3 Suggested Itinerary Monday, October 1, 2018 Departures for Vienna Take independent overnight international flights to Vienna, Austria. Tuesday, October 2, 2018 Arrivals in Vienna Hotel Am Stephansplatz, Vienna (D) Upon arrival at the Vienna International Airport (VIE) take independent transfers to the four-star Hotel Am Stephansplatz. In the late afternoon, take a guided tour of St. Stephen s Cathedral - Stephansdom, one of Vienna s most famous sights. Then embark on a motorcoach tour of Vienna s worldrenowned Ringstraße (Ring Road), a circular road that surrounds the city s Innere Stadt district. View glorious monuments and outstanding architectural examples of the Ringstraßenstil historical style of the 1860s to 1890s, such as the State Opera, the Parliament, City Hall and the Museum of Applied Art. Gather in the evening at the hotel s restaurant for a buffet dinner featuring light entrees and Austrian wines. Wednesday, October 3, 2018 Baroque Architecture Drive to the Belvedere Palace, a splendid garden-palace commissioned by Austria s great general, Prince Eugene of Savoy, as his summer residence. Belvedere Palace is considered one of the most magnificent ensembles of baroque secular architecture in Europe. Before opening hours, enjoy a private early morning viewing of the Upper Belvedere, renowned for its collection of circa 1900 Viennese paintings including works by Klimt and Schiele. Gather for an elegant lunch at a modern Vienna restaurant. Later this afternoon, drive outside the city center to the Schonbrunn Palace. Spend the remainder of the day exploring the Hapsburg s former baroque summer palace, which was designed by architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. Thursday, October 4, 2018 Vienna Secession & Otto Wagner Spend the day on a guided tour led by an architectural historian exploring architectural gems dating from the turn of the 20th century a unique period of transition when rebel artists established the Vienna Secession, an artistic movement at odds with Austria s imperial past that laid the groundwork for Modernism, Art Deco, Art Nouveau and other dramatic innovations. Start with a drive to the periphery of the city to see elaborately decorated apartments designed by world-renowned architect Otto Wagner in the Linke Wienzeile (Left Vienna Row). Enjoy a private viewing of the first villa Wagner built for himself as a summer residence, which was the private home and gallery of a leading Viennese artist, Ernst Fuchs. Tour the beautiful fin de siècle interiors and view the artist s own works. Next, drive to the nearby Kirche Am Steinhof (Church of St. Leopold) for an interior visit of one of the INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR DESIGN, INC. 3

4 most important Art Nouveau churches in the world designed by Wagner. Return to the Innere Stadt (first district) to have lunch at a traditional Viennese café. This afternoon tour various pavilions, including the Karlsplatz pavilion, designed by Otto Wagner that are recognized as part of the Stadtbahn project, a rail service built in Finish the day at the Secession Building, one of Vienna s foremost examples of Art Nouveau completed by prominent architect Joseph Maria Olbrich in 1898 and designed as an exhibition hall for avant-garde artists. See Klimpt s Beethoven Frieze, one of the most widely recognized artworks of Secession style. Friday, October 5, 2018 Secessionism to Early Modern: Adolf Loos Continue exploring the new aesthetic movement that paved the way for Modernism, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Begin with an interior visit of the Imperial Post Office Savings Bank (pending confirmation), built between 1904 and 1912 by Otto Wagner and considered to be one of the most transformative projects of his era. Admire the building s harmonious combination of form and function and gain special access to the executive suite with original interiors. Afterwards, we shift our focus to the functional and modern buildings designed by the pioneering modernist architect Adolf Loos starting with his most famous and controversial building bearing his name located on Michaelerplatz. See this building s former shop area then continue on a unique visit to a former tailor s studio entirely designed by Adolf Loos. After a leisurely lunch, drive to the outskirts of Vienna in the Hietzing district for a visit to Gustav Klimt s studio where he created some of his most important works from 1911 to his death in Before our return to the city center, pass by the striking Haus Scheu Villa designed by Adolf Loos and the celebrated Villa Skywa-Primavesi designed by Josef Hoffman. This evening is independent. *An option to attend a musical or opera performance this evening will be offered at an additional cost. Saturday, October 6, 2018 Visionary & Contemporary Landmarks Our architectural discovery of Vienna reaches a turning point as we spend our last day discovering some of the city s most forward-looking urban districts. Start with a visit to Museumsquartier (MQ), one of the largest art and culture complexes in the world constructed in the former imperial court stables. See how historic buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries and contemporary museums form a unique architectural ensemble and create a special ambience. Enjoy lunch together at one of the many cafés at MuseumsQuartier Wien. This afternoon, continue to the progressive university district where we will see works by international star architects including Zaha Hadid s Library and Learning Center and Carme Pinos s Department and Administration Building. Then head across the river to the modern urban site named Donau City on the Danube, which was intended to become the second city center, but rather became a field for experimenting INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR DESIGN, INC. 4

5 new approaches in urbanistics, typology and construction. See the landmark DC Towers designed by French architect Dominique Perrault and a church by Austrian architect Heinz Tesar. Our grand tour ends in Vienna s Floridsdorf district to have a glass of the typical Austrian Grüner Veltliner or Gemischter Satz at an award-winning winemaker s estate featuring innovative architecture. Return to the hotel for an independent evening. Sunday, October 7, 2018 Tradition & Innovation in the Urban Landscapes Hotel Am Stephansplatz, Vienna (B, S, D) Continue exploring the city s architectural wonders with a guided visit of the Gasometers by the chairman of the Gasometer Community. In the late 1990s, four designs by prominent architects, including Jean Nouvel, were chosen to convert the four 112-year old monuments into a business and residential complex. Parts of the older brick buildings remain and are now classified as historical monuments. In the late morning, stop by the Hofburg Imperial Palace for a visit of the imperial apartments. Planned as a lavish Imperial forum, the grounds were built up majestically by the Habsburg emperors, from the 13th century to the early 20th century. To conclude your morning tour, stop to savor a slice of chocolate torte, a traditional Viennese specialty, in one of the city s historic venues. Enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at leisure to tour the city or the beautiful collections of the Imperial Palace. In the evening, gather for a celebratory farewell dinner in one of Vienna s popular restaurants. Monday, October 8, 2018 Return to the United States (B) After breakfast, check out of the hotel and transfer independently to the airport for return flights to the United States.
