3 AMBA shines during their visit to the The month of May is always a busy month for the. This year was no exception. Not only did the have the MBA graduation dinner, PhD colloquia and other events, but AMBA, our accreditation body, also visited the School on 31 May. This visit was a networking opportunity for our MBA alumni and students in close proximity. During the visit, their managing director, Andrew Main Wilson, utilised the opportunity to tell us more about the services and benefits that members of AMBA enjoy. Each alumnus who attended the day had the opportunity to register as a member of an AMBA-accredited business school at the Association of MBAs. These members will in future receive newsletters and communication of other events as well as special services for the association on a continuous basis. Mr Andrew Main Wilson, the CEO of AMBA and prof Tommy du Plessis, acting director of the NWU, during the network function in Potchefstroom. A national event was held on 1 June at the Wits for all of the AMBA-accredited business schools in South Africa. 4 Waar die Weste en die Ooste ontmoet M arita Heyns en haar man, Michael, het beide die geleentheid gehad om referate by die privaat Universiteit van Baeksok in Cheonan, SuidKorea te lewer. Meer as 32 lande van regoor die wêreld was by die kongres verteenwoordig en Marita het die geleentheid vir skakeling goed benut. Hierdie universiteit het meer as voltydse studente. Dit was vir haar n ongelooflike ervaring. Wat sy as interessant ervaar het, was hoe belangrik n tersiêre akademiese kwalifikasie vir die Koreaanse studente is. Soveel so dat van die studente so vêr sal gaan om selfmoord te pleeg sou hul keuring by een van die top universiteite nie toegestaan word nie. Marita se referaat het gehandel oor Generational Diversity (volledige akademiese artikel volg in die Alere Flammam Nuusbrief se Julie-uitgawe). Haar ervaring van Suid-Korea is dat dit n hoogsontwikkelde land is. Suid-Korea is die tuiste van die handelsmerk Samsung wat vir almal n baie bekende handelsnaam is. Hyundai en Kia is ook ander bekende uitvoerprodukte van Suid-Korea wat hul ekonomie n hupstoot gee. Die Boeddhistiese geloof is tradisioneel dominant, maar die Christelike geloof is ook baie sterk. Wat haar opgeval het, is die waardesisteem van die universiteit wat berus op vrede, respek en nederigheid. Die dissipline en hardwerkendheid van die kultuur is noemenswaardig. Suid-Korea is n moeilike land om as reisiger besoek af te lê; die rede daarvoor is dat hulle hul eie unieke taal en skrif het. Daar is nie baie mense in die land wat Engels goed kan praat en verstaan nie, wat kommunikasie kompliseer. NEWS Moderne kampus teen die berg met splinternuwe geboue. Marita se man, Michael, het tydens die besoek n memorandum van verstandhouding (MOU) met die Baeksok Universiteit gesluit, wat uitruiling van studente en dosente, asook samewerking oor die algemeen in die toekoms vergemaklik

