1 MCI (P) 021/12/2013 Newsletter of IStructE Singapore Regional Group Vol. 10, No. 3, Nov 2014 IStructE MEMBERS NIGHT & SINGAPORE STRUCTURAL AWARDS 2014 HELD ON 10 OCTOBER 2014 AT ORCHARD PARADE HOTEL About 140 structural engineers attended the 26 th Members Night and Singapore Structural Awards Engineer Chong Kee Sen (President of Institution of Engineers, Singapore), Mr David Ng (Chairman, Malaysia Regional Group) were among the distinguished guests who graced the event. Emcee Reve Chin invited Prof CM Wang to give the welcome address before dinner. He informed members that the Singapore Regional Group has been gaining strength in terms of membership numbers. As at today, it has 467 members (including about 150 new student members). Also, he is pleased to announce that 12 new members were added into the member s (a) role as a result of a good passing rate (of 40%) in the 2014 Chartered Membership Examination. (a) (b) (c) (d) Members Night dinner at the Tung Luk Signature Restaurant, Orchard Parade Hotel Another important recent development is that HQ and PEB have given the approval to allow Singapore structural engineers with P.Eng. to sit for the IStructE Supplementary Exam (similar to the PQRC in Shanghai since 2011) for eligibility to (a) be admitted as IStructE members and chartered structural engineers. The first PEB Supplementary Exam will be held some time next year Members were told that they can look forward to three wonderful short courses for next year. These courses are: Seismic Design to EC8 and Sustainable Concrete Solutions (both courses to be conducted by Prof Costas Georgopoulos from Kingston University London), and The Finite Element Method (to be conducted by the world renowned Prof JN Reddy from Texas A&M University). Also, Prof Wang released the exciting news that IStructE HQ has selected Singapore to be the venue for its first Prof Wang with IStructE Members who successfully passed Chartered Membership Exam

4 Vol. 10 No. 3 Nov 2014 Page 4 IStructE Singapore Chairman Prof Wang receives Keith Eaton Award The Keith Eaton Award 2014 was awarded to Prof Wang Chien Ming for his much valued support to the Institution, particularly in his role as Chairman of the Singapore Regional Group, his involvement in Institution Asia Pacific activities and his leadership of outreach into Vietnam. The Award was presented by IStructE President Nick Russell at the Institution Council Away Days in London on July Previous winners of the award were Zoe Zhou (2009), Anthony Charles Farrell (2010), Robert John Young (2011) and Hirak Kumar Sen (2012). This award is named after Keith Eaton who was the Chief Executive of the Institution of Structural Engineers from 1999 to December The Institution of Structural Engineers is the world s largest professional body dedicated to structural engineering, having led the profession worldwide for over 100 years. Committed to maintaining high standards, the Institution promotes safety, efficiency, sustainability and excellence in the work of its members who are qualified by assessment of their professional competence in structural engineering design. As a result, the Institution s members in over 100 countries are recognised worldwide for their technical and professional expertise. Recipients of the Keith Eaton Award are judged on dedicated, valuable, outstanding or exceptional personal contributions towards the advancement of the Institution s international interests. It was awarded for the first time in 2009 as a way of recognising the increasingly positive Institution-related activity across the world. Winners of IStructE Singapore Gold Medal and Book Prizes Fong Kah Jun NTU As a science stream high school student in Malaysia, I had decided long ago to pursue the field of engineering study in my future. Engineering program offered by NTU is my first choice and I was glad that I have been selected into the civil engineering program. Since then, I have developed a strong interest towards the civil engineering courses in NTU. My passion to study steel design and structural analysis was ignited during my undergraduate days. I also had the chance to study the ways of improving the efficiency of piezoelectric material for my final year project To me, it has been a fulfilling journey so far in NTU and in Singapore. As a fresh graduate, I'm currently working as a civil and structural engineer for a notable engineering consultancy firm. I'm very excited and elated to meet any jobs and social challenges in my near future! Last but not least, I would like to thanks IES/IStructE Joint Committee for presenting this award to me. Choosing the study path of civil engineering is never a regret to me!" Liu Ziyue NUS My journey towards Civil Engineering began with my early fascination with architecture, where imagination and pragmatism are often combined in ingenious styles. Realizing that good structural design and foundation lie behind and beneath every elegant exterior, I decided to pursue a career as a civil engineer. I am grateful for the chance to undertake my undergraduate study at NUS. Through guidance from my professors and mentors, I have learned so much about the various aspects of civil engineering. More importantly, I have learned how to be a creative and meticulous engineer. Without all these, I would not have been able to achieve much in my final year project on land optimization through air-rights development. The knowledge that I gained from this project has certainly opened my eyes to the crucial but often unacknowledged role that civil engineers play in creating a more vibrant and livable Singapore. I am currently working as a project engineer at the Land Transport Authority. I believe that through this first job I will be able to gain valuable experience which will help me progress further in my future career. Finally, I would like to thank the IES/IStructE Joint Committee for presenting me with this award. I am very heartened and honored to receive this recognition.

