3 < - BUILDING FORM ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION The Blanchard House is located on a small village lot, #16 on the busy artery of Ayer Road. The house has a small, level front yard while the lot slopes off to the rear. It is one of several houses constructed around the Common in the closing years of the 19th century. The house takes the familiar end house form in the two-and-a-half story size, with a projecting bay on the left lateral wall. On the first floor of the facade, the entry is located in bay one, with a polygonal bay window occupying the remainder of the facade; above in the second story and in the tympanum, paired windows are centered. A turned-spindle, hip-roofed porch covers the front entry and another runs along the right lateral wall. Little other ornament is found on the clapboarded building, except for the cornice that runs across the facade. Attached to the house at the right rear is a two-and-a-half story carriage house, with a wide door on the right of the first floor, a single window above i t on the second floor, and a small centered window in the tympanum above. The building appears to have had few alterations to its exterior since its construction in HISTORICAL NARRATIVE The lot now occupied by the Blanchard House was apparently vacant until this house was constructed for Mr. and Mrs. William Blanchard. Blanchard was a short-term owner of a privilege in the mill district, and is believed to have died before moving into the house. His widow owned the house until 1910 by his widow Diantha Bigelow. Subsequent owners include Susan Davis, Anthony Roche (1936), Weston M. Jenks (1952), Albert S. and Marion Crowninshield, and Dillard (1927).
