Thursday, March 15 7 a.m. 8:15 a.m. REGISTRATION AND BREAKFAST 8:30 a.m. 10 a.m. CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS A A01. Building the Board You Need The first criterion used for considering a new board member is often known to someone on the current board. But what if it were: totally in love with the mission, instead? In this engaging workshop session, we will examine every step of the board experience and explore succession planning and leadership development from the inside out. Join organizational development and fundraising expert David Allen to consider five fresh ideas for identifying, recruiting, training, and empowering the board you need both now and into the future. (All Levels) David Allen, Partner, Development for Conservation (WI) A02. Citizen Science: Help Your Community Discover the Natural World Citizen science can be a wonderful engagement tool for land trusts, helping the community experience and appreciate the natural world in a hands-on way while contributing to scientific study. In this session, participants will hear both the land trust and academic perspective on citizen science, to take home new ideas for your organization s programming, and to learn the best practices for starting your own program or collaborating with a university initiative. You'll also get the chance to do some hands-on exploring yourself as you try out a citizen science project from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. (All Levels) DeAnna Beasley, Assistant Professor, University of Tennessee (TN) Marissa Hartzler, Southeast Program Manager, Land Trust Alliance Jason Meador, Aquatic Programs Manager, Mainspring Conservation Trust (NC) A03. Best Practices for Working with Large Institutional Landowners Successful conservation efforts require collaboration and engagement across ownership boundaries. Though many land trusts understand this need, examples of successful engagement of large, institutional forestland owners, remain limited. Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Certified Program Participants report hundreds of projects annually that include partnerships with land trusts and conservation organizations. This workshop will feature several examples of successful engagement between land trusts and institutional landowners, and examine some critical factors for success, ranging from appraisal techniques to creative approaches that align with landowner business strategies. Interactive discussion will highlight best practices for building engagement, and expanding capacity of land trust organizations. (Advanced) Paul Trianosky, Chief Conservation Officer, Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc. (TN) Victoria Lockhart, ESG Strategy Manager, Resource Management Service (AL) Andrew Schock, Georgia State Director, The Conservation Fund (GA) Scott Brodbeck, Principal, Legacy Appraisal Services LLC (FL) A04. Taking Opportunities and Overcoming Barriers: Land Trusts' Role in Addressing Climate Change Land trusts have great potential for making their communities more resilient to climate change, through land protection, communication and education, carbon sequestration and more. Join us for presentation and group discussion to explore opportunities for land trusts to address climate change, and barriers to engaging on this issue and how to move past them. Examples from land trusts in the southeast will showcase lessons learned. (All Levels) Caitlin Burke, Associate Director, Conservation Trust for North Carolina (NC) Chris Canfield, Executive Director, Conservation Trust for North Carolina (NC) Rick Huffines, Executive Director, Tennessee River Gorge Trust (TN) Pam Nelson, Program Coordinator, Northwest Arkansas Land Trust (AR) 10 a.m. 10:30 a.m. COFFEE BREAK

10:30 a.m. Noon CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS B B01. When Land Trust Data Growls...How to Growl Back Grappling with your data? Then join us for a look at how The Land Trust for Tennessee organizes and manages data across the organization, including fundraising/development, spatial, and stewardship project information. Each category is uniquely characterized and fulfills a necessary niche within the organization while also playing a critical role in the checks and balances of the data trio. The session focuses primarily on theory and organizational processes but will briefly touch on technical aspects. Databases used by the organization include ArcGIS, Salesforce and LOCATE; however no previous experience with these programs is required to attend this session. Audience discussion and questions welcomed throughout the session. (All Levels) Sharayah Winkler, Director of Member Relations, Land Trust for Tennessee (TN) Luke Iverson, Conservation GIS Manager, Land Trust for Tennessee (TN) Emily Parish, Vice President of Conservation, Land Trust for Tennessee (TN) Mike Szymkowicz, Stewardship Coordinator, Land Trust for Tennessee (TN) B02. Priorities, Planning, and Partnerships: Working with Municipalities This workshop will focus on two urban conservation programs, where municipal and community partnerships play a large role in guiding and funding work. First, hear how the city of Charlotte is combatting tree loss through its new Tree Canopy Preservation Program, using funds collected through commercial development ordinance to acquire and conserve land in partnership with Catawba Lands Conservancy. Similarly, Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association is responding to the challenge of urban stream water quality by working to change local codes and ordinances to promote innovative development and the creation of a City-based storm water retrofit cost-share