1 President s Message President Rogelio Trevino President Elect Vice President Corina Salinas Secretary Juanita Lira Treasurer Juan Pablo Gonzalez Program Director Armengol Guerra III Sergeant at Arms Doug Alford In this issue President s Message Program Summary Rotary Club Members Calendar Rotaract originally began as a Rotary International youth program in 1968 in the Charlotte North Rotary Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. It has grown into a major Rotary-sponsored organization of over 10,900 clubs spread around the world and 250,790 members. It is a service, leadership, professional and community service organization for young men and women between the ages Rotoract focuses on the development of young adults as leaders in their communities and workplaces. Clubs around the world also take part in international service projects in a global effort to bring peace and inter- Rogelio Trevino, President national understanding to the world. "Rotoract" stands for "Rotary in Action", although the name originally comes from a combination of "Rotary" and "Interact" (International + Action). Last Wednesday Juan Lira, Juanita Lira,, John Kilburn, Marilu Gorecki, Lorena Rijos, Anna Wirshing, Michael Gonzalez and I had the pleasure of attending the installation of officers for our Rotaract club at Texas A&M International University. The installation was conducted by Asst. District Governor Lupita Zepeda. It was a pleasure to listen to incoming Rotoract President Gabriela Rangel talk about her vision and plans to continue with the growth of the club. Past Rotoract President Ruth Solis gave an overview of her Rotoract year and was proud to announce that they accomplished all of their goals and left the club with a healthy fund balance for this year. Congratulations to Gabriela Rangel, President; Jessica Gutierrez, Vice President; Ashley Vilano, Secretary; Griselda Solis, Treasurer; Jennifer Rodriguez, Parliamentarian; and Debir Vazquez, Risk Manager. Dr. Pat Abrego, Laredo Rotary Club member and Rotaract Sponsor, presented the new officers with Rotaract pins. A big thanks and congratulation goes out to Pat Abrego for the outstanding guidance and support she provides on our behalf. This Thursday our Saint Augustine Interact club will conduct its installation of officers at their noon meeting at the High School. I strongly encourage all of our members to attend the interact meting and support this year s interactors. September is basic education and literacy month for Rotary International and, with board approval, I hope to establish a memorandum of understanding with the Literacy Volunteers of Laredo in support of their literacy efforts. I hope that all our club members will support our literacy initiatives throughout the year. Our fundraiser activities are coming up soon, so I m asking all Rotarians to help us promote and secure sponsors for our 0.5K Scholarthon. Remember that all funds from the scholorthon are dedicated to our perpetual education scholarship fund. Also, please continue to secure bowling teams for our first annual bowling tournament. Don t forget to S.O.S. support our satellite and attend their meetings at Tony Roma s on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month. Continue to be people of action and offer Service above Self in order to be the Inspiration! September 19, 2018 September Rotarian of the Month Arturo Limon The Four Way Of the things we think, say or do: First Is it the TRUTH? Second Is it FAIR to all concerned? Third Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Fourth Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
2 Dr. Eva Noyola - McDonald Observatory A stellar presentation was delivered by Astrophysics Scientist Dr. Eva Noyola. Dr. Noyola of the University of Texas Astronomy department and the famed McDonald Observatory discussed Black Holes and the science behind them. She was born in Mexico City and has always been fascinated with Black Holes. Dr. Noyola obtained her undergraduate degree from National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She then pursued and earned her PhD in astrophysics from UT-Austin in Additional investigations and postdoctoral research was conducted in Germany at the Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching. She later returned to the McDonald Observatory as a Research Scientist in Dr. Noyola s additional accomplishments include, but are not limited to, working on the Hubble Space Telescope with astronomer Karl Gebhart. Her expertise discovered evidence of a new size and type of Black Hole. She identified that there was a black hole 40,000 times bigger than the mass of the sun. It s one of the largest globular star clusters that orbits the Milky Way and is located in the core of Omega Centauri. With her specialized observation and techniques, she studies the way stars move within small objects. She looks for clues that are present in medium-size black holes. Dr. Noyola s Presentation answered several questions: How do we observe black holes? What is a black hole? How are black holes formed? How do we detect a black hole? What happens in the act when a black hole forms? What are the different types of black holes? How is an intermediate mass black hole detected? Where do intermediate mass black holes come from? Do intermediate mass black holes behave like supermassive ones? By: Celina Maniece For more information: contact Dr. Eva Noyola at noyola@astro.as.utexas.edu or (512)
