photo: Ken McCown McCormick Tribune Campus Center South State Street 3201 Chicago California Occupying a spot directly beneath an elevated train track, The McCormick Campus Center is the first building designed by Rem Koolhaas in the In order to muffle the noisy trains above, Koolhaas actually designed two distinct buildings that are structurally separated from each other The train is surrounded by an "acoustically isolating stainless steel tube" The Campus Center beneath is entered through a 20 foot high glass portrait of Mies van der Rohe, who established himself at IIT after the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933 It houses a number of services that were previously spread out across the campus, including a bookstore, auditorium, coffee bar, post office, and convenience store The formal layout for the building was inspired by tracking the movements of the students as they crossed under the train tracks, making their way between the residence halls and the classrooms The interior corridors follow these original paths with the services filling in between Floor area/size m² Client OMA - Rem Koolhaas Illinois Institue of Technology 2

photo: Jeff Li photo: David Arpi Robie House S Woodlawn Avenue 5757 Chicago Illinois Finished in 1910, the Robie House is the last and one of the best examples of Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Style of architecture, a style whose influence derives from the landscape and plant life of the Midwest prairies of the The building has a low-proportioned, horizontal profile which gives it the appearance of spreading out on flat prairie land Steel-framed cantilevered roof overhangs, continuous bands of art-glass windows and doors, and the use of natural materials are typical Prairie Style features which emphasize the horizonal line of the building In the late 1990's the house was turned into a museum, and it is now open to the public photo: Jeff Li 1910 Client Frank Lloyd Wright Frederick C Robie The house is available by tour only Tour times vary, but on the weekends they are about every half an hour, from From downtown Chicago take S Lake Shore Drive to the E 53rd Street exit Proceed on E 53rd Street to S Woodlawn Avenue and turn left The Robie House is located at the corner of S Woodlawn Avenue and E 58th Street 3

photo: Nathan Umstead SR Crown Hall South State Street 3360 Chicago Illinois SR Crown Hall embodies Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's concept of universal space Rather than designing narrowly for a specific purpose, Mies sought to create a structure that could be adapted to different uses as needs changed over time He realized this goal by moving all structural supports to the building's exterior wall, thus creating a large clearspan structure with 120 x 220 x 18 feet of unencumbered interior space Mies knew he had achieved something extraordinary with Crown Hall, and he called it "the clearest structure we have done, the best to express our philosophy" Crown Hall was and continues to be a standard for architects everywhere It is named after Sol R Crown, Colonel Henry Crown's brother, who co-founded Material Service Corporation Colonel Henry Crown was a member of IIT's Board of Trustees (text from website Illinois Institute of Technology) photo: Nathan Umstead Public access unknown! 1956 Client Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Illinois Institute of Technology numstead 4

photo: Parker Anderson Jay Pritzker Pavilion N Michigan Ave 55 Chicago Illinois ker_pavilionhtml The Jay Pritzker Pavilion, designed by Frank Gehry, is the new home for Chicago's Grant Park Symphony, which has been providing free summer concerts in downtown Chicago for nearly seventy years It seats up to 11,000 people (4,000 fixed seats + 7,000 grass seats) A giant trellis extends over the entire seating area, providing support for a state of the art sound system meant to replicate an indoor concert hall sound experience In order to enhance the experience even more, Gehry enlarged the size of the proscenium to draw people in He also designed large glass doors which close off the stage during the cold winters, allowing performances to take place year round The project was funded by the Pritzker family, who also founded the Pritzker prize, architecture's most prestigious honor photo: Parker Anderson Gehry Partners park is open to the public 24 hours CTA train stations close to Millennium Park include the Red Line Washington Street exit and the Brown/Green/Orange and Purple Line Madison/Wabash Street exit From any of these train stops, head east til you reach the park 5