program. The Association has worked to restore and protect urban stream water quality through green infrastructure and Creek Smart projects, environmental education, advocacy, and local partnerships. All participants will walk away with best practices for working with municipal partners, and ideas for innovative projects for communities of all sizes. (Advanced) Matt Covington, Director of Land Acquisition, Catawba Lands Conservancy (NC) Amanda Byrum, Portfolio Manager, City of Charlotte (NC) Chris Dreps, Executive Director, Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association (NC) Tim Porter, City Arborist, City of Charlotte (NC) B03. Syndication: When it Sounds Too Good to Be True With syndicated tax shelter transactions, the adage applies: when it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. This session will help you understand the principles of due diligence in examining land transactions, particularly conservation easement deals, and how to recognize a potentially less-than-philanthropic intent of donating landowners. Experience has shown that some transactions may be blatantly egregious, but others are less obvious upon examination. Finally, we will discuss the many reasons why these transactions should be avoided and are bad for the land conservation industry as a whole. (All Levels) Laurel Florio, Attorney/Consultant (GA) B04. Climate Resilience for Strategic Conservation Planning Is your land trust ready to incorporate climate in your planning, but don t know where to begin? This panel session will feature land trusts who have all taken different approaches to using climate resilience data to update their strategic conservation planning. Learn about available data, planning strategies, and how a climate lens will help your land protection work. (All Levels) Joel Houser, Southeast Field Coordinator, Open Space Institute (TN) Greg Abernathy, Executive Director, Kentucky Natural Lands Trust (KY) Pam Barber, Land Stewardship Manager, Upstate Forever (SC) Seth Cook, Director of Land Conservation, Pee Dee Land Trust (SC) Noon 12:45 p.m. LUNCH

1 p.m. 2:30 p.m. CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS C C01. You Did a Strategic Plan, What Now? Turn the Plan into Action! Strategic planning is investment of human capital and financial resources that creates a road map for the future, but too often the strategic plan just sits on the shelf. But a dusty strategic plan doesn t provide any ROI or help you stay focused on your big goals! This session is focused on changing how you think about your strategic plan. We will discuss how to integrate the plan into the daily work of the staff and into efforts of the board with annual plans and through activities you are already engaged in but may not be connecting them to your strategic plan. Are you curious about how to communicate about all the progress you are making now that you are actually implementing the plan? We ll talk about dashboards one tool you can use to communicate your progress towards goals. Interactive session with take to use in the office. (All Levels) Sara Wilson, President and Principal Consultant, Mayes, Wilson & Associates, LLC (WI) C02. Fostering Youth Leadership Lookout Mountain Conservancy, in partnership with The Howard School, local parents, foundations and supporters created the Intern and Leadership Program. Nationally recognized, the program uses Lookout Mountain as a classroom to teach critical leadership, academic, social and conservation skills. The Conservancy has also developed three other youth engagement programs, including partnerships with YouthWorks, the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy, and Academy, and the Environmental Connections Program, a 9th grade environmental science experiential opportunity. Learn how LMC designed and started these programs, along with best practices for working with schools and young adults. Participants will hear directly from interns on the impacts these programs have had on their lives. (All Levels) Robyn Carlton, CEO, Lookout Mountain Conservancy (TN) Interns from the Howard School C03. Leaning on a Loan Buying conservation land is complicated. Rarely does a landowner s timetable align with available funding from private and public sources. Land trusts are more frequently tapping into bridge financing to avoid important conservation land slipping through their fingers. Reggie Hall, Director of Conservation Loans at The Conservation Fund will moderate this session by highlighting acquisitions where land trusts collaborated with this loan program. When is a property so remarkable that it warrants taking on a loan? Learn how to access low-cost capital, manage risk, and act quickly before losing critical land to development. (Advanced) Reggie Hall, Director, Conservation Loans, The Conservation Fund (NH) Janice Allen, Deputy Director, North Carolina Coastal Land Trust (NC) Brian Krebs, Board Chair, Southeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc. (TN) Libba Vaughan, Executive Director, Freshwater Land Trust (AL) C04. Tools to Help Apply a Climate Lens to Land Protection and Management In this session, we will explore climate tools that were designed to help land managers in coastal areas consider the impacts of climate change, but also have applicability for changing upland landscapes as well. Participants will learn how to use the Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Tool for Coastal Habitats, a tool created to help land managers develop conservation, management, and restoration strategies to proactively respond to the effects of climate change on protected lands. We will also examine migrating shorelines easements and how one land trust is conserving property at the edge of a changing land and water interface. (Advanced) Kelly Watkinson, Land and Climate Program Manager, Land Trust Alliance (VA) Thomas Ankersen, Director of the Conservation Clinic, University of Florida Levin College of Law (FL) Justin Caron, Staff Attorney, Alachua Conservation Trust (FL) Jennifer Plunket, Stewardship Coordinator, North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (SC) Hope Sutton, Stewardship Coordinator and Southern Sites Manager, North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve (NC) 2:30 p.m. 3 p.m. COFFEE BREAK

