2 V O O R W O O R D AAN DIE EINDE VAN NOG N JAAR Hier is ons weer aan die einde van nog ʼn jaar! Ek voel geëerd om hierdie boodskap in die laaste BKMail van 2015 te skryf en dra dit soos ander jare weer op aan almal wat die afgelope jaar so toegewyd saam met my die uitdagings en vreugdes van hul onderskeie rolle binne B&KM beleef het. Verandering, die nou al byna afgesaagde term, was weer ʼn feitlik daaglikse deel van ons almal se lewens, asook van B&KM in die algemeen. Ons het al ver gevorder met veranderinge en verbeteringe aan bestuursprosesse en -sisteme, gehalte van ons personeel op sommige vlakke, ons toerusting en verskeie ander. Die opbouende wyse waarop ons die soms pynlike veranderinge benader het, is vir my ʼn duidelike teken van ʼn span wat saamgestel is uit mense van besonderse gehalte. Ek is maar alte bewus van die feit dat die vereistes wat hierdie voortdurende veranderinge in, nie net ons maatskappy nie, maar ook ons samelewing daagliks aan ons almal stel, dit net sóveel meer uitdagend maak. The elephant in the room in our company has been, for a number of years, the process of identifying the most suitable location for our Head Office. This has been an extremely sensitive and perhaps even disruptive element that we, whether we liked it or not, had to not only confront, but had to take a final decision on and then implement it. Years of debate culminated in a Board decision earlier this year that the company s Head Office will relocate to Upington, a process that has already started and must be completed by this time next year latest. My boodskap oor die toekoms van ons maatskappy, die land se ekonomie en ook die internasionale sake-omgewing is nou al vir ʼn hele paar jaar ongelukkig min of meer dieselfde. Ek het egter tans meer vertroue dat ons maatskappy, ten spyte van al die negatiewe nuus oor die ekonomie, meer gereed as ooit is om te groei en ontwikkel na iets werkliks besonders, ʼn maatskappy wat nie net in hierdie deel van die land en Namibië ʼn bekende en gerespekteerde naam in konstruksie is nie, maar een met ʼn baie breër voetspoor. Ons is werklik nou reg vir groter dinge. Ook om ons rol as werkgewer en die sosiale verantwoordelikhede wat daarmee gepaardgaan, na behore na te kom. Ons is onlangs aangestel vir die nuwe wisselaar op die R300 in Bellville en verwag ook eersdaags ʼn paar ander lekker aanstellings op Kolomela- en Sishen-myne. Ons het goeie hoop vir ʼn projek by Port Nolloth se hawe, een naby Saldanha en nog een by Koeberg langs die Weskus en nog een of twee naby Upington. Verder is Hennie en sy kollegas in die tenderkantoor verwoed besig met die voorbereiding van nog nuwe tenders in Namibië, die Wes- 2

3 Kaap, een van Namibië en ook ʼn hele paar ander. Soos bladsy vier wys is ons tans goed besig met ʼn mooi geografiese verspreiding van aktiewe projekte oor Suid-Afrika en Namibië. Soos julle weet, gee ek my leisels aan die einde van die jaar aan Cobus Snyman oor, waarna ek en Esmé na Namibië vertrek om ons maatskappy daar weer sy volle glorie te laat herleef. Ons vind dit by tye nogal ʼn emosionele ding om ná soveel jare, 20 jaar om presies te wees, van Springbok af weg te trek, maar die opwinding en uitdagings van hierdie geleentheid maak dit vir ons die regte ding, op die regte tyd. Die feit dat ek wéét dat ek in Namibië ʼn tasbare bydrae tot ons almal se voordeel sal kan maak, is vir my ʼn besonders vervullende gedagte. Ek wil vir Cobus en Chantell baie sterkte toewens en verseker hom dat hy en sy senior span my volle vertroue en ondersteuning het. I cannot refrain from mentioning my old colleague, Andrew Ibbotson, whose career has taken a new turn. I wish to thank him for his time as a trusting and supportive colleague with whom we conquered a number of really big challenges. I also wish to thank my bosses on the Board of Directors, together with whom we had to worked through the past few challenging years to keep the ship on the water. I am sure that they will agree that we have now entered calmer waters, waters that will hopefully allow us to achieve our mutual goals and have our expectations of the company fulfilled. Please allow me to again mention Esmé, the wonderful woman who has stood by my side during the past 20 years (and another 10 