This way you make sure that you will get the transportation on that day. Close your possible Finnish bank account. Leaving from Finland 11 This guide contains information about accommodation in a rental flat in Kemi. For exchange students the accommodation officer Mrs Marja- Leena Jyrkäs will assist in arranging accommodation. The Lapland University of Applied Sciences doesn t have dormitories of its own. In Kemi students can apply for a rental flat. The town authorities of Kemi and the private sector provide flats which are rented out to students. The rental apartments are located within a 2,5 km radius of the educational units. You will be provided with a room in double or three bedroom apartments and will share kitchen, bathroom and shower with one to two students. The flats are furnished. Sometimes also students going for exchange are subletting there apartments to incoming exchange students. 1 DAY BEFORE Clean your apartment before you leave. The landlord will check your apartment and if they have to clean it after you, you must pay the cleaning bill. Follow the house rules and regulations, which in tower blocks are usually placed on the wall in the proximity of the main entrance. Tenancy agreements must be terminated in writing. The property must be vacated within one month of the termination of the tenancy agreement. The landlord can only terminate the tenancy agreement in writing and an acceptable reason must be given. The landlord can evict the tenant if the tenant has not paid the rent for the property or is continuously acting in a socially irresponsible manner. The apartments have been checked by the housing office before the new tenant moves in to the apartment. If there are any problems in the apartments after the tenant has moved in to the apartment, the housing office doesn t cover the possible damages caused by the student. 2. When a new tenant moves in to the apartment, he/she must immediately inform accommodation officer Mr Jukka Ikäläinen about the possible problems in the apartment. 3. When the tenant leaves from the apartment housing office checks the apartment. If there are any damages in the apartment made by tenant he/she is personally responsible for the damage. 4. The house rules must be obeyed. Kitchen 5. The tenant can not do his/her own renovations in the apartment. 6. The tenant can not let anybody else live in his/her apartment. 7. The tenant must clean the apartment regularly. If the housing office has to clean the apartment after the tenant has left, the tenant must pay the cleaning bill. 8. Cancellation time of the contract is one month. If the tenant wants to move away from the apartment, he/she must let the housing office know about it one month before moving out. Living room 9. The housing office can cancel the contract if: * The rent is not paid in time. 4 * Someone else than the tenant is living in the apartment without per mission. * The tenant breaks the house rules. * The apartment is not cleaned regularly. 10. The building is insured by the housing office, but the insure doesn t include the tenants personal property. 6 EXAMPLE OF HOUSE RULES Silence between 22-7 Smoking in the rooms and in the stairways is forbidden. Trashes and other garbage has to be taken to shed of garbage. Garbage is not allowed kept indoors, not in the apartment or in the stairway. When garbage bag is full, it has to be taken to shed of garbage immediatelly. The new law in Finland demands that all households must recycle their garbage! Apartments must be cleaned regularly.if the housing office/landlord has to clean the apartment after the tenant has left, the tenant must pay the cleaning bill. If the occupant has caused damage to the apartment, he/she is liable to compensate fully the damage. Outdoors has to be closed all the time because of the possible electric locks and safety reasons. Cars must be parked at the places reserved for them. It is not allowed to bring the shopping carts from the shops to the apartments!!! Shopping carts are shops property!!! Apartments must be cleaned before moving out/leaving back home and they will be checked by housing office staff/landlord. Keys must be returned personally to the housing office. 7 RECYCLING INFO I M P O R T A N T I N F O R M A T I O N O N A C C O M M O D A T I O N The following waste should be recycled to their own collection bins: Card box Empty, clean and dry Glass Empty glass jars and bottles. Remove lids. REMEMBER! The tenant can not let anybody else live in his/her apartment. If you want to move or change your rental agreement you must inform the landlord or accommmodation officer about it yourself. When you sign the rental agreement you make a commitment to follow the apartment contract rules and house rules. By Finnish law in every apartment has to be a fire alarm. Check that the alarm is in operation. Tenants responsibility is replace the batteries approximate once a year! You can wash your clothes in the laundry room. Remember to make a reservation to use the laundry room beforehand. Metal Metal cans and small items. Plastic Dry and clean It is good house keeping to clean your apartment once a week.. You need to buy cleaning detergents by yourself. 8 R U B B I S H A N D R E C Y C L I N G In spring 2007 the local newspaper wrote about shopping carts in front of the rental houses in Reservikomppaniankatu. The writer was questioning What does the shop think about taking the shopping carts without permission?. So please remember, shopping carts are shop s property! You are not allowed to take the carts with you. L I V I N G I N A S H A R E D A P A R T M E N T Living together with another student could be an experience and provides you many possibilities to learn different cultures. It is also a possibility to make lifetime friendships and can give you lots of good memories of the time you spend here in Finland. Taking care of each other wishes and hopes living together will workout just great! Different manners and different cultures will not create problems if you are willing to be flexible. The regulations for living will guide you and your roommate. Here is also couple of tips for making living more comfortable. Get to know your roommate. Discuss together and make together some basic rules for living, for example visitors, listening music... Cleaning the common areas is every tenant s responsibility (kitchen, hall, toilet, bathroom). One good way is make cleaning turns. After using the kitchen and bathroom always clean after use. For example wash dishware after use. Take care of the garbage also! Respect your roommates property. Because of the healthy reasons the garbage bag has to be taken to shed of garbage immediatelly when it is full. Also it prevents bad smells and makes the apartment more cosy!