3 p.m. 4 p.m. HUMBLE PIE: REINTERPRETING FAILURE Every day we show up. We are asked to put our best selves forward. We communicate, we strategize and we implement, often with partners. Every so often, despite our best intentions, things go wrong and suddenly, we are in the hot seat. Sometimes, the inevitability of things beyond our control turns into a situation we have an obligation to respond to. Listen to a storytelling events starring conservation professionals, bravely agreeing to reveal a personal circumstance from when their work life and/or relationships were in crisis. Hear how the bottom dropped out for these professionals, what their crisis revealed, and how they absorbed the lessons and walked away stronger. Storytelling will be facilitated by Heidi Hannapel, co-founder of Landmatters, a multidisciplinary consulting firm committed to healthy communities in sustainable landscapes. Rob Aldrich, Director of Community Conservation, Community Conservation, The Land Trust Alliance (DC) Mary Alice Holley, Communications and Marketing Director, Conservation Trust for North Carolina (NC) Shannon Lee, Urban Conservation Manager, The Conservation Fund (GA) Paul Trianosky, Chief Conservation Officer, Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc. (TN) 4 p.m. 6 p.m. FREE TIME Free time to engage, explore or exercise DINNER ON OWN 6 p.m. 8 p.m. OPTIONAL DINNER AT THE CAMP HOUSE Continue conversations with your friends and colleagues and join us for a casual meal of heavy hors d'oeuvres and shared plates at The Camp House. Space will be limited, pre-registration and additional fee required. Friday, March 16 7:30 a.m. 8:15 a.m. BREAKFAST Connect with your southeast colleagues for lively topic table discussions, featuring community conservation, stewardship, climate, conservation defense and more. Be sure to take advantage of this special time to share your stories about conservation and learn from your peers. 8:30 a.m. 10 a.m. CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS D D01. When Working Together Works We ve all heard that we re stronger together than apart, but what does that mean in practice for conservation organizations? Many have worked together on land protection projects, but is there room for other forms of strategic collaboration to make our organizations stronger? In this session, we will discuss how land trusts in the Southeast are successfully working together, ranging from multi-organization collaborations where each has its own unique niche, all the way to merging organizations for greater conservation impact and permanence. Take back ideas for how your land trust can work with others to help support everyone s collective missions. (All Levels) Erin Heskett, Director of National and Regional Services, Land Trust Alliance (MI) Robyn Carlton, CEO, Lookout Mountain Conservancy (TN) Rick Huffines, Executive Director, Tennessee River Gorge Trust (TN) Rebecca Kemp, Board Member, Conserving Carolina (NC) Mike Pollock, Executive Director, Lula Lake Land Trust (GA) Kieran Roe, Executive Director, Conserving Carolina (NC)

D02. Working With Farmlink Programs on Farmland Preservation and Land Access Opportunities in the Southeast Gaining access to affordable agricultural land is one of the biggest challenges faced by both new and established farmers. Hear from Southeastern Farmlink program representatives and land trust staff as they share insights and experiences in helping farmers identify and access affordable farmland. Panelists will discuss how Farmlink programs can work with land trusts to achieve this outcome and keep conserved farmland in production. Speakers will highlight existing resources, as well as emerging programs and policies to promote farmland preservation and make conserved farmland more affordable to the next generation of farmers. (Advanced) Suzanna Denison, Director, WNC FarmLink (NC) Amy Davis, Appalachian Resource Conservation and Development Council, TN FarmLink (TN) Edgar Miller, Government Relations Director, Conservation Trust for North Carolina (NC) Sara Posey, Hiwassee Programs Manager, Mainspring Conservation Trust (NC) D03. Conservation Technology Gallery There are many tools out there for making our land protection and stewardship work easier so many that it can be difficult to know which direction to take! In this session, we ll have presenters from land trusts and partners sharing the tools they use in their work, allowing you to try them out and ask questions in an informal, expo type format. From apps to record monitoring visits, to methods for managing access, to online data exploration tools to help prioritize your work, we ve got it all covered! (All Levels) Ray Knott, Executive Director, Southeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc. (TN) Jeffrey Drummond, Jr., Director of Stewardship Programs, Freshwater Land Trust (AL) Luke Iverson, Conservation GIS Manager, Land Trust for Tennessee (TN) Torry Nergart, Stewardship Manager, Conserving Carolina (NC) D04. Cultivating Legislative Champions with Content Marketing A sound communications strategy can