3 photo: Ken McCown McCormick Tribune Campus Center South State Street 3201 Chicago California Occupying a spot directly beneath an elevated train track, The McCormick Campus Center is the first building designed by Rem Koolhaas in the In order to muffle the noisy trains above, Koolhaas actually designed two distinct buildings that are structurally separated from each other The train is surrounded by an "acoustically isolating stainless steel tube" The Campus Center beneath is entered through a 20 foot high glass portrait of Mies van der Rohe, who established himself at IIT after the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933 It houses a number of services that were previously spread out across the campus, including a bookstore, auditorium, coffee bar, post office, and convenience store The formal layout for the building was inspired by tracking the movements of the students as they crossed under the train tracks, making their way between the residence halls and the classrooms The interior corridors follow these original paths with the services filling in between Floor area/size m² Client OMA - Rem Koolhaas Illinois Institue of Technology 3

8 photo: Chris Carr photo: Chris Carr Marina City N State St 300 Chicago Illinois Built in a time when suburbs where spread rampantly across the, Marina City sought to reverse the trend and create a building complex that would operate as a city within a city It was the first urban post-war high-rise residential complex in the and is widely credited with beginning the residential renaissance of American inner cities Its model of mixed residential and office uses and high-rise towers with a base of parking has become a primary model for urban development in the, and has been widely copied throughout downtown Chicago The two towers have identical floor plans and share a common marina along the Chicago River Their unique shape has given rise to the local nickname, the 'corn cobs' The bottom 19 floors of each tower are used for parking, the 20th floor is an open deck view of the Loop and the 21st through 60th floor contain apartments The top floor (61st) contains a 360-degree open-air roof deck Project is not public! 1967 Bertrand Goldberg From downtown Chicago, walk north along State St until you cross the river; it will be on your left 8

10 Gary Comer Youth Center South Ingleside Avenue 7200 Chicago Illinois The Gary Comer Youth Center was built specifically to support the activities of The South Shore Drill Team and programmes for children of the neighbouring Paul Revere School Educational and recreational spaces wrap the Drill Team's main practice and performance area, with major spaces exposed on the building exterior to promote the activity inside to the community, and invite participation According to the architect, John Ronan, "The idea was to feed off the energy of the Drill Team and let that permeate the building" It is located in the south side of Chicago and stands out against a mix of industrial buildings, empty lots and single family homes Aside from the striking coloured panel façade, the most interesting part of this project is the green roof that is wholly integrated into the building program Here, city children are taught to grow and harvest vegetables, flowers, herbs and grasses Skylights in the garden penetrate to the gymnasium and cafeteria below Floor area/size m² John Ronan Monday - Friday: 08: / Saturday: 09: / Closed on Sunday The building isn't completely open to the public, but one can visit the lobby From downtown Chicago, take I-94 south and exit 71st Street and turn left Turn right onto Chicago Ave and it will be a few blocks down on your left From I-90 North, exit 73rd St and turn right Make an immediate left onto S Chicago Ave It's a few blocks down on our right 10

11 State Street Village South State Street 3303 Chicago Illinois State Street Village is the newest residence hall at IIT, the school where Helmut Jahn received his graduate degree What appears to be a single unified façade running down State Street, is actually 3 buildings, with an exterior mesh skinning connecting the entire length Courtyards and passageways further interrupt the linear progression The SSV was part of a larger drive to revitalize a part of the IIT campus left neglected by its proximity to the Green Line Directly north of the SSV lies Rem Koolhaas' McCormick Tribune Center and across the street is Mies' Crown Hall Unlike the Tribune Center, which minimized the train noise by encasing the tracks in a concrete tube, the SSV chose a more cost effective approach by using lots of concrete, and varying thicknesses of glass to deaden the noise Project is not public! 2003 Murphy-Jahn From Chicago, take the Green Line south to the 35-IIT-Bronzeville stop The building is immediately adjacent 11

12 The Contemporaine N Wells St 516 Chicago Illinois The dynamics of the Contemporaine begin at the entrance, which is literally carved out at the street corner This engaging public space is highlighted by an impressive 45-foot column supporting the tower above Located on a corner lot in the downtown Chicago River North area, this 28-unit, 96,000 square foot condominium building includes a four-story retail and parking base below the 11-story residential tower Tight site restrictions required innovative design solutions The base of the building fills the entire lot yet achieves a pedestrian scale Mirroring the tower above, the structure of the parking garage is exposed with floor-to-ceiling glass In 2004 the building won an Honour Award for distinguished architecture from the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of s (text from architect's website) Project is not public! 14 Sofitel Chicago Water Tower East Chestnut Street 20 Chicago Illinois The Sofitel Chicago Water Tower is a hotel located on the north side of downtown Chicago Its triangular footprint allows for a knife-like edge that protrudes 10 metres at the top, out over Chestnut St This serves as a counterpoint to the John Hancock building, a few blocks away, which tapers inward from its base Composed entirely in glass, the façade's irregular placement of windows creates a dynamic effect, with reflections shimmering across both the opaque and transparent surfaces 2002 Jean-Paul Viguier SA d'ure 14