before that!) in construction and in particular the last 5 or 6 years, when I often had to rely on her support and encouragement, mostly whilst I could not return much of the same. My dank aan haar en ook aan Simon en Heleen, ons twee kinders, wat ongelukkig dikwels sonder al die nodige steun van hul pa hul onderskeie paaie moes loop. Dit is met groot vreugde dat ek kan sê: Alles is goed wat goed eindig. Job Kordom het hierdie boodskap vir ons: Help ons om hierdie Christusfees in die regte gesindheid tegemoet te gaan. Skenk asseblief versoening tussen mens en mens, en God en mens sodat daar waarlik vrede op aarde mag wees. Gee dat die wonder van Christusfees in ons harte sal voortleef wanneer ons in 2016 na ons alledaagse lewe, ons pligte en ons verantwoordelikhede sal terugkeer. Daarom jubel en juig ons omdat ons weet U hou ons, ons gesinne, vriende, familie, ons firma en toekoms in U hande, waar dit behoue sal bly Namens my en Esmé wens ek vir almal ʼn vreugdevolle en geseënde Kerstyd en ʼn besonder voorspoedige nuwe jaar toe. 5 P R O J E C T S HME FILLING STATION, SISHEN Teen die agtergrond van baie moeilike tye en ʼn gebrek aan werk het ons hierdie projek aangepak saam met Murray & Roberts Infrastructure. Die projek met ʼn waarde van ongeveer R was beslis nie ʼn maklike een nie aangesien dit uitdagings soos verlengde on-boarding prosesse, beperkings op toegang asook vele ander moes trotseer. Wel, met dit alles in ag geneem is dit nog ʼn projek waarop ons trots kan wees vanweë ons goeie kwaliteit en ʼn uitmuntende veiligheidsrekord. Kollegas soos Awie van Wyk, Arthur Thomas, Riana Liebenberg, Paul Engelbrecht, Fritz van Gent, Matthys Stone asook die res van die span kan trots wees op nog ʼn suksesvolle projek! Baie geluk ook aan die bestuur met julle sukses! Die groot suksesse van ons as firma hier in Sishen-area is gebou op ons uitstekende verhouding met Kumba as kliënt en ons uithouvermoë onder hoë druk en moeilike tye. Ek doen dus ʼn beroep op elke werknemer in ons maatskappy om met trots elke dag aan te pak en weet dat julle deel maak van ʼn baie groter prentjie as wat die foto s hier gewys. Die werksgeleenthede is min, so wees dankbaar van dag tot dag en sit alles in! Pierre Schreuder 5

6 P R O J E C T S Cape Town Metropolitan Schools The job was awarded to us on 23 July The professional team consists of Iliso Consulting Architects, DPW, Collis & Associates and Goodhope Construction as the main contractor. The contract includes remedial works at two schools, Silversands High School and Garden Village Primary School. The schools were originally built by Vusela who declared bankruptcy before they completed this work. Since then Goodhope was awarded the contract to finish of the schools. Collis & Associates identified design and structural failures. The first floor of the Silversands High building was sagging and seismic protection were not allowed for any of the schools. At Silversands High School any of the works that are being done consist of: Strengthening of 1 st storey floors with a 100 mm 25 MPa/19 mm overlay, Constructing corner columns to support the slab, Strengthening of walls, Structural steelwork to help with support, After strengthening the building, painting and tiling will commence. All the cracks at the nips/pointing also needed to be repaired by the meter on the internally and externally walls. In the Hall 12 of the 16 Columns needed to be strengthened with steel plates for seismic protection. At Garden Village Primary School the corners and the walls were strengthened for seismic protection. Original completion date was the 27 th of November 2015, but acceleration was requested to finish all remedial works by the 6 th. This will allow Goodhope to finish the school in time for opening by the beginning of The job was a good experience, but the cleaning after all the dust, demolishing and water is not a pleasant part of the job. With aesthetic being a big part of the finishing process there was constant communication between the Contractors and the Client for an acceptable product. We would like to thank the Cape Town Team who is putting in the hours to complete the job on time. The job is a learning curve for the team, but we are pushing and we believe we will succeed. We herewith also wish Andrew best of luck in his new company, may he prosper in all the future jobs that he ll be doing. Working with him was such a pleasure. Laverne Seas 6