Cloud Gate N Michigan Ave 55 Chicago Illinois tehtml Cloud Gate (affectionately known as The Bean by local residents) is British artist Anish Kapoor's first public outdoor work installed in the It's design was inspired by liquid mercury, and it weighs in at nearly 100,000 kilograms The structure is composed of steel plates that have been seamlessly pieced together and highly polished, twisting the city and skyline around it's warped mirror Beneath the project, pedestrians are invited to wander through the 'gate' It is here that one sees the 'omphalos', a concave chamber that warps and multiplies the viewers reflections It is situated in Millenium Park, which is also home to Gehry's Pritzker Pavilion photo: Jenn Ludwig Artist Anish Kapoor the park is open 24 hours to the public CTA train stations close to Millennium Park include the Red Line Washington Street exit and the Brown/Green/Orange and Purple Line Madison/Wabash Street exit From any of these train stops, head east til you reach the park 6

photo: Chris Carr photo: Chris Carr Marina City N State St 300 Chicago Illinois Built in a time when suburbs where spread rampantly across the, Marina City sought to reverse the trend and create a building complex that would operate as a city within a city It was the first urban post-war high-rise residential complex in the and is widely credited with beginning the residential renaissance of American inner cities Its model of mixed residential and office uses and high-rise towers with a base of parking has become a primary model for urban development in the, and has been widely copied throughout downtown Chicago The two towers have identical floor plans and share a common marina along the Chicago River Their unique shape has given rise to the local nickname, the 'corn cobs' The bottom 19 floors of each tower are used for parking, the 20th floor is an open deck view of the Loop and the 21st through 60th floor contain apartments The top floor (61st) contains a 360-degree open-air roof deck Project is not public! 1967 Bertrand Goldberg From downtown Chicago, walk north along State St until you cross the river; it will be on your left 8

Art Institute of Chicago Modern Wing South Michigan Avenue 111 Chicago Illinois Playing off his former successful museum designs across the world, Piano's newest design is both responsive and elegant It's location, just south of Gehry's Pritzker Pavilion, is turning this former railroad yard into Chicago's central gathering space Similar to some of his previous manipulations of light, Piano covered the new wing with a "flying carpet" of aluminum blades, that seemingly float above the limestone below Calibrated for Chicago's latitude, they allow northern light to come through the vast skylights forming the wing's third-floor ceiling Combined with a floor to ceiling glass wall along the north façade, the new addition stands in austere contrast to the traditional windowless building next door Floor area/size m² Landscape designer Structural engineer Client Renzo Piano Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ove Arup Art Institute of Chicago Monday 10:30-5:00 Tuesday 10:30-5:00 Wednesday 10:30-5:00 Thursday 10:30-8:00 (Free Admission 5:00-8:00) Friday 10:30-5:00 Saturday 10:00-5:00 Sunday 10:00-5:00 9

photo: Ken Ilio photo: David Ross Crown Fountain Michigan Ave 55 Chicago Illinois ountainhtml This fountain, located in Chicago's Millennium Park, consists of two 50-foot glass block towers at each end of a shallow reflecting pool The towers project an ever-changing array of video images from a broad social spectrum of Chicago citizens, a reference to the traditional use of gargoyles in fountains, where faces of mythological beings were sculpted with open mouths to allow water, a symbol of life, to flow out Spanish Artist Jaume Plensa adapted this practice by having faces of Chicago citizens projected on LED screens and having water flow through a water outlet in the screen to give the illusion of water spouting from their mouths The collection of faces, Plensa's tribute to Chicagoans, was taken from a cross-section of 1000 residents (text from website Millennium Park) Artist Associate architect Jaume Plensa Krueck + Sexton s photo: Ken Ilio The park is open to the public 24/7 CTA train stations close to Millennium Park include the Red Line Washington Street exit and the Brown/Green/Orange and Purple Line Madison/Wabash Street exit From any of these train stops, head east until you reach the park 10

photo: Julie Fuchs photo: Julie Fuchs Unity Temple Lake Street 875 Oak Park Illinois IL Unity Temple is a Unitarian Universalist church in Oak Park, and the home of the Unity Temple Unitarian Universalist Congregation It was designed and built between 1905 and 1908 It is considered to be one of Wright's most important structures dating from the first decade of the twentieth century Wright was not only living in Oak Park, but was also a Unitarian He divided the community space from the temple space through a low, middle loggia that could be approached from either side This design was one of his first uses of a bipartite design: with two portions of the building similar in composition and separated by a lower passageway To reduce noise from the street, Wright eliminated street level windows in the temple Instead, natural light comes from stained glass windows in the roof Because the members of the parish would not be able to look outside, Unity Temple's stained glass was designed with green, yellow, and brown tones in order to evoke the colours of nature photo: Julie Fuchs 1908 Client Frank Lloyd Wright Universalist congregation of Oak Park jfuchs Sunday Worship: 9:30 and 11:15 am (September - June) First Friday of every month: Family Night, Community Meal at 6:00 pm; Service at 7:00 pm Zen Meditation: every Wednesday, 6:00 pm Unity Temple is located at the intersection of Lake Street and Kenilworth Avenue in downtown Oak Park, Illinois For directions and a map visit the website:

