1 falllineartistguild.org Letter FLAG s New Member Shirley Chapman & Lyle Lansdell Have you seen FLAG s newest member working his magic along the streets of Sandersville? Lyle Lansdell spotted him first and brought him as her guest to FLAG s last bimonthly meeting. Ricky Reeves shared two of his paintings with those attending the meeting, and we were impressed with his large colorful pictures of local homes. He joined FLAG that night and participated in FLAG s Gallery opening on May 5th. Those same two paintings are presently on display on the counter in the Gallery s meeting room. Since then Ricky has been very busy working on commission for several of the city s residents. He completed a charming painting of the Old County Jail. He moved on to Gina Wiggin s house on North Harris Street, setting up his large easel across the street, Ricky Reeves painting freehand without the use of rulers and such; just a brush and acrylics. Gina s neighbor then wanted a painting of her house. So he crossed the street and set up his equipment in Gina s yard to get a good view of the neighbor s house. Later he was spotted on East McCarty Street working on yet another painting. Ricky was born in Sandersville and went to Sandersville Elementary and T.J. Elder Middle School. During the ninth grade he moved to Jersey City, New Jersey, where he took art classes at Lincoln High School. Then at Montclair State College, he also took painting classes. Ricky improvises many of his methods. On a short budget, he fashioned his own easel and stretches fabric over used frames to use as canvases. He uses whatever paints he can find, including house paint. His approach is innovative and folksy. The outcome is a delightful, colorful effect, and his trees are particularly beautiful. To quote Ricky, Whatever gift God has given us, we have to put it to work. Ricky praises his 99 year old grandmother