7 P R O J E C T S Sishen Slimes Dam: wall LEGS 3 & 4 To date my largest earthworks contract consists of the following: construction is split between 2 sections, Legs 3 & 4 that are situated ±2 km from from each other. Clear & Grub m 2 Embankment fill ± m 3 fill (up to 16 m high) Filter construction within the embankment m 3 filter medium (aggregate) enclosed with Bidim (± m 2 ) Subsoil drainage piping ±1000m 300mm dia Spigot & Socket pipeline 840 m The challenges are: 1. The restricted area to work in, taking in mind that haul ramps need to be minimum 1:10 slope and for this we need to have at least 160m to construct the fill up to 16 m height 2. The specification frequency testing for material being used for construction at least 2667 nuclear density testing to be done, 840 sand replacements (one sand replacement takes at least 30 min to complete) and 968 aggregate grading tests. 3. Supply and transport for the filter medium aggregate (19 mm). The only supplier that complies to specification for this material are in Postmasburg about 95 km from site and to get this material to site will take at least 600-loads of side tippers, which also need to drive 7 km from mine access gate to the site. This needs to be done within a 3 month period. At peak we will have 16 units of earthmoving and processing plant and a total of 46 employees on site. Jacob Overbeek MUSINA: Venetia-Span Elke projek het mos maar sy uitdagings, en soos ons BKM-manne ken, pas ons mos orals aan of hoe praat ek nou? Paar weke terug het ek en ʼn klein BKM-span die voertuie se neuse noordoos gedruk op pad na ʼn dorp (ons het diep binne gedink en hoop dis ʼn stad) ±30 km vanaf die Zimbawese en Mosambiekse grense onderskeidelik km later en deur Joburg traffic (nie vir ʼn Namakwalander bedoel nie miskien vir ons taalgebruik, ja) arriveer ons in Musina. Ek sweer dis die hartjie van Suid Afrika as ek moes sê. Ons het sopas 50/50 en Discovery Channel in lewende lywe ervaar. skokbrekers skuld van skrik. Nietemin, soos ek gesê het, pas ons mos ooral aan. Na ʼn paar noue ontkominge met olifante, sebras, kameelperde ensomeer het ons ons voete gevind en is met ope arms deur ʼn wonderlike kliënt ontvang en die verlange na ons half-woestynwêreld vas onmiddellik draaglik gemaak. Ons is tans besig met terreinvestiging en behoort binnekort in volle gang te wees. Hiermee wil die Venetia span ook die hele BKM ʼn geseënde Kersfees toewens en mag ons veilig op die paaie wees na ons bestemmings. 8 P R O J E C T S SKORPION PROJECT: ROSH PINAH Rosh Pinah is ʼn myndorp so 277 km van Okiep. As jy nou van Okiep ry dan is dit op die N7 tot by Vioolsdrif dan oor die rivier tot by Noordoewer-grenspos, daar gaan dit soms swaar maar as jy vir BKM werk, dan ken jy van uitdagings. Nietemin dan trek jy daar weg en draai na Engen se kant en laat waai. Gelukkig is dit nou teer pad tot in Aussenkehr waar jy in nou se tyd net wingerde sien. Dan ry jy sandpad, dit is ʼn gevaarlike pad vir ʼn haastige mens maar jy al teen die rivier af dan tot by Namwater verby, dan ry jy weg van die rivier na Rosh Pinah. Maar daar in die verlate vlaktes kry jy ʼn groot plaas waar daar met lusern geboer word. Dan kry jy diamantmyntjies ook op die pad. Kyk, as jy nou vir Rosh Pinah gesien het, in 1985 soos dit gelyk toe dieselfde Botes & Kennedy die plant gebou het vir Rosh Pinah. Dit was daai tyd bekend as Yskor-myn. Daar was ʼn winkeltjie wat die 155 mense binne 2 ure leeg gekoop het dan moes die eienaar met sy wolfsnor en sy kakie-shorty weer Alexanderbaai toe ry oor die pond om voorraad te gaan koop. Die bottelstoor het die Botes-manne alleen leeg gekoop want alles wat ʼn Botes-man doen, doen hy ordentlik - ek het weereens bewyse. Terug by Rosh Pinah, dit is nou ʼn dorp en intussen het Skorpion-myn ook ontstaan waar ons nou besig is. Dit was ook in die beginjare ʼn myn wat baie streng was, maar dit is ook maar soos ʼn ou man. Dit is so ʼn gevaarlike plek dat jy mag nie met n selfoon, sigarette, lighter, vuurhoutjies of ʼn Motorola-radio daar in, maar ons sny met die cutting torch daar - nogal verwarrend. Nou die settlers is ou goed wat lek en ons breek dit af met ʼn excavator, TLB en tippers dit gaan rof, maar die werk volgens die program is baie dringend en moet klaar. En hier word dag en nag gewerk. Was ons nou Chinese dan het dit so gewerk. As Vince opstaan en werk toe gaan dan het ek net in sy bed gaan lê en so gaan dit aan. Die nagskof is baie lekker. Dit het sy nadeel ook, maar jy het tyd om jou planne te check, jy is rustig. Maar om in die dag te slaap is ʼn probleem. Ek, Ettienne en Melvin werk saam dagskof. Vince, Amateta en Michael is op nagskof, dan het ons vir Jaco en Gerard met ons timekeeper Jogbet, ʼn stoor-vrou het ook ʼn naam gekry soos die res van die firma name het en haar naam is Bollie. By die bund walls is Kobus Mulder, Dirk Emke met Marta Visser betrokke. Derrick Saal 8

9 P E O P L E LABOUR RELATIONS On 22 Oct 2014, a number of employees on Sishen site embarked on an unprotected strike regarding back pay for the gazetted increases in our industry. The minister did not sign the increase agreement before 1 September 2015, and we as the employer had to wait for the increases to be promulgated before implementation. Tensions were high amongst our employees and we were unfortunately required to implement our strike handling procedure. After initial discussions by senior management and employees, a suitable solution could not be agreed upon by the parties and the unprotected strike continued. On 28 Oct 2015, disciplinary hearings were scheduled and attended by members of NUM, Senior management of BKM and workers representatives. Initial proceedings were stop and start and employees representatives wanted to enter into negotiations, despite managements clear instructions that disciplinary hearings would be held. After a stalemate regarding technicalities of procedures, the employer made a proposal to employees representatives and NUM delegates regarding a solution. The proposal was tabled to the striking employees which they duly accepted. The back pay, regardless of the implementation date, would be paid by the employer within 2 days, effective from 1 September Unfortunately, this occurrence led to both parties enduring a lose-lose situation, but valuable lessons were learned and future scenarios could be handled in a much better way. Fortunately, all tensions between the parties ceased and employees were to report back for duty after the long weekend break at the end of October. Mr. Hannes van der Merwe, our CEO wishes to thank everybody who made a contribution towards the eventual albeit painful, peaceful and amicable outcome of this matter. Clyde Cloete Die laaste Werkersverteenwoordiger-vergadering vir 2015 het plaasgevind op Springbok op Vrydag, 13 November Maatskappy-bestuur wil graag die verteenwoordigers bedank vir hul bydrae om die kommunikasie tussen Bestuur en die Werknemers te vergemaklik. Die doel van hierdie vergaderings is om die uitdagings van beide kante af met oop gesprekke vinnig en doeltreffend op te los. Mnr. 10 P E O P L E TOTSIENS AND ARRIVEDERCI I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with BKM. African Concrete first met with Jan Kennedy and Ricardo on the Metrorail bridge repair contract, firstly on Phase 1 and then we also won Phase 2. At that time we understood that BKM and ourselves had a very likeminded approach to our industry and we would make a good fit. Back in 2008 we joined forces officially and the last 7 years have been very satisfying for me. Friends and colleagues will always bump into each other down the line. So it is not goodbye, but from Ansie and myself, as the Italians say arrivederci en tot weersiens. Andrew I think we have all learned from each other and the company went to a new level. There have been some special contracts for me what we did in Sierra Leone was something exceptional, and the Okavango River Bridge at Divundu will always be with me. I have met some outstanding people these last few years. Andre and Jan, the staff and people in BKM who showed hierdie Engelsman the unique character of the Namakwalanders. I will always have a soft spot for Springbok. And I must really thank Hannes for all the support and friendship over this time to myself and Ansie, in some of my darkest days in Sierra Leone he was there for me. Our industry is ever changing, which is a good thing, and I have been offered an opportunity to join a small company and help them grow, something which I feel I must move on to. It is quite ironic that the manager of the Goba Consulting Engineers at the time of our very first Metrorail job together, Phumudzo Baloyi, has started his own construction company which I am now joining. In reality ours is a very small industry, and we will do well to remember that. 10