5 Popo Molefe Education Trust assists a student from the NWU! Thando Vokozela, a third-year LLB student at the NWU, is one of five students who received a Popo Molefe Education Trust Scholarship for her studies. Prof Tommy du Plessis is a trustee of the Popo Molefe Education Trust and, on 2 June, he interviewed Thando as a potential recipient of the bursary. According to Prof Tommy, her academic record is impressive and up to the now she has obtained four distinctions and already passed 13 subjects. This bursary is only awarded to students whose personal circumstances and academic record fit into the goals of the Popo Molefe Education Trust. According to Thando, the foundation has taken initiative to fill a gap that is currently standing in the way of deserving students and them reaching their full potential as the future leaders of our country. 6 Harde werk beloon tydens MBA-gradedag O m n MBA aan te pak, verg deursettingsvermoë, verbintenis en n hele paar opofferings. Tog is dit seker een van die verrykendste ervarings om te beleef wanneer die dag van die gradeplegtigheid aanbreek en jy as n MBAgegradueerde daar staan. Ons sê hartlik geluk aan elke MBA-gegradueerde wat op 24 Mei hul graad aan die Skool vir Besigheid en Korporatiewe Bestuur aan die NWU verwerf het. Mag die toekoms met net soveel entoesiasme en volharding gepaardgaan. Die NWU Besigheidskool se toppresteerder, Yolande Peach van Vanderbijlpark, het tydens die graduandi-dinee die goue medalje van Ou Mutual ontvang. Peach is n onafhanklike finansiële bestuurskonsultant, wat tans op kontrakte in Zimbabwe en Zambië vir die konsultasie-maatskappy Redford Capital werk. Vir Peach het die maatskappyprojek in die MBA-kursus uitgestaan. Mens kan amper nie n MBA verwerf as jy nie eers getoets word hoe jy alles wat jy in vorige modules geleer het, kan toepas nie. Dit was harde werk en klippe kou, maar verseker die beste van die kursus. Die feit dat die NWU Besigheidskool ook internasionaal deur AMBA geakkrediteer is, was natuurlik n pluspunt, voeg sy by. Almari Stander, tans woonagtig in KwaZulu-Natal, het die silwermedalje van PPS ontvang vir haar uitsonderlike skripsie. Dié toekenning word al jare lank tydens die MBA-dinee aan die beste skripsiestudent oorhandig. Sy het haar skripsie gedoen oor die bemagtiging van vroue, deur middel van e-handel, waar sy gekyk het hoe vroue n bestaan maak deur aanlyn besighede te hê. Stander se skripsie is onder die studieleiding van prof Stephan van der Merwe voltooi. NEWS Vanjaar het die beste maatskappyprojek wat deur die groep Take 5! aangebied is, die Aspen-Pharmacare-wisseltrofee ontvang vir hul uitstekende strategiese bestuursaanbieding aan n maatskappy.

7 Almari en haar man, Herman Stander. Aan die einde van 2012 het ek besluit om n MBA aan te pak om sodoende my grafieseontwerpbesigheidjie tot n Furtune 500 reus-te groei. Alhoewel ek in Pretoria gebaseer was, het die besluit om deur die Besigheidskool te studeer natuurlik gekom. Die ander instansies was te duur en net nie aanlokkend nie. Miskien is dit omdat Potch my alma mater is; maar dit was beslis n besturing. As grafiese ontwerper het ek aanvanklik soos n vis op droë grond gevoel tussen die ingenieurs en corporates. My eerste indruk toe ek in die openingseremonie sit, was dat dié ding dalk te vêr bo my vuurmaakplek is. Maar ek is geneig om by die diepkant in te spring en ek moes swem! Met die eerste eksamens kon my familie skaars met my uithou. Alle huishoudelike take is saam met persoonlike higiëne by die venster uit en het plek gemaak vir sticky notes, geel papier, swart penne, pienk highlighters, flip-files en hope van Woolies se Sugar Coated Babies. Hoera vir MBA! Deur Almari Stander beste skripsiestudent, MBA-klas van 2015 Die beste ding van die kursus is die sindikaatgroep. Alhoewel dit aanvanklik angswekkend was om in n kwessie van twee dae kandidate te kies saam met wie ek die drie-jaar-pad moes aandurf, was dié groep my redding en my veilige vesting; ten spyte van ons uiteenlopende persoonlikhede het die A-Team mekaar deur dik en dun bygestaan. Ek moet ook noem dat ons een van die min groepe is wat van die begin tot einde onveranderd gebly het. Dit sê baie van die eise wat die kursus op n mens stel. Deur die loop van my eerste jaar het die finansies begin noustrop trek. Soos wat ek meer tyd vir my studies gemaak het, moes ek meer en meer werk wegwys. Tot my geluk het Aspen in die tyd aangekondig dat hulle MBA-beurse gaan toeken en my aansoek aanvaar. Ek kon my tweede jaar sonder finansiële druk aanpak, en aan die einde van 2014 had ek twee jaar in my sak! Om n MBA te doen is nie so moeilik nie, selfs vir n oorwegende regterbrein kreatiwiteit en uithouvermoë kan n mens vêr bring. Dit is baie werk en baie tydsaam, maar harde werk word altyd beloon. Danksy my stamina en aanvaarbare rapport was ek geseën met nog n Aspen-beurs in my derde jaar. Dit was absolute