5 Vol. 10 No. 3 Nov 2014 Page 5 IStructE Medal Winners continue from Page 4 Lim Jiunn Hao Singapore Polytechnic Lim Jiunn Hao is the recipient of the 2013/2014 Institution of Structural Engineers Book Prize. In May 2014, he graduated from the Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Civil Engineering with Business (with Merit).Together with his team, he won the first prize in Inter-class Structural Competition. Winning the competition, which required the team to build a strongest bridge structure using recycled materials, has seen Jiunn Hao s interest in structures grown by leaps and bounds. Jiunn Hao believes in contributing to society. He has been playing his part by actively volunteering his services to Overseas Community Improvement Projects such as Jetty Building Project in Indonesia. "There are no failures, only lessons" is a golden rule that Jiunn Hao abides by and he always looks on the bright side when he gets discouraged in life. Jiunn Hao will be pursuing his degree in Civil Engineering at the Nanyang Technological University this coming August. Winners of Structural Competition Prize sponsored by IStructE: Du Ziran, Lu JunYao, Tan Yen Heng Colin, Tan Kay Hao Andrew, IStructE Winners Team Bridge Model Of Winners Team An Approach to Understand Structural Concepts - Structural Competition The Structural Competition is organised annually by Structural Analysis module team from the School of Architecture and the Built Environment, Singapore Polytechnic. Prizes for this competition are sponsored by IStructE Singapore. Students from Diploma in Civil Engineering with Business (DCEB) have been taking part in this Structural Competition for the past years as part of their learning activities. The aim of the competition is to enhance students understanding of concepts of forces, deformation and structural integrity of trusses. Students use bamboo skewers (about 2mm diameter) to construct truss models. However, there is no restriction in the use of materials or adhesives for the constructions of connections. Load is applied on top of the truss model at the middle of the span, with increasing magnitudes. Students are encouraged to apply structural theories into the design of these truss models. Load Testing by Structural Simulator The Structural Simulator is used to test the models. At the load testing, a vertical load will be gradually applied at the centre point on the top of the model. The load versus mid-span deflection is displayed realtime. Load is applied gradually until the failure of the model. Failure is considered being reached by either of the two conditions: (a) With increasing of deformations, the current load level drops below 85% of the previous highest load level; (b) The deflection at the middle of the span exceeds 15 mm. The team that produces the model with highest load to self-weight ratio is awarded the IStructE Prize.

6 Vol. 10 No. 3 Nov 2014 Page 6 Day 1 (19 March 2015): Course on Seismic Design with EC8 Eurocode 8 (EC8) is the new state-of-the-art third generation code for seismic design. It includes well established concepts such as energy dissipation and new concepts such as displacement-based method. EC8 provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date set of design rules currently available and is now the single seismic design code in Europe. It represents a significant step forward harmonising design and analysis of earthquake-resistant structures throughout Europe and potentially around the world. Conducted by Professor Costas Georgopoulos (from Kingston University London), this one day course delivers key advice and guidance on seismic design and analysis of structures to EC8. A clear and effective introduction to earthquake damages, causes and lessons learned is followed by the underlying principles of seismic behaviour, conceptual design and analysis. The principles are linked to the code through worked examples, tutorials and structured discussion. Emphasis is placed on reinforced concrete building structures although the concepts are widely applicable. Day 2 (20 March 2015): Course on Sustainable Concrete Solutions On Day 2, Prof Costas Georgopoulos will give the first two lectures on Sustainable Concrete Solutions that are driven by Professional Practice, supported by Research and calibrated by the successful delivery of undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes at universities in the UK. A/Prof Gary Ong (from NUS) will follow up with a lecture on Sustainable Construction for Singapore s Urban Infrastructure while Mr Low Giau Leong (BCA) will talk on Singapore s Solution to Concrete Sustainability. 8 Vol. 10 No. 3 Nov 2014 Page 8 SITE VISIT TO SINGAPORE SPORTS HUB On 4 December 2014, more than 40 IStructE members and students visited the Singapore Sports Hub. Mike King (from ARUP) briefed the IStructE delegation on 55,000-seat National Stadium which is the centre piece of the Singapore Sports Hub project. Delegation of IES/ IStructE Joint Committee, Engineers & Students visiting the iconic Singapore Sports Hub Mike pointed out the following features of the stadium structure: (a) dome roof spans 310m with a rise of 85m from the ground level; and the fixed roof dome structure is the largest unsupported dome in the world; (b) dome roof supports a symmetrical movable roof in 2 halves which can close or open within 20 minutes. The movable roof is made less stiffer than the fixed dome roof so that it can slide without getting jam; (c) fixed roof dome structure is formed by a series of arch shaped steel trusses varying in depth from 5m at the centre to 2.5m; (d) truss arches are constructed from CHS elements and span in multiple directions and cross the roof opening to form a highly efficient braced dome structure and ensure clean and elegant lines within the structure; (e) trusses are supported by a post-tensioned concrete ring beam support at the base; (f) the 30,000 seat lower tier can be reconfigured and moved in order to convert from football to athletic and cricket modes; (g) the stadium is cooled by air flowing out from below the spectators seats and (h) spectators seats are colored red and white in such a way that the stadium appears to be full even if it is empty. The visit to the Singapore Sports Hub has been an eye-opener for IStructE delegation. It is no wonder the Singapore Sports Hub has been awarded the IStructE Singapore Structural Award for Structures Photos of the National Stadium at various views taken by Er Mah Guan Pang