11 P E O P L E FRIKKIE NEL Frikkie Nel het as ʼn skrynwerker by die firma begin in Hy het homself bekwaam as ʼn voorman en het hom goed van sy taak gekwyt. Hy was een van die staatmakers en het ook ʼn groot aandeel gehad aan die bou van ons maatskappy. Hy was ook ʼn aandeelhouer van BKM. Projekte waarby hy betrokke was, sluit in: 1) Reservoir in Alexanderbaai 2) Reservoir in Komaggas 3) 2 x Reservoirs in Springbok 4) Die Rietfontein-Suid groot diamantaanleg. 5) Die rioolsuiweringswerke te Upington, Dit is maar net ʼn paar van oom Frikkie se suksesvolle strukture wat hy afgehandel het. Hy was ʼn spesialis beton terrein-agent. In die breë Namakwaland staan daar strukture met sy naam op ter nagedagtenis van sy bekwaamheid. Jy hoef nooit agter hom gestaan het nie, hy was ʼn voorloper. Oom Frikkie was baie presies en akkuraat op sy werk. Die manne wat saam met hom gewerk het sal daarvan kan getuig. Hy het ʼn passie vir sy werk gehad. Hy was ʼn goeie mens, kon goed met mense werk. Oom Frikkie was ook baie behulpsaam, betroubaar, lojaal, vriendelik en was ʼn allemansvriend, ʼn omgee mens. Jy kon enige tyd op oom Frikkie se nommer druk, maar jy moes ook maar versigtig trap dat jy nie aan oom Frikkie se verkeerde kant beland het nie, want dan het jy ook onmiddellik geweet waar jy met hom staan. Hy het jou sommer vinnig verduidelik die papier is wit en nie swart. Jan Kennedy en André Botes sal hiervan kan getuig. Eenkeer baie lank gelede op die Komaggasreservoir projek het ʼn man met Frikkie teë gepraat en die man sê toe vir hom terwyl hulle hewig argumenteer: Oom Frikkie ek sal vir jou. Toe word oom Frikkie so boos en vra skreeuend terug: Wie?! JY vir MY!? Sy nagedagtenis sal ons lank onthou. Frikkie se gesondheid na sy aftrede het stelselmatig agteruitgegaan, hy het ʼn lang siekbed gehad. Frikkie is gebore 13 Augustus 1944 en is oorlede 10 Junie Ons treur saam met sy familie oor sy heengaan, ons sal hom nog lank onthou. Ons het ʼn groot vriend verloor. Sonja Carlson TOTSIENS AUBREY Dit is met gemengde gevoelens dat ek hierdie den Heever baie dankie sê vir sy uitstekende brief moet tik. Soos sommige van julle weet, leiding en mentorskap. Ek gaan julle en die het ek ʼn pos by ʼn ander maatskappy aanvaar, maatskappy vreeslik mis. Dit was n groot Bauer Maschinen GmbH. Dit was nie n maklike plesier om saam met julle almal te kon werk. besluit gewees om te neem nie, omdat ek werklik dit geniet het om met almal van julle hier Aubrey Brooks by Botes & Kennedy Manyano te kon werk. Ek wil graag van hierdie geleentheid gebruik om my opregte waardering uit te spreek teenoor my vriende en kollegas saam met wie ek daagliks gewerk het. Ek het ʼn groot deel by elkeen van julle geleer asook ʼn paar tricks of the trade wyser geraak! Ek wil ook graag aan Kalla van 11

12 P E O P L E Mev. sonja carlson Ek is gebore te Komaggas en het my sekondêre opleiding voltooi te S.A. van Wyk Hoërskool, Bergsig, Springbok voltooi. Ek het my tersiêre opleiding voltooi by Ttodds Commercial College, Kaapstad, waar ek n sekretariële kursus gedoen het. Soos n sykous nooit te oud is om te leer nie, het ek ook deeltydse studeer en n Payroll Diploma deur Payroll Education in 2012 verwerf. Ek ploeg terug in my gemeenskap en is tans die Voorsitter van S.A. van Wyk Hoërskool se Beheerliggaam. My heel eerste werk was by Auret & Klass. Ek is nou 26 jaar en 9 maande werksaam by Botes & Kennedy Manyano. Op 31 Julie vanjaar word ek as Uitvoerende Direkteur van die maatskappy aangestel, iets waarop ek baie trots is en hoop om n positiewe bydrae te kan maak. MNR. JAMES STONE Gebore te Springbok en matrikuleer aan die Hoërskool Namakwaland. Studeer daarna aan die Universiteite van Stellenbosch en Kaapstad en kwalifiseer as n geoktrooieerde