exceptional service in scholarship and teaching and to appear in regularly scheduled volumes of JMLat. It is a pleasure for the editors that Jocelyn Nigel Hillgarth is the first person to be honoured in this way. Although always regarded as an historian, and quite properly so, Professor Hillgarth is a scholar who throughout his career has pursued the study of history through the close study of texts. His interests have centered on critical editions embracing literary texts (Opera S. Iuliani Toletani, vol. 1, CCSL 15) as well as historical documents, the fortunae of writers (Julian of Toledo, Isidore of Seville, Orosius), and the contents of libraries, especially the lesser known libraries of Spain. His three articles dealing with the influence of Visigothic Spain on early Christian Ireland (Studia Patristica 4, Proceedings o f the Royal Irish Academy C , and Peritia 3) are models of careful intellectual history based on textual study. The many young historians trained by Professor Hillgarth at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (where he was Senior Fellow) and the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto, have enjoyed the benefit of an outstanding model. We are confident that scholars in North America, Europe, and around the world will join with us in our congratulations and in wishing Jocelyn Hillgarth a long and productive retirement. The Editors
