Its location between north and south, east and west, has always made it open to new ideas, even as the city carefully groomed its signature refinement and grace. Our oneof-a-kind itinerary explores great Viennese architecture from the ancient Stephansdom to creative Secession masterpieces to brand new marvels by Zaha Hadid and Jean Nouvel. While staying in our fine four-star hotel immediately across from the cathedral, we will take in a great array of memorable visits and experiences seeing the Klimt masterworks of the Belvedere before the museum opens to the public, gaining special access to buildings by Otto Wagner, entering the former studio of the great Alfred Loos, and enjoying private wine and chocolate tastings in elegant Viennese style. Vienna Highlights See beautiful fin de siècle interiors during a private tour of the first villa that architect Otto Wagner designed for his family. Upper Belvedere Wagner Villa / Alastair Rae Vienna Study Leader ELIHU RUBIN is Associate Professor of Architecture, Urbanism, and American Studies at Yale. He received a doctorate in architecture and a master s in city planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor of arts from Yale. His first book, Insuring the City: The Prudential Center and the Postwar Urban Landscape (Yale Univ. Press, 2012) was awarded the Kenneth T. Jackson Prize and the Lewis Mumford Award.

3 VIENNA Hofburg Palace, Vienna / Neiljs MONDAY, OCTOBER 1 Departures Take independent overnight flights to Vienna, Austria. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2 Grand Vienna Upon arrival at the Vienna International Airport (VIE), transfer independently to the four-star Hotel Am Stephansplatz. In the late afternoon, take a guided tour of St. Stephen s Cathedral before embarking on a coach tour of Vienna s Ringstrasse (Ring Road). View glorious monuments and outstanding architectural examples of the Ringstrassenstil style of the 1860s to 1890s including the State Opera, the Parliament, City Hall, and the Museum of Applied Art. Gather this evening at the hotel s restaurant for a welcome dinner featuring Austrian wines. (D) WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3 Baroque Architecture Explore Belvedere Palace, a magnificent ensemble of Baroque secular architecture, beginning with a private early-morning viewing of the Upper Belvedere, renowned for its collection of Viennese paintings including works by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. Following an elegant lunch at a modern Vienna restaurant, drive outside the city center to the Schönbrunn Palace, designed by Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, and spend the remainder of the day exploring this World Heritage Site. (B, L) THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4 Otto Wagner & Vienna Secession Spend the day on a guided tour led by an architectural historian, exploring sites dating from the turn of the 20th century when rebel artists established the Vienna Secession, an artistic movement that laid the groundwork for Modernism, Art Deco, and Art Nouveau. Start with a private viewing of the beautiful fin de siècle interiors of the first villa that architect Otto Wagner built for himself and his family, then visit Wagner s Art Nouveau church Kirche Am Steinhof. Following lunch at a traditional Schönbrunn (Summer Palace, view from the fountain) / Dennis Jarvis

4 Viennese café, tour Wagner s Karlsplatz Pavilions and the Art Nouveau Secession Building, which houses Klimt s Beethoven Frieze. (B, L) FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5 Secessionism to Early Modern Begin at the Imperial Post Office Savings Bank, considered one of the most transformative projects of Wagner s career. Pending confirmation, enjoy special access to the executive suite with original interiors. Shift focus to the functional and modern buildings designed by the pioneering modernist architect Adolf Loos starting at his most famous and controversial building, located on Michaelerplatz, and enjoy a unique visit to a former tailor s studio designed by Loos. After a leisurely lunch, drive to the outskirts of Vienna for a visit to Klimt s studio where he created some of his most important works from 1911 to his death in Before returning to the city center, pass by the striking Haus Scheu Villa by Loos and the celebrated Villa Skywa- Primavesi by Josef Hoffman. (B, L) SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6 Visionary Landmarks Discover some of Vienna s most forward-looking urban districts. Start with the MuseumsQuartier Wien, renovated imperial court stables that now house one of the largest cultural complexes in the world. Following lunch at a MuseumsQuartier café, continue to the university district to see innovative works by international star architects Zaha Hadid and Carme Pinos. Head across the Danube to Donau City to see the landmark DC Towers designed by French architect Dominique Perrault and a church by Austrian architect Heinz Tesar. Stop at an award-winning winemaker s estate in Vienna s Floridsdorf district to enjoy a glass of Austrian Grüner Veltliner or Gemischter Satz. (B, L) SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7 Tradition & Innovation Discover the Gasometers on a guided visit of the four massive century-old gas storage tanks that were converted by prominent architects into a business and residential complex in the late 1990s. At the Hofburg Imperial Palace, see the royal apartments and the majestic grounds built up by Habsburg emperors from the 13th century to the early 20th century. End the morning with a decadent stop for a slice of traditional Viennese chocolate torte. After an independent afternoon, gather this evening for a celebratory farewell dinner in one of Vienna s fine restaurants. (B, D) MONDAY, OCTOBER 8 Return to the U.S. After breakfast and check-out, transfer independently to the airport for return flights to the United States. Activity Level: Moderate, good overall mobility required for all walking tours. Deposit & Final Payment A deposit of $1,000 per paying participant is required to guarantee participation in the program. This deposit may be paid by check or by Visa or MasterCard. Final payment will be invoiced and is due on June 22, 2018, by check only to International Seminar Design, Inc. Registrants will be accepted beyond this date on a space-available basis. Flights: Airfare is not included in the tour price. Participants are responsible for all aspects of their round-trip air arrangements. Terms & Conditions: International Seminar Design, Inc. (ISDI) acts only as an agent for the participant with respect to transportation, accommodations, and all other services relating to these tours. Cancellations & Refunds: All cancellations must be received in writing by ISDI, and are subject to a non-refundable administrative fee of $500 per person. Written cancellation received by ISDI on or before June 22, 2018: full refund minus $500 per person administrative fee. Written cancellation received by ISDI on or between June 23 and August 17, 2018: full refund of any recoverable land costs, less $2,200 per person cancellation charge (includes administrative fee). Written cancellation received by ISDI on or after August 18, 2018: no refund. After the tour has commenced, it is not possible to issue any refunds. No refunds for any unused portion of a tour including, but not limited to, occasional missed meals or any missed sightseeing tours. In the case of cancellation, substitutions are not accepted. Tour cost is non-transferable. If ISDI or the NTHP cancels a tour, active registrants will receive a full refund of all tour payments. A package of cancellation, baggage, and medical insurance is strongly recommended. Travel Insurance: The National Trust for Historic Preservation strongly recommends the purchase of trip cancellation insurance, which is available for coverage of expenses in conjunction with cancellation due to illness or accident. Baggage insurance is also recommended. In the event that you must cancel your participation in a travel program, trip cancellation insurance may be the only source of reimbursement.