16 photo: Kathryn Ware Charles M Harper Center S Woodlawn Ave 5807 Chicago Illinois The Charles M Harper Center is an intriguing blend of disparate styles The Gothic Style dominates most of the University of Chicago, but lately it has been transitioning to a more Modern look Directly to the north of the center lies Frank Lloyd Wright's 1910 masterpiece, the Robie House Vinoly's design does a wonderful job of reflecting both while keeping it contemporary at the same time The exterior massing of the school is set back over seven storeys, using linear limestone and cantilevered floors as a nod toward Wright's design The centre of the project, however, is a soaring, glass enclosed atrium, with 83 foot tall steel columns with curved beams found in the Gothic Style This enclosed space serves as a gathering and mingling area, encouraging idea sharing from different fields 2004 Rafael Vinoly s From Lake Shore Drive: Exit at 57th Drive (the Museum of Science and Industry) Go west and curve around the museum Take the fourth right onto the Midway Plaisance and go west to the campus From the freeways: Take I-90/94 to I-55 North to Lake Shore Drive South Exit at 57th Drive (the Museum of Science and Industry) Go west and curve around the museum Take the fourth right onto the Midway Plaisance and go west to the campus 16

17 Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago E Chicago Ave 220 Chicago Illinois The MCA was the first project in the by architect Josef Paul Kleihues, and the first building made specifically for the MCA's use since the institution's founding in 1967 With almost seven times the square footage of the museum's previous facility, the MCA has space to install temporary exhibitions and works from the collection simultaneously The principles of logic and simplicity guided his decisions His design was meant not to interfere with the visitor's ability to concentrate on the art This is apparent in his minimal use of ornamentation or decorative elements He also considered the area in which the building would be located Kleihues chose to integrate the look of the MCA with the neighborhood by selecting Indiana limestone as the material for the exterior base of the building, which is meant to resemble the color of the historic water tower, located just west of the MCA (text from museum website) 1997 Kleihues + Kleihues Monday: Closed Tuesday: 10 am to 8 pm FREE ADMISSION Wednesday to Sunday: 10 am to 5 pm The MCA is located four blocks east of the Chicago Avenue rail stop on the CTA Red Line It is easily accessible by the #10 Museum and #66 Chicago Avenue buses, as well as several Michigan Avenue bus routes 17

20 photo: Stephen Silverman photo: Albert Yau Sky is the Limit West O'Hare Chicago Illinois The passenger corridor between Concourse B and C at terminal 1 of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is home to the largest light sculpture in the world Entitled 'Sky's the Limit', it is composed of 466 neon tubes, that would stretch over a mile long, if laid end to end It runs the entire length of the ceiling above two moving sidewalks, and is composed of white sections on either end with a rainbow of colors in between It is controlled by 3 different computers cycling through various patterns and never repeats itself in the iterations Along the sides of the corridor, undulating walls with various pastel colors make for a very vibrant space photo: Doug Bull Floor area/size m² Artist Michael Hayden 24/7 The project can only be accessed by being inside O'Hare International Airport It is the connection between the B concourse and the C concourse in Terminal

21 James R Thompson Center W Randolph St 100 Chicago Illinois Built in 1985, the Thompson Center is one of those buildings that was both loved and hated from the very start It serves as the primary office building in Chicago for the State of Illinois It is also home to one of the largest art collections in the city with an ever-changing array of exhibits, mostly free to the public Clad entirely in glass, and spanning an entire city block, the curving façade houses a 17-story atrium meant to embody "an open government in action", an ironic phrase, considering Chicago's political history The interior elevator and escalator machinery are primarily exposed, and combined with the over-abundance of mirrors and glass, this space is strangely beautiful Another interesting view of the building is the approach from Daly Plaza, where it appears a UFO has landed in the heart of downtown Chicago Floor area/size m² Murphy-Jahn 8 am - 6 pm Monday - Saturday 21

22 photo: Jeffrey Liem photo: Robert Hildebrand Flamingo S Dearborn St 219 Chicago Illinois Located in front of the Kluczynski Federal Building in Chicago, Calder's Flamingo stands in striking contrast to the black grid of the Mies van der Rohe buildings that surround it The stabile weighs in at nearly 50 tons and is painted in vermilion, which has since been come to be known as 'Calder Red' It is the first work to be commissioned under the federal Percent for Art program, which allocates a percentage of a project's budget to public art Just to the West of the sculpture, a smaller maquette can be seen in the post office building Artist Alexander Calder 24/7 22

23 photo: Robert L Segal photo: Robert L Segal Aqua Tower N Columbus Drive 211 Chicago Illinois In a city known for it's skyscrapers, the Aqua Tower sets itself apart through an elegant undulation of its floor plates, providing a vertical topography that is unmatched in the Chicago skyline At times, it appears as if the building contains vertical pools of water Aqua is an 82-story mixed-use residential skyscraper currently under construction in Chicago's Lakeshore East Once completed, it will be the tallest residential tower in the United States, and also the tallest building in the world designed by a female-led architectural firm It will also be seeking LEED certification upon completion 2009 Associate architect Studio Gang s Loewenberg & Associates photo: Robert L Segal 23

31 photo: Ricardo Bofill photo: Ricardo Bofill United Building West Wacker Drive 77 Chicago Illinois The project for this 50-storey office block sought to favour the possibility of a panoramic view over the city, so that there is an evident predominance of glass on the façade while nevertheless avoiding the formulaic glass tower of arbitrary forms The existence of the American tradition of skyscraper construction, with some especially attractive examples in Chicago, suggested the need to reestablish a dialogue between the classicism of stone and the high-tech of glass The façade reveals a design of classical proportions which recalls Giotto?s campanile in Florence cathedral, divided into different levels linked together by columns Particular attention has been devoted to the detailing and the appearance of the ground floor, the interior of which functions as an atrium, while the upper floors form a classically-proportioned temple on the roof photo: Ricardo Bofill Public access unknown!