8 genade van Bo, want my man het ook in dié tyd sy werk gestaak om voltyds natuurbewaring te gaan studeer. Die Ateam, (agter) is Johan Potgieter, Douglas Dall, Almarie Stander en (voor) Pieter Uys en Gerhard Venter. My derde jaar was my gunsteling jaar. Die vak strategiese bestuur, die besigheidsprojek en die skripsie was die mees uitdagende maar ook die mees lonende elemente van die MBA. Met my skripsie het ek die bemagtiging van vroue deur middel van e-handel ondersoek. My studieleier, prof Stephan van der Merwe, was n groot hulp en mentor. Hy het soms sy hande vol gehad met my vrae en eise. Die navorsing het egter vir my n nuwe wêreld oopgemaak deur te wys hoe Suid-Afrikaanse vroue n bestaan maak deur middel van aanlynbesighede. Ek is aangeraak en geïnspireer deur die vroue met wie ek onderhoude gevoer het. My skripsie is ook vir my as entrepreneur van groot waarde, want soos ek vroeër genoem het, het my man van beroep verander. Ons woon op die oomblik op n natuurreservaat in Weenen, KwaZulu-Natal, waar hy sy praktiese jaar as Rhino Monitor voltooi. Die internet bied talle geleenthede, veral vir mense wat op afgesonderde plekke woon. Ek het besluit om eers vir n paar maande af te vat om die wild en natuurskoon in diepte te bewonder. Ek doen af en toe vryskutwerk en het ook n blog begin oor die lewe hier in die wildernis: wildernessieblog.wordpress.com/. As ek terugkyk na die afgelope drie en n half jaar, kan ek nie glo hoe die lewe mens op paaie en afdraai-paaie neem nie. Ons het n gesegde: Things don t always work out the way you plan, but they always work out. So gebeur alles vir n rede. Wie weet wat die wêreld hier in die wildernis vir my inhou? Alhoewel ek nie my oorspronklike doel met die MBA behaal het nie, het dit my as individu op soveel wyse bemagtig; en wat n absolute voorreg om te kon studeer by n instansie wat elke student by die naam ken! Book on sustainable management development issues see the light Sustainable Management Development in Africa, deals with management development issues in South Africa, which is a researched based publication that consist of articles from academics throughout the Africa continent. Aimed at researchers, academics and advanced students alike, this book lays the groundwork for the application of uniquely African theoretical and practical perspectives for sustainable management and organisational operation as explained from a contemporary African point of view. Professor Yvonne du Plessis from our Mafikeng site of delivery, played a key role as a sub editor for this issue, in conjunction with Professor Hamid Kazeroony from the USA and professor Bill Buenar Puplampu from Ghana.