help your team develop relationships with lawmakers and elected officials to gain support for your organization s legislative goals. Members of Conservation Trust for North Carolina and North Carolina s Land for Tomorrow lobbying coalition will showcase how they use content marketing and media relations strategies to build public awareness for the state s conservation issues and policies, and cultivate partnerships with local, state, and federal government officials. The session will show attendees how to build a legislative media strategy, re-purpose content across a variety of mediums, and use effective communications to achieve public awareness and legislative goals. (Advanced) Mary Alice Holley, Communications and Marketing Director, Conservation Trust for North Carolina (NC) Matt Covington, Director of Land Acquisition, Catawba Lands Conservancy (NC) 10 a.m. 10:30 a.m. COFFEE BREAK 10:30 a.m. Noon CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS E E01. Succession Planning for Stability and Sustainability Many land trusts are not prepared for what is truly inevitable a passing of the guard. As the old saying goes stuff happens and often when you least expect it. Will you be prepared? Have you got a new generation of leaders ready to step up when your current leadership steps away? If a key leader was lost, would you be scrambling? Succession planning provides stability when leadership is lost unexpectedly and contributes to the sustainability of your organization in perpetuity. It ensures a transfer of critical knowledge and organizational history and in doing so, protects the legacy of current leaders. In this session, we ll unpack planning - discuss why succession planning is so important for any land trust, explore different types of succession one needs to plan for, and offer a variety of planning models to keep your organization moving smartly forward - whatever the circumstances. We ll also hear and learn from the experiences of The Land Trust for Tennessee who successfully worked through a number of major leadership transitions. (All Levels) Nancy Moore, Managing Partner, Conservation Consulting Group (WI) Emily Parish, Vice President of Conservation, Land Trust for Tennessee (TN)

E02. Taking a Tactical Approach to Collaborative Conservation Through this session learn how a national and regional land trust leverage each other s resources and skills while managing risk and achieving the conservation goals of the landowner, land trust, and military. The session will introduce participants to the conservation goals, challenges, and operating structure of this value-added partnership between The Conservation Fund s Working Forest Fund program, the Georgia-Alabama Land Trust, and the Army. The second half of the session provides participants with the opportunity to interact with the presenters to consider alternative (non-dod) applications of this partnership model to conserve forestland in the southeast. (All Levels) Bethany Olmstead, Conservation Manager, The Conservation Fund (NC) Trevor Cutsinger, Business Manager, The Conservation Fund (NC) Hal Robinson, Army Compatible Use Buffer (ACUB) Program Director, Georgia Alabama Land Trust (AL) E03. Rethinking the Invasion: Approaches and Alternatives to Fighting Non-Native Species Land managers have collectively spent millions of hours and dollars trying to combat non-native invasive species. In some cases, those efforts have restored important habitat that benefit a wide range of wildlife and plant species. In other instances, the efforts to eradicate invasive species are ongoing with no end in sight. In still other cases, critics may argue that the efforts to combat a non-native species causes more harm to the local environment than the species of concern. This workshop will look at several different invasive species relevant to the southeast, and how people try to control them. We will look at why these species are deemed to be a problem, why they are adapted to the niche they are in, the tactics to eliminate or control them, and also alternatives to eradication measures. The workshop will include a lot of participation from attendees, with discussions that identify species of concern and control methods that have succeeded and failed. (All Levels) Ben Miles, Conservation Consultant, Shire Environmental (KY) E04. Wild Ideas: Using Events and Partnerships to Communicate Conservation Land conservation has widespread community benefits that reach nearly every strata of society, so why are so many people missing the message? Events are opportunities to interface with your community and remind them of your organization s role as a community fixture, committed to improving lives through conservation in perpetuity. Public events also present perfect platforms to demonstrate and implement your commitment to diversifying and expanding your audience. Bring the benefits of land conservation to life with events that take your work to new audiences in energetic and informative formats. Learn how two land trusts are creatively reaching out to people of all generations to communicate the message of conservation with music, rapid fire presentations, and partnerships and how their methods could work for your land trust. In this session, we will walk through two event styles that have effectively broadened the reach of these land trusts in their communities and emphasize the replicable aspects of each along with the tools that make them work. (All Levels) Margaret Sands, Membership and Community Outreach Coordinator, Triangle Land Conservancy (NC) Lynne Dardanell, Communications and Outreach Manager, Piedmont Land Conservancy (NC) Noon CONFERENCE ADJOURNS Lunch provided