rekenmeester en geregistreerde ouditeur. Is die medestigter van die Ouditeursfirma Claassen Stone met kantore te Springbok, Calvinia en Vredendal. Dien as ouderling en lid van die dagbestuur van die NG Gemeente Namakwaland op Springbok. MR. ROBERT ABATE The first thing that comes to mind was the 30 year party in Springbok. It was fantastic; a real togetherness of the staff and a good indication of the dedication of B&KM to its staff. My first encounters with B&KM goes back to 1981 when Van Eck & Lurie (bought out by Bateman), the company I was working for, was undertaking a project at Hondeklip Bay. This was the first of all the civil work contracts placed by VEL/Bateman on B&KM for all diamond projects on the West Coast and in Namibia. The last and biggest contract was for Trans Hex at Baken on the Orange river. I retired after spending 35 years with VEL/Bateman and some ± 600 plants later based on the modular concept supplied to all continents in the world. Some 5 years ago I was invited to join the Board of B&KM as an independent director. During my time spent on the Board I always noticed the concern placed on the wellbeing of all staff of the company. I am sure I was considered to be too cautious and possibly negative. Heated discussions always followed by amicable resolutions to the various problems raised. The most important driving force I admired about B&KM was always the desire to complete the projects to the clients complete satisfaction even though they were losing money in very difficult situations. I wish the new board all the best in these changing times in South Africa and in the world. 12

13 T R A I N I N G KALLA VAN DEN HEEVER Ek is ʼn gekwalifiseerde Dieselwerktuigkundige en Onderwyser van beroep. Bestuursvaardighede was in beide hierdie studie-rigtings ʼn belangrike vak, maar met my bevordering binne BKM, het ek besef dat dit nie voldoende is nie en het ek daarom in 2010 by die Universiteit van Stellenbosch se Bestuurskool vir die Senior Bestuurs-ontwikkelings Program (SMDP) ingeskryf.ek het, na voltooiing van die SMDP by verstek gekwalifiseer om ʼn volwaardige B-graad te doen en het ek daarom by die Universiteit van Lincoln in Engeland, met wie die Universiteit van Stellenbosch ʼn samewerkings-ooreenkoms het, vir BA: Hons. (Business Management) ingeskryf. familie, maar ek het my daaraan getroos dat dit die straf is vir my stout wees as jongman toe ek die geleentheid gehad het om te leer en dit nie gedoen het nie. Ek wil net vir Hannes van der Merwe bedank, want baie van take kon ek nie doen as ons nie ʼn onderhoud gevoer het of hy sy insae gelewer het nie. Ook vir sy redigering, want die graad was in Engels gedoen. Ook wil ek my vrou bedank wat baie tikwerk gedoen het en laat nagte vir my tee aangedra het. Kalla van den Heever My studies is in Maart vroeër vanjaar voltooi. Ek het my graad in September tydens die gradeplegtigheid in die 950-jaar oue Lincoln Katedraal in Engeland, iets wat vir my ʼn besonderse voorreg en verrykende ervaring was, ontvang. Wat die studies by beide universiteite besonders gemaak het, is dat al die inhoud gegaan het oor my werk by B&K Plant. Die vier jaar-lange studies was harde werk, het baie self-dissipline geverg en was ontwrigtend vir my The Road To The Red seal After discussing the training centre and the way forward with Hannes van der Merwe in 2011, it was resolved that Kalla van den Heever would take responsibility for my training course. They sent me to Cape Town for my Facilitation Certificate Training in In 2012 I again travelled to Cape Town for my Assessor Certificate Training. Both these certificates I achieved. My first carpentry training started in Springbok, at the work shop from 15 April to 21 May In the same year I returned to Paarl from 8 July to 1 August When I returned from Paarl, Kalla sent me back to Springbok for my first training session with 13 students. Wow! Was I excited! back to Sishen until breaking up! I received my red seal on 14 October 2015, from Northlink College. Any dream or success starts with willingness, commitment, confidence and self-motivation to give training a fair chance of success. Nothing is a waste of time if you set your goals and plans in-line and use your experience wisely. No excuse of age, education, poor families or too fat or too thin! It doesn t matter where you are coming from, all that matters is where you are going! Always remember that the future comes one day at a time. See your career as a set of stepping stones, not a linear path. Job Kordom The next year, 2014, I drove back to Paarl for my Formative Assessment on Carpentry. I completed the course 26 March. I returned to Sishen for the Evaluation of Artisans for Tests from April to July Then on 7 to 9 July I travelled to Belhar Northlink College for my Trade Test, which I passed 100%. From there 13