9 NWU-kundigheid betrek deur Botswana se energiesektor Die NWU sal Botswana se Departement van Energiesake behulpsaam wees om n regverdige brandstof-winsmarge te bepaal. Dit volg op die ondertekening van die grootste kontrak wat die Noordwes-Universiteit se Skool vir Besigheid en Korporatiewe Bestuur (NWU-SBKB) nóg losgeslaan het. n Historiese moment. Alle rolspelers in Botswana se brandstofbedryf het saamgekom vir die ondertekening van die kontrak tussen Botswana se Departement van Energiesake en die NWU se Adviesburo vir Kleinsakeondernemings (ABKS). Mnr Herman Thom van die NWU se Adviesburo vir Kleinsakeondernemings (ABKS) is die programleier vir die projek. Hy sê hulle is aangestel vir n tydperk van drie jaar om n kleinhandelwinsmargemodel te implementeer, en om n soortgelyke model vir die oliebedryf in Botswana te ontwikkel en implementeer. Sommige van die vernaamste toekomstige uitdagings van die bedryf sal wees om n gunstige markomgewing te handhaaf wat indiensneming sal ondersteun en ruimte sal skep vir entrepreneuriese ontwikkeling en veilige investering in die land. Die beskikbaarheid van n voldoende voorraad brandstof en verwante produkte is net so belangrik, sê hy. Eerstens moet ons die nuwe model vir Botswana se groothandelbrandstofbedryf ontwikkel en implementeer. Hierdie model moet die nodige leiding gee aan hulle om n regverdige winsmarge te bepaal. Die NWU-SBKB sal ook met brandstofkleinhandelaars en brandstofstasie-eienaars in Botswana saamwerk. Dit volg op werk wat drie jaar gelede gedoen is om n model vir die Botswana-kleinhandelbedryf te ontwikkel. Ons moet nou ook ondersoek wat n regverdige winsmarge vir hulle behoort te wees, want die winsmarge word deur hulle regering gereguleer. Hy sê wat hom en sy medekonsultant, mnr William van der Merwe, veral opgewonde maak oor die reusetaak wat op hulle wag, is die wete dat hulle n noodsaaklike bydrae sal lewer om een van die grootste industrieë in Botswana ekonomiese lewensvatbaar te hou. Dit sal verdere stabiliteit vir Botswana se brandstofbedryf verseker. Dit sal ook help om al die rolspelers te beskerm en riglyne daarstel om te verseker dat almal in die bedryf regverdige vergoeding ontvang. In die volgende vier maande sal die twee konsultante ten minste 70 nagte in Botswana deurbring. Hulle sal van dorp tot dorp reis en as deel van hulle navorsing by 60 van die meer as 200 brandstofstasies in Botswana aangaan. Prof Tommy du Plessis, direkteur van die NWU-SBKB, sê die skool en die ABKS het uitgebreide ervaring in hierdie verband. Ons onderneem al sedert 1997 brandstofverwante ondersoeke plaaslik sowel as in Namibië, Swaziland en Lesotho, en ons is trots op ons kundigheid. In 2015 is die ABKS se mandaat vir Namibië uitgebrei om die modellering en bepaling van die groothandelmarge van brandstof vir die oliebedryf in Namibië in te sluit. Hierdie mandaat is verleng tot Dit is n uitstekende geleentheid om die NWU se reputasie in Botswana uit te bou. Dit is ook n wonderlike bemarkingsgeleentheid vir die NWU-SBKB. Hierdie kontrak is n welkome en broodnodige kontantinspuiting vir die NWU-SBKB.

10 Proff Magali Simard, Viviane Sergi, Danielle Laberge and Monique Aubry from UQAM, Prof Yvonne Du Plessis from NWU School of Business and Governance Mafikeng Campus. Collaboration in Project Management pays off visiting the University of Quebec at Montréal (UQAM) Professor Yvonne du Plessis presented a paper on Emotional labour and stress of construction project managers in South Africa at the 21st Conference of IAMB 2016 in Montréal, Canada in May. Together with colleagues in Project Management from the University of Quebec at Montréal (UQAM), they established a collaborative research initiative on 25 May 2016 in Montreal, Canada. Professor du Plessis said: It is time we take charge of our own destiny as women who have a passion for doing project work as we have much to offer. When I initiated the idea of women collaboration in project research and teaching to a group of academic colleagues at UQAM, well known for their international project management programmes and consultancy work, they grabbed the opportunity and said it is high time for such an initiative. We have already started our groundwork and are eventually planning this as a global initiative in projects from all continents. Prof du Plessis book Project Management: A Behavioural Perspective Principles, Practices and Cases, published by Pearson was also welcomed as a new breath into traditional project management and is viewed as a valued expansion in the body of knowledge.

11 Wat Nou, Suid-Afrika? Dr Theuns Eloff se boek Wat Nou, Suid-Afrika? is 5 Mei om 19:00 by The Roots bekendgestel. Hy is n buitengewone professor aan die NWU Skool vir Besigheid en Korporatiewe Bestuur. Hierdie glansgeleentheid was beslis een om opgeteken te word in die argiewe. Tim du Plessis, oud-koerantman en huidige hoof van Aktualiteit by kyknet het die onderhoud met dr Eloff gevoer. Interessante onderwerpe en temas uit sy boek is in diepte bespreek en die gehoor is die geleentheid gegun om aan die gesprek deel te neem. Met die titel-vraag word belangstelling vanuit alle oorde geprikkel. Hierdie vraag wat op elke Suid-Afrikaner se lippe is, is informeel en in verstaanbare taal aan die gehoor oorgedra. Tim du Plessis is n lid van die SA Nasionale Redakteursforum en voorsitter van die Nieman Fund-trust van suidelike Afrika en dr Theuns Eloff tydens die boekbekendstelling op 5 Mei.

