The Perfect Pool Owning a Pool If you own a swimming pool already then follow these easy steps to ensure problemfree enjoyment. Test the chemical levels at least twice a week and adjust accordingly. Slow release chlorine tablets are the best way to maintain the chlorine levels safely. If the pool turns green, which can happen due to an algae build up, then a chlorine shock treatment may be necessary. Very often PH levels are ignored and unless regularly reduced a high PH concentration causes a build up of calcium on the pool sides and causes the water to have a dull appearance. Empty the skimmer baskets at least twice a week. Regularly check the state of the baskets. If they are damaged in any way then replace them immediately. Otherwise pool debris can find its way into the pump and this can cause serious problems. Regularly use a net to remove leaves or other debris from the bottom of the pool. This not only makes the pool look much more attractive, it also avoids leaves staining the tiles on the bottom of the pool. Hoover the bottom of the pool at least once a week. Do this slowly and carefully to ensure all small particles are removed from the bottom. Around once a fortnight backwash and rinse the filter to ensure the filter works to its optimum level. It s worth remembering that evaporation in the summer months can cause a substantial drop in water levels but if you think your pool may be losing water then there s a simple test; fill a bucket to three quarters level with pool water. Mark the water level and place the bucket next to the pool and at the same time mark the pool level. Over a week, observe the levels and if they drop by the same distance then everything is in order. If the pool level drops more than the bucket then you may have a leak and you need to call in an expert to deal with the problem. If the level in the bucket drops more than the pool level, then your dog may well be drinking out of the bucket! By carrying out these simple steps you should be able to enjoy your pool without any issues but if you are in any doubt then call in an expert to advise you. Building a Pool If you are considering building a swimming pool then consider these pointers before you have the pool designed and make sure you seek the appropriate permissions. First of all check which way the prevailing wind normally blows. This is very important, ideally your pool should be built with the jets operating in the same direction as the prevailing wind. That way the debris on the surface of the pool will be directed to the skimmer baskets not only by the jets but also by the wind. Secondly install the best pool lights that you can afford. In days gone by pool lights were only white. Now they can be obtained in LED form in multi colours. Indeed they can be set so that they change colour over a short period of time. This can look extremely attractive, soothing especially if you are sitting by the pool in the evenings with a glass of something cool in your hand. If you have a problem, call in a professional. 5 House & Finance From Christian Severinsen at Currencies Direct, written on 8th May. After weeks of uncertainty, the UK s general election last week sent the financial world a spin. Even with just the exit polls hinting at the prospect of a Tory win sent the sterling soaring the next day (Friday 8 May). Furthermore, investors piled into stocks and bonds as it looked likely that the British economy would benefit from a renewed Conservative government. The pound jumped over 5 per cent after prime minister David Cameron took the lead in what was thought to be a deadlocked election, while Britain s leading share index surged two per cent in early trading. After its initial spike, the FTSE-100 pared gains to range around 5 per cent higher. Meanwhile, the FTSE-250 index of smaller companies hit a record high as the prospects of crackdowns on betting firms and taxes on mansions evaporated along with the possibility of a Labour government. With an effective Conservative majority, or Conservative-led coalition now looking like the most likely result, we expect much of the deferred demand from the pre-election period to A POTN Advertorial flow back into the prime market over the remainder of 2015 and 2016, particularly given that the spectre of a mansion tax is now removed from the market, said Lucian Cook, UK head of residential research at Savills. In currency markets, GBP/USD hit three-month highs in the election fervour, however, trimmed gains following worsethan-expected trade data. Cable continues to trade more than one per cent higher on expectations of the Conservatives winning a majority in parliament. EUR/GBP declined as the pound posted solid gains, with the cross retreating over 5 per cent as election results continued to roll in throughout the morning session. UK government bonds also rebounded on the election news. The yield on 10- year gilts declined to around 85 per cent after breaking the two per cent barrier earlier in the week. Bond markets around the world also took a respite from the recent rout. Demand returned to sovereign debt markets as yields now appear to be sufficiently high enough to attract investors. Markets will likely now gain direction from any developments in the negotiations between Greece and its European creditors.
