5 We are modern only through casual ignorance of the past. As soon as we awaken to the past, it is absolutely modern Roland Barthes, Carnets To really understand our time, the few decades making the transition between the seventeenth and eighteenth century - that is to say the apogee of the reign of Louis XIV and the beginning of the Century of Lights - represent a decisive moment. They are highly indicative of the new currents, which in religion, philosophy, the sciences, the arts and fashion, gradually formed what was to become a specifically European sensitivity and culture. The Paris Forum is dedicated to the impact, from that moment, of foreign commissions on French creation. The study of the projects, of the invention of forms and materials, the requests and the choices, the family ties that linked the courts, the very recently rediscovered commercial circuits, the taste of the sovereigns, the artists, intermediaries and connoisseurs whose advice was decisive, the opinion and the selection created and implemented by travellers and amateurs, will be the occasion here to build a new panorama. The ancient techniques and the conservation of cultural heritage will be discussed and better understood. The participants will follow the steps and benchmarks which, through an unbroken chain of masterpieces, lead the premises of the eighteenth century to the extreme refinement of the dream of a European Empire. Le droit au bonheur that is to say the pursuit of pleasure and happiness through Art and elegance, is especially embodied in the eighteenth century by the so-called Decorative Arts. Since they participate more intimately in life than any other domain of art, they provide a lesson, an example, one is tempted to say a hope, upon which modern man should meditate.