12 Loopbaanvooruitsigte wink by die jaarlikse loopbaanskou op NWU Die NWU Besigheidskool was soos oudergewoonte een van vele BBP-gaste (wat bestaan het uit maatskappye wat werknemers werf) by die NWU Loopbaansentrum se loopbaanskou. Die algemene dag het plaasgevind op die oop grasperk voor die Ferdinand Postma Biblioteek waar enige student, voorgraads of nagraads, welkom was om die stalletjies te besoek. Die Besigheidskool het baie besoekers ontvang en veral navrae oor die MBA, Projekbestuur en die Nagraadse Diploma in Bestuur gehad. Vir ons is dit lekker om met die studente en verbygangers te praat oor loopbaanmoontlikhede; die Besigheidskool het soveel om te bied, sê Marilize Minné. Vanjaar het prof Stephan van der Merwe en mnr Johan Jordaan die loopbaanskou by die Vaaldriehoekkampus bygewoon omdat die Besigheidskool nou n afleweringspunt in Vanderbijlpark het. Die loopbaandag by die Fakulteit Ingenieurswese is geskeduleer vir 19 Julie. Die ingenieurs is baie loopbaangeoriënteerd en dit is opmerklik hoe ernstig hul studies opgeneem word uit vorige jare se ervaring. Ons het wel ervaar dat die meerderheid studente wat ons stalletjie besoek het, nog nie die regte hoeveelheid werkservaring het om vir n MBA aansoek te doen nie, maar glo dat diegene wat wel in n MBA belanggestel het, verseker oor n paar jaar sal kom aanklop. Ons sal beslis volgende jaar weer betrokke wees by die Loopbaanskou. Die kwaliteit van uitstallers en ook die organisering van die geleentheid deur die NWU se Loopbaansentrum was van hoogstaande gehalte.

13 Colleagues network as one business school On 4 May, the NWU School of Business & Governance in Potchefstroom visited our colleagues in Mafikeng. A few critical matters were touched upon, after which they went and showed us their new facilities at Leopard Park. Everyone was very impressed with the exceptional appearance of the buildings and believes that it will complement the image of the Business School. The visit was concluded with a delicious Kalahari lunch at the Leopard Park Golf Estate. The networking and joviality were very enjoyable. Proff Raymond Parsons and Wilma Viviers with Mr Martin Cameron. 27 May 2016: SEIFSA Indaba On Friday 27 May 2016, Prof Raymond Parsons from the NWU Business School attended the Southern Africa Metal and Engineering Indaba held at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Conference Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg. The Indaba was an attempt to spark the revival of the metal and engineering sector in particular, and manufacturing in general by providing stakeholders, business executives and captains of industry, policy-makers and government ministers, as well as labour leaders, an opportunity to discuss matters of common interest calmly, robustly and constructively in order to improve the performance of this sector and grow the slumbering South African economy.

14 PhD study of Marita Heyns gives way to the development of new Trust Model Ernest Hemmingway said: The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them. Marita Heyns was recently awarded her PhD in Psychology studying the same concept, but within the work context. The degree was conferred upon her at the recent autumn Graduation Ceremony of the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal). Marita was one of the seven PhD students who obtained their degrees under the guidance of Prof Ian Rothmann, Director of the Research Focus Area Optentia, on the Campus. In her thesis, Trust within the work context: Conceptualisation, measurement and outcomes, Marita investigated the measurement invariance of a trust measurement instrument for 539 male and female South African employees, studied the interplay between predictors of trust and trust itself, and tested a structural model that identifies the nature of relationships between trust, psychological needs satisfaction, work engagement and intentions to quit. This thesis makes substantial contributions to the field of Psychology: Firstly, it offers a suitable trust measurement instrument of which the reliability and measurement invariance have been verified so that it can be used with confidence within a South African workplace setting. Secondly, the study contributes by unpacking trust, which is a complex construct, in such a way that the role and influence of the various bases of trust can be construed more clearly. A leading contribution of this study is the development of a trust model that identifies the nature of relationships between trust, psychological needs satisfaction, work engagement and turnover intentions. Marita has been a senior lecturer at the North-West University since Marita Heyns received her PhD in Psychology earlier this year.