photo: Jeffrey Liem photo: Robert Hildebrand Flamingo S Dearborn St 219 Chicago Illinois Located in front of the Kluczynski Federal Building in Chicago, Calder's Flamingo stands in striking contrast to the black grid of the Mies van der Rohe buildings that surround it The stabile weighs in at nearly 50 tons and is painted in vermilion, which has since been come to be known as 'Calder Red' It is the first work to be commissioned under the federal Percent for Art program, which allocates a percentage of a project's budget to public art Just to the West of the sculpture, a smaller maquette can be seen in the post office building Artist Alexander Calder 24/7 12

photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski BP Pedestrian Bridge BP Bridge 1 Chicago Illinois ehtml Connecting Millennium Park to Daley Bicentennial Plaza, east of the park, this 925-foot-long winding bridge, Frank Gehry's first, provides incomparable views of the Chicago skyline, Grant Park and Lake Michigan Clad in brushed stainless steel panels, the BP Pedestrian Bridge, or simply BP Bridge, complements the Pritzker Pavilion in function as well as design by creating an acoustic barrier from the traffic noise below It also has a 5% slope to allow easy access for people who are physically challenged (text from project's website) photo: Piotr Krajewski Structural engineer Client Gehry Partners Skidmore, Owings & Merrill City of Chicago pkrajewski_pl 13

photo: Piotr Krajewski Lake Shore Drive Apartments N Lake Shore Drive Chicago Illinois Lake Shore Drive is a twin pair of glass-and-steel apartment towers on N Lake Shore Drive along Lake Michigan in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois The towers were not entirely admired at the time they were built, yet they went on to be the prototype for steel and glass skyscrapers worldwide Initially, it was difficult to acquire financing for the project, turned down by lenders like Baird & Warner who considered the design scheme to be too extreme Lake Shore Drive Apartments embody a Modernistic tone with their verticality, grids of steel and glass curtain walls (a hallmark of Mies' skyscrapers), and complete lack of ornamentation Since Mies was a master of minimalist composition, his principle was 'less is more' as it is demonstrated in his self-proclaimed 'skin and bones' architecture (text from Wikipedia) Public access unknown! 1951 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 14

Chicago Federal Center S Dearborn St 219 Chicago Illinois The Chicago Federal Center is actually a collection of three of Mies's buildings The rigid simplicity of the black geometry is considered one of the finest expressions of the 'Second Chicago School' According to the AIA guide of Chicago: "Mies's uncompromising devotion to principle, together with his vaunted sensitivity to proportion and structural detail, and, in this case, the organizational scale, combine to give the complex a monumental urban presence Both towers are curtain-wall structures, characteristic of the high-rise design of Mies's American period Their steel frames, suppressed behind uniform walls of glass and steel, are marked off by projecting steel I-beam mullions The Post Office, a unitary space with a central core, is similarly typical of Mies's reductivist concept of the single-storey pavilion Externally thin yet powerful structural columns of steel brace enormous panes of tinted glass" The Flamingo by Alexander Calder is contained within the plaza Project is not public! 1974 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe 15

photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Andre Staalenhoef Bayard-Condict Bleecker Street 65 New York New York The Bayard-Condict, 65 Bleeker Street This commercial office building is clad in white terra cotta over a masonry wall The Bayard Building was one of the first steel skeleton frame skyscrapers in New York City and the Department of Buildings raised numerous objections to the design before the plans were finally accepted It is one of the first examples of the Chicago school style of architecture in New York City The division of the building into three sections - an ornamented base, a shaft of identical stacked floors, and a decorated crown illustrates Sullivan's views on skyscraper design At 13 stories and 162 feet (49 meters) high, the building does not attempt to disguise its height, but rather accentuates it by leaving relatively undecorated mullions and pilasters Sullivan's signature ornate floral designs decorate the base and top of the facade, and across the spandrels below the window openings Figural sculptures of angels were added at the request of the client photo: Andre Staalenhoef Public access unknown! 1898 Louis Sullivan yep 16
