Here s his advice to find the right balance for your body. Change up your routine: If you are a dedicated weight lifter, explore yoga. Love spinning or running? Try loaded movement or resistance training. It forces adaptation neurologically, which is essential for aging well. Redefine the power lunch: Grabbing something to go? Make sure it s organic and, as much as possible, not packaged or processed. My lunches tend to be 70 percent vegetables/30 percent protein, though I don t eat the same thing every day. I don t want to be bored, and it s important to vary your nutrients. Breathe better: As in, don t hold your breath (you do it more than you think you do). Also: in through the nose, out through the mouth. If you are wearing a heart rate monitor, you ll see a 5-10 BPM drop. I put a drop under the tongue so it can be rapidly absorbed. Buy a nice water bottle: And keep it with you as you go about your day, just as you do your phone. I ve made a habit of filling my bottle as soon as it s empty, as a cue, and I drink 3 to 4 liters a day. Stop multitasking: It s officially not good for you and it makes you less efficient. It also builds amyloid plaques, which are the same type of plaque that clogs the heart. Get some sleep: Seven hours, at a minimum. You can t teach an old dog new tricks, but he ll take to the train more readily if you get him familiar with its sights, sounds and scents early. Get him the puppy version of an It bag. The MTA requires that dogs travel in carriers. Introduce it long before you need it because it can take some getting used to. A weary dog is a more manageable dog. Make it worth his while. Seems like the time is right to start or enhance your collection. We asked an expert for a few pointers. Last request. Rock our world. The island of Manhattan is built atop three types of rock: schist, marble and granite. And in a nod to the local geological history, it is that last one we will use to build the plaza s pavement. This won t be your usual sidewalk. We re setting down varying shades of the gray stone to create a mesmerizing elliptical pattern that can be discerned from the ground but gets more beautiful the higher you go. fun fact! The plants and trees will have their own climate control system. To combat the 150-degree temperatures generated by the rail yards below, cooling water will circulate through underground tubes around the root systems of the Hudson Yards landscaping. 39 77 Hudson Yards You Are Here Now, anyway. But how did that happen? Take a look at the backstory of Hudson Yards The Eastern Yards is marshland, a confluence of several streams. The Western Yards? Still part of the Hudson River. 1830s A chemical works plant is located on 32nd Street near 11th Avenue. To the west is the Hudson River, but the shoreline will soon be filled in The Hudson River Railroad runs a freight train on a track across 33rd Street and down 10th Avenue, which quickly earns the nickname Death Avenue as a result of numerous pedestrian injuries and deaths. Go see the historical plaque on 10th Avenue between 28th and 29th streets. 1860s Cornelius Vanderbilt acquires the Hudson River Railroad, along with several other lines, to create the New York Central Railroad. 1660s The British take over the city from the Dutch, but most everyone continues to live in the area south of Wall Street. The Hudson Yards area? Still river and marsh To combat the danger, the City Council passes a law creating the West Side Cowboys. These human warning signals ride on horseback ahead of the trains, waving red flags by day and lanterns at night A passenger terminal debuts at 30th Street and 10th Avenue with a visit by Abraham Lincoln, who is en route to his inauguration. His funeral train will pass the same site four years later Alexander Cassatt, president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, begins excavation of the first tunnel to connect Manhattan and New Jersey beneath the Hudson River. The first shovel falls in the middle of what will be Hudson Yards Public Square and Gardens. 1950s s New York Central Railroad uses the site as a freight terminal; it eventually falls into disuse London beats out New York to host the 2012 Olympics; plans to develop infrastructure atop the railroad yards for The Games are discontinued Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group break ground on New York s next great neighborhood Tenants move into 10 Hudson Yards, the development s first completed building The elevated High Line opens, connecting the warehouses and factories above the street George Hayde and his horse, Cyclone, take the last ride of the West Side Cowboys, as the final train rolls down 10th Avenue The MTA builds the John D.