15 High level dignitaries acted as guest speakers at MBALI International Conference Prof Hein Prinsloo from our Mafikeng site, delivered two papers at the MBALI (Management, Business, Administration & Legal Initiatives) International Conference from 6-8 July. This conference was presented by the University of Zululand and is located in Richardsbay. According to prof Hein, the conference was very well attended and organised. High level dignitaries attended as guest speakers which include Lindiwe Zulu (Minister of small business development) as well as Alojzy Nowak the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Warsaw University in Poland which impressed delegates with his analysis and economic views on Europa. Prof Hein delivered two papers: 1. North West Development Corporation s marketing communication of support services to SMME s 2. Effects of ICT adoption by SME owners on production in the Borolong area of Botswana Prof Hein Prinsloo at the MBALI Conference in Richardsbay.

16 MBAchievers and Vision 4 Change: a winning combination As part of the MBA programme of the NWU School of Business and Governance and as a requisite of the Operations Management module MBA students need to assist a non-profit organisation (NPO) of their choice to improve their income and overall functioning. The MBAchievers group engaged AMT Community Development, now known as Vision 4 Change, to assist them with the overall improvement of their NPO. In the first year of our MBA programme the MBAchievers completed a study on the transformational leadership at AMT Placement Services (Pty) Ltd as part of our Organisational Behaviour module. This made it much easier to work with AMT Community Development for our Information Management module as well, which then led to us conducting the project for the Operations Management module on this particular NPO. AMT Community Development was established as an NPO in Their goal is to make a difference in children s lives and offer them a better future. Prior to becoming Vision 4 Change, their focus was on promoting eye screenings and testing, immunisations, ear tests, employability skills and empowerment, safety at schools and classroom upgrades. However, their most popular project was highlighting the need for eye screenings and improving the eyesight of learners at an early stage, as impaired vision hinders the learning process. Now registered as a public benefit organisation, Vision 4 Change mainly focuses on improving the eyesight of learners nationally. In order for them to focus on this they require funding, and it was rather challenging to establish a business leg for such an organisation. We brainstormed and came up with other alternatives to generate income for their organisation. Sheena Mangaroo-Pillay, Theshan Govender, Xander van Wyk, Izak Van Niekerk, Lloyd Bell, Adele Kloppers and Olivia Vaughan. The MBAchievers group advised them and assisted them in setting up an information management system that now allows them to maintain proper governance. This system will also contribute to clear accountability, transparency, compliance and effectiveness. The group has also suggested that Vision 4 Change include a DonateBlindly button on their existing Facebook profile and Twitter handle through which individuals, corporates and the like can upload videos in which they are blindfolded while doing daily tasks to understand what it feels like to be visually impaired. This then results in them making donations. This concept is based on a campaign by the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Foundation, which creates hype on Facebook and people then nominate friends and family to upload videos as well. This will ultimately result in more people getting to know about Vision 4 Change and make more donations. In addition, we assisted them in putting together a presentation they will be able to offer to any possible corporate donor going forward. The presentation is of a high level and good quality, and indicates the past work done as well as their current and future intentions. MBAchievers then guided them on how to actually present this to corporates. Vision 4 Change presented this to the board of a well-known company early in June and was awarded R1 million towards their initiatives. MBAchievers are very pleased to have assisted in this intervention. The feeling among the MBAchievers is one of reward and humility as we begin to understand the hardships of the NPO and its beneficiaries. Vision 4 Change coupled with the MBA has certainly made us see things in a different light.
