1 : October 2011 VISUAL Centre For Contemporary Art & The George Bernard Shaw Theatre, Carlow Riding out the Storm Survival, Renewal and Recovery This year s RIAI conference focuses on how architects can adapt to the current crisis; what are the inherent strengths and weaknesses in Irish architecture; and how can the profession, and the RIAI capitalise on the strengths and reputation of Irish architecture to develop strategies for renewal and recovery in the years ahead. The 2009 RIAI strategic review explored how architects might address the challenges of today s crisis. One outcome of the process was the conviction that while architects are currently in a very difficult place, we are positive in our determination to contribute to the wider debate about paths to national recovery, and how architecture might develop positive initiatives for the future. There was a consensus that less work should not mean fewer ideas, but rather the opposite; the current recession offers a time for reflection on both the successes and failures of the past, and the resulting Action Plan sets out 11 key policy objectives for survival, renewal and recovery, not only of the profession but of Ireland as a whole. This year s RIAI conference expands on these themes under the title Riding out the Storm Survival, Renewal and Recovery. A range of leading keynote speakers will address the aspects of today s challenges, and thought provoking panel discussions will examine how architects and architecture can contribute to a vision for the future. Edward Jones leading architect and member of the original Flying Circus at UCD in the seventies gives an overview of the period, and seeks to identify the values and qualities which have characterised the evolution of Irish architecture since our entry to the European Community almost half a decade ago. Draft Programme 1000 Open Discussion: Panel to be confirmed 1100 Coffee Break 1130 The Government Policy on Architecture Keynote Speaker: Martin Colreavy, Chief Advisor on Architecture Policy The Government Policy on Architecture is a milestone statement on the social, environmental and cultural importance of architecture, and the contribution of good design in the daily-life and well-being socially as a whole. The policy recognises the importance of architectural quality as a cornerstone of national policy on the built environment, and commits the State to ensuring the architectural quality of all buildings procured through State funding. The keynote speech by Martin Colreavy, Chief Advisor on Architecture Policy, will outline the state of progress on key actions in the policy, and the ensuing discussion will examine the role of the policy Open Discussion: Panel to be confirmed 1300 Lunch 1400 Strategies for Survival, Renewal and Recovery Keynote Speaker: Conor Skehan The 2009 RIAI strategic review set out to conduct a wide-ranging review of the RIAI and the profession as a whole to review its strengths and weaknesses at this time of extraordinary economic, social and environmental uncertainty. Two years on, the profession continues to be decimated by declining workloads, a dearth of new commissions and a crippling cycle of belowcost fee tendering. Kingsley Aikins, former Director of Ireland Funds, and international authority on global diaspora and networking issues, will give the keynote address on the importance of networking strategies in today s global economy, and how Irish architecture s network in the diaspora can be utilised to expand the reputation and identity of Irish architecture internationally Open Discussion: Panel to be confirmed 1100 Coffee Break 1130 Paradigms for a New Century Keynote Speaker: Rafael Moneo, Dean, Harvard Graduate School Throughout an international career in architectural design, teaching and writing, Rafael Moneo has distinguished himself in seeking a balance between innovation and tradition, in particular by weaving his works into their receiving environments and cultural contexts, thereby enhancing the daily lives and social fabric of their receiving environments. 3 Kenneth Frampton Edward Jones Rafael Moneo Professor Kenneth Frampton currently is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and holds the position of Ware Professor of Architecture at Columbia University. He was trained as an architect at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, in London and has worked as an architect in England, Israel and the United States. He has taught as a visiting professor in numerous schools of architecture worldwide including the Berlage Institute, Amsterdam, the Eidgenosche Technsche Hochschule, Zurich, The EPFL Laussane, and the Universita della Svizzera Italiana in Mendrisio, Switzerland. In 1972 he was a Loeb Fellow at the GSD Harvard University and in 1975 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1986 he was in residence as a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg, Berlin and in 1993 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Frampton has also been the recipient of the following awards: the AIA Honors Award (1985), the Medaille d Or Academie d Architecture Paris (1987), the ACSA Topaz Medal (1991), the President s Medal of the Architectural League of New York (2005), the Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2008) and the AIA NY