14 S A F E T Y the Safety Clip Another year has come and gone, and it is with pleasure that I report that our statistics took a turn for the better in 2015 compared to past couple of years. There was however numerous incidents that were preventable, but that unfortunately is in the past and cannot be changed. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Enrico Cloete and his team on being the Safety Champions of It is without a doubt a huge effort that went into their safety management efforts. The 2015 Safety Champions evaluations will commence shortly and a final decision will be made with the financial year-end of 2015/2016, all the best to all the sites has been a year with a lot of changes and probably the biggest in safety was me taking over the Safety Department in January 2015 and implementing a new safety system in August It was a huge challenge and smooth sailing it was not, but as with everything we at B&KM take on, we push through and get it done. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the management for entrusting the huge responsibility on me for running the safety department. I would also like to take this opportunity to send out a huge thank you to my safety department, as it is their continuous hard work and effort in the field that is contributing to the positive trend in the safety statistics. Keep up the good work! Having said we had a good year does not mean we can take our foot off the pedal, as safety is a continuous job and need to be managed at all times, we still have a long way to go and it will only be possible with the collective effort of everybody in the company to improve on our safety performance. To everybody going away for the Festive Season, keep safe and keep out of harm s way, it is not always easy as we enter a time of year where a lot of innocent lives are lost due to the acts of others. 16 P E O P L E Draw near to God and He will draw near to you - James 4:8 It is essential that you give people the opportunity to act on the truth of God. The responsibility must be left with the individual - you cannot act for him. It must be his own deliberate act, but the evangelical message should always lead him to action. Refusing to act leaves a person paralyzed, exactly where he was previously. But once he acts, he is never the same. It is the apparent folly of the truth that stands in the way of hundreds who have been convicted by the Spirit of God. Once I press myself into action, I immediately begin to live. Anything less is merely existing. The moments I truly live are the moments when I act with my entire will. When a truth of God is brought home to your soul, never allow it to pass without acting on it internally in your will, not necessarily externally in your physical life. Record it with ink and with blood work it into your life. The weakest saint who transacts business with Jesus Christ is liberated the second he acts and God s almighty power is available on his behalf. We come up to the truth of God, confess we are wrong, but go back again. Then we approach it again and turn back, until we finally learn we have no business going back. When we are confronted with such a word of truth from our redeeming Lord, we must move directly to transact business with Him. Come to Me (Matthew 11:28). His word come means to act. Yet the last thing we want to do is come. But everyone who does come knows that, at that very moment, the supernatural power of the life of God invades him. The dominating power of the world, the flesh, and the devil is now paralyzed; not by your act, but because your act has joined you to God and tapped you in to His redemptive power.
