ALTERED A W E D D A L 3AlA JWMPOSfO a The Williams House is a two snd one-mf story, High Victorian structure built 5n The house is eclectic in character, having elements of Colonial Revival and Gothic Revival. m The plan is irregular with a combination of hippetl and gabled roofs. On the front (south) and east sides is a curaed cornered porch with coffered ceilings. The parch, is supportd by coupled hascan columns mounted on rusticated piers. On the s'gcond story a pedimented porch is supported by groupd three columns on each front corner. Albove the porch, on the east side is another second story porch with flat roof. On the southwestern corner is a three story turret terminating in a parapet. Centered on the west is a two story apsidal projection. On the north elevation is a two story sleeping porch. The first story of the structure is finished in rusticated stone; the second is brick. The roof has '"eyee" ventilation dormers and is crested. The cornice is bracketkd on the " pedimented dnd' porch- grid.dentile$. elsewhere- Windows are one-over one, or fiked.with cathedral lights or stain.glass transon= almve. Lentils and voussoirs ark stone. The house is finely detailed. bar, and window Lacing axe fluted with elaborate plinth and caner blacks. Basebards are topped with an wee mold. Wainscots are heavily panneled The walls of the music room, as well as the parlor floor are finished in parquet diagonallv. placed and four times the size of "mdern"parpuet flooring. Wansoms in the flat arches between roorrs are either iron work or leaded glass; both are ornate curvilinear patterns. L5ghting fixtures are curvilinear iron pattern or brass and glass fixtures af the period. When the house was originally buili, porch detailing was of the Queen Anne style. Both upper and lower south porches were supported by narrow columns and had "rmn gates" with lattice infill between column and "gate." The upper east porch was absent. The tower (now paxapetted) originally ended i,n a Gothic spire, Stylistically the date of alteration can be. no later than

The home is a significant example of eclectic, late- Victorian architecture and has housed both a well &own Hot Springs physician, Dr. Williams, md a noted lawyer, Ed& Hartley wootton, President of the Arkansas Bar Association in The building presently serves as the office and residence of architect,bernard B. Lieder. Originally designed 5n a high-victorian, 'eclectic style utilizing elements of the 60thic.-~evival and Queen Anne styles, the Dr. ~illiams House was modified shortly after 2e turn of the century to incorporate Colonial-Revival detailing. Outstanding features of 'qpasing dwelling include the parapetted three-story stone tower on the southwest corner, -- rrvinq, classically-detailed porch with coffered ceiling on the south and east elevs-, the second-story prtiea on the south elevation, the apsidal-like projection centered 11.e west elevation and rich wainscoting, ornamental grill and glass work and parquet walls n the building's interior, me first story is composed of rusticated stone; the second ;tory is brick, and detailing is primarily wasden. The construction date of 1891 is imprinted Bn the sidewalk of the house, The large yard is wooded and the surrounding neighbrhood is ~rimarily residential. The original owner of the honse, DrArthur Upton Williak was born' in, Withers Mill, tfosouxi on June 27, arrival in Hot Springs in 1886 coincided with the development ~f the resort as one of the world" premiere health spas; a fact which made Dr. Williams one.f many medical practitioners who established themselves in the city befam the turn of the entur y, Dr, Williams received his m&ica2 training at the Missouri Medical College n St. muis. f ter his graduation in 1878, he was, by merit of competitive examination, appointed assisant physician in the St. Louis City Hospital, At this time he volunteered to work at a uarzinth@ station set up to contain a yellow fevex outbreak in Memphis, n assistant surgeon for the Wabash P, 0. & E, Railroad, He also sewed as n 2886, the year of his move to Rot Springs, he married Elizabeth Birkett wiih whom he ad two children, Mary Mton and Birkett. X Hot Springs, Dr. Williams developed a successa1 medical practice a d gained local recognition for his interes.t An archeology.. n 1917 a acted as a consultant for an archeological expedition near Hot Springs Led by M, R, Harineon of the Bureau of the American ndian, Eeye Foundation, He is mentioned in the book, Caddo Sitesi in Arkansas, witten by Harrington to describe the expodition.

After + receiving his law degree from the University of Maryland and serving as a captain in the 546th Regiment in France during World War, Wootton launched a successful law career in Hot springs. n 1942 he was elected President of the Arkansas Bar Association. Y The current owner of the Dr. WilLiglms House is Bernie Lieder, an architect from Minneapolis, fimesota, whose mrk in Minneapolis includes the fifty-seven story Xnvestors Diversified Services Office Tower, The nternational Dairy Queen, National Car Rental,.Green Giant and Justen's and Gambles Corporate Headquarters buildings. The Dr. Williams House currently serves as the headquarters for Lieaer ' s architectural and real-estate fi,rrns. Lieder is sensitive to the architectural merit of the house and plans its conthud mainten-!% anee. 1