State Educator Honor Award. He also received honorary doctorate degrees from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm (1991), the University of Waterloo (1995), the California College of the Arts and Crafts (1999), the Catholic University of Lima, Peru (2010) and the Ion Mincu University, Bucharest, Romania (2010). He has written extensively and contributed to numerous national and international journals. His publications include Modern Architecture: A Critical History (1980), Modern Architecture and the Critical Present (1993), American Masterworks (1995), Studies in Tectonic Culture (1995), Le Corbusier: Architect of the 21st Century (2002), Labour Work & Architecture (2002), and the updated and expanded fourth edition of Modern Architecture: A Critical History (2007). This book has been translated into twelve languages. Edward Jones graduated from the Architectural Association School in 1963 and since 1973 has been a principal in private practice. He won first prize in 1972 with Jeremy Dixon in an international competition for Northamptonshire County Offices. The Jeremy Dixon and Edward Jones partnership was formed in 1989 and became a limited company in April The practice is currently working on the Panopticon Building for University College London, a Masterplan for Exhibition Road, won in competition in 2003, the Portrait Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Phase 2 to the Said Business School, Oxford, and major commercial developments at King s Cross, Paradise Street, Liverpool, Regent s Palace Hotel and St James Square. They are masterplanners of Somerset House where their fountains, café and bridge were installed in 2001 and the National Gallery in London, where they have recently completed a major renovation of the Gallery. Edward Jones work has been widely published and exhibited - he represented Britain at the 1980 and 2002 Venice Biennales. From he was senior tutor at the Royal College of Art. Since the mid-1970s he has been a visiting professor at various universities in North America including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Philadelphia, Rice, Toronto, Waterloo and at Kent State University, Florence and UCD Dublin. In 2001 Edward Jones was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Portsmouth and an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Cardiff. In 2003 he was awarded an Honorary Professorship from the University of Cardiff, and he was appointed a Trustee to the Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust in Edward was honoured with a CBE in the 2011 New Years Honours. Rafael Moneo was born in Tudela in the province of Navarra in He obtained his architectural degree in 1961 from the Escuela Técnica Superior of Madrid. In 1970 he won a teaching chair in architectural theory at the Escuela Técnica Superior of Barcelona where he taught until 1980, when he became chaired professor of composition at the Escuela Técnica Superior of Madrid. In 1985 he was appointed Chairman of the Architecture Department of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, a position he held until In 1991 he was named Josep Lluís Sert Professor of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Rafael Moneo combines his professional activity as an architect with that as lecturer, critic and theoretician. His writings have been published in numerous professional magazines and the presentation of his work through lectures and exhibitions has taken him to institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. Rafael Moneo has been awarded numerous distinctions among them the Pritzker Prize for Architecture in 1996 and the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2003.

4 Martin Colreavy Having extensive experience as a Senior Architect within the private sector, working both in Ireland and Germany, Martin has been involved in many major award winning developments in the last 15 years in Civic Design, Urban Design, mixed-use developments, educational buildings and Housing. Following the completion of a first class honours degree in Architecture in 1995 from the Dublin Institute of Technology, Martin completed a post graduate Masters Degree in Urban Design from University College Dublin in He is the Chief Architectural Advisor in DoAHG with a specialist role in Built Heritage, Architectural Policy and Urban Design with responsibility for the new Government Policy on Architecture : Towards a Sustainable Future, Delivering Quality within the Built Environment. Previously within the DoEHLG he was involved in various policy documents on Architecture and Urban Design, such as Quality Housing for Sustainable Communities He represents Ireland as state party on the Joint Programming Initiative, JPI Executive Board for Cultural Heritage Research within Europe. Previously within the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, Martin has held positions as RIAI professional practice examiner , RIAI Honorary Treasurer and more recently RIAI Vice-President 2010 and is currently Chair RIAI Urban Design Committee. He is also Co-chair of the Government Policy on Architecture Advisory Committee, GPAAC and is an Honorary Academician of the Academy of Urbanism, an organisation which promotes exemplary practice in quality Urbanism throughout Great Britain and Ireland.
