2 President s Greeting Dear Fellow Women s Institute Members, I hope you have all enjoyed this fall s special PEIWI events I certainly did. As I take a break from making pickles on this lovely fall day it is difficult to imagine when you ladies read this message winter will be here winter seems so far away right now. PEIWI, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Farm Centre, will once again host a New Year s Levee. Come out and celebrate the New Year by meeting old friends and making new ones. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in creating the two PEIWI signature quilts - they are beautiful. We hope to have them on display during the Levee. Once you see these lovely quilts I am sure you will all be inspired to go ahead and make a quilt of your own. The super early bird registration for the FWIC Triennial Convention is January 15, The convention is from June 9 13, 2015 in Frederiction, NB. More information is available at You can attend for the entire convention or for a day. Load up your car and head to NB for a great time. May you all have a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for a terrific Cynthia Mitchell President PEIWI Life Membership The Women of Confederation Video Launch PEIWI Provincial Secretary Myrna Murray presents a Life Membership to Marina Campbell of Central Bedeque WI on June 9 at the Dream Away Café in Central Bedeque. JoDee Samuelson introduces the The Women of Confederation video at City Cinema on July 13.
3 PEI Executive Officer to FWIC News from FWIC My term with the National Board has been busy and exciting, but our Triennium is soon coming to an end! The Executive had the privilege of attending the International Peace Garden for our final meetings in late October before Convention 2015 rolls around. The Registration Packages are now available thanks to our host province of New Brunswick. Our job now is to prepare the displays needed for the Fredericton Convention Centre, carry out the business sessions, and ensure the meetings are informative and productive. The event is shaping up to be an enjoyable one, so please consider attending when it is being held in the Maritimes. There are two early bird registrations so make your decision early. The tours and workshops look very interesting and registration forms are also available for spouses or companions. The Federated Women s Institutes of Canada provides a valuable link between the branches, the provincial organizations, and our international organization, all working for the benefit of women, families, and communities. Like all organizations, we need funds to meet our operating costs. As we are reluctant to raise dues, we have devised Willy the Worm as a fun way for members to gather coins to feed Willy, and have chosen a lovely serviceable Messenger Bag as a sales item to fill our coffers. Any contribution you are able to make during this Triennium would be greatly appreciated! When making a favourite aunt s recipe for carrot cake, I found this tip: To test for doneness, use a spaghetti strand. It should come out fairly dry if the cake is done. Carol MacLellan, FWIC Executive Officer Convener Report As Cultural Activities Convener I presented the WI prize at the PEI Kiwanis Music Festival, as well I was a judge and presented an award at the Provincial Heritage Fair at The Confederation Centre of the Arts. Our biggest project this year was the 2014 Signature Quilt. We are very fortunate to have so much help from the WI branches in getting the signatures of their members on the squares and getting them back to us, so we could get the quilts together and ready for quilting at Old Home Week. We had a wonderful response from WI members as well as the general public, with many ladies doing numerous hours of quilting, resulting in the quilting being all completed by the end of the Provincial Exhibition. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way, with quilting, sewing, etc. All branches are reminded that we have a variety of convener kits and videos available online and from the office. Evelyn Ford, Cultural Activities Convener

7 WI 2014 Signature Quilt In an age where a century old organization is rumored to be nothing but "jam and quilts", this Executive Director of PEI Woman's Institute was skeptical and against the notion of the creation of a traditional quilt, even if it was to celebrate PEI's coveted 150 Anniversary of the Birthplace of Confederation. Funding was not factored, nor applied for and volunteers and branches of the day proved something startling. When the concept was born approximately 90 branches, comprised of over 1,200 members, were sent the donated 12 square cloth, with just the right traditional red embroidery colour. It was a gamble. Would the request be accepted by these busy branches spread across PEI and would they be receptive to the short notice and deadlines? And is this a slurred message we want out there, when an organization is capable of reinventing itself but does require to keep an eye on ensuring membership growth by being current? Yes, indeed, and number 321 of a specific embroidery floss company was to be used - not the colorful vintage nor modern colors of today - and I grew even more concerned. The history of signature quilts on PEI, and elsewhere, comes from fundraisers sometimes for those who have lost homes due to fires, or in capturing community events of the day. Today signature quilts have evolved into modern day interior decorative statements. As the Signature Quilts developed, branches were slowly sending their squares in - and in simply describing the project, it was to simply sign your name in pencil, and embroider over the signature scribble. But what happened in the spring and summer of 2014 with PEIWI's quilt project? Beautiful art pieces began to show up - there was the charming, unique, traditional, artistic squares with the fresh clear signature of those in their twenties, next to the wisdom filled signatures from their 90 plus years in their communities. There were branches stating they did not know this lost and dwindling art, and those squares depicted the finery of today's machines simulating professional printing that a hockey team would wear proudly on their jackets. There were also those squares gloriously illustrating the sewing skill of an angel. Participation was outstanding on the two quilts. They combined tradition, ingenuity and teamwork in a slight modern day twist in action. The quilts were on display in an interactive add-a-stitch demonstration during Old Home Week and a log book was signed by those who took part of stitching history. It was brilliant. I was wrong. I'm happily OK with being incorrect and proud to play a role in this outstanding organization we call Women's Institute who are far more than quilts and jams - and they can do that too. Watch for details on the continued legacy and use of these quilts. Ellen MacPhail, Executive Director, PEIWI L-R: Margaret MacKinley, Frances Coles, Leila Vickerson and Annie Boyle.
