5 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Marco de Trizio Puerta de Europa Plaza de Castilla Madrid These two office towers flank the Paseo de la Castellana, Madrid's most important boulevard The location of a subway interchange made the placement of the two towers near the street impossible Their bold design is in part a response to the need for the footprints of the towers to be set back from the interchange while at the same time bringing the towers together as a single compositional whole The towers lean towards each other and over the plazas, ensuring their visibility from up and down the Paseo and creating a portal which, being at the Northern end of the business district of Madrid, has been called a metaphorical gateway to Europe The façade of each tower is a composition of a major grid -clad in stainless steel conforming to their structure-, a minor grid of red mullions, and a third grid comprising the light grey mullions of the curtain wall (text from website architect) photo: Manuel González Olaechea y Franco Public access unknown! 1995 Main designer, Philip Johnson John Burgee Marco_De_Trizio 5

11 photo: Angel Baltanas photo: Angel Baltanas Glass cube Banco Santander Av de la Ciudad de Santander Boadilla del Monte The glass cube is a part of the mega-project of the Banco Santander headquarters in Madrid Unlike many banks, Banco Santander has not chosen to establish headquarters in a high tower on the Paseo de la Castellana, but chooses a vast and green campus in the rolling countryside just outside the capital This sounds modest but bank manager Botin pulled out all the stops in order to make something delightful Besides a huge volume of luxury offices for 12,000 employees, the campus is also equipped with luxury restaurants, a hotel, an 19-hole golf course, a huge sports complex and a museum The visitors entrance is a cathedral glass cube and is a landmark in the landscape by its height and size In the design there is realized an optimal transparency in which the glass skin and the warped glass roof are hanged on the main construction with a distance of 2,5m The finishing level of this design is extremely high with only stainless steel tensile rods and special developed Quattro nodes photo: Angel Baltanas m², Landscape architect, Urban planner Contractor Alfonso Millanes PeterRoos Octatube Europe Banco Santander 11

12 photo: Marcela Grassi photo: Marcela Grassi Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia Avenida de Labañou A Coruña The Madrid based architecture studio of Victoria Acebo and Ángel Alonso were the winners of the Premio de Arquitectura Joven (young architects prize), and their design for the Arts Centre in A Coruña was selected 'for the interesting architectural result of a mixed programme with dance and museum realised in one volume, which has a formal clarity' Under the same name of Arts Centre, 2 different entities had found their place: a School for Dance and a Museum The lower area which has a concrete façade is where the dance school was located, and the higher floors, with a glass façade contained the spaces of the museum Without any concessions to each other, both parties were combined in a singular image, with combined organisation Due to lack of content for the building it had to close and a new inhabitant had to be found Fortunately, nowadays the building is occupied by and called the National Museum of Science and Technology photo: Marcela Grassi Acebo X Alonso Arquitectos MI_MOA 12

What if we transport to the bar the happiness of the group of people that use the Tetuán Street in summer?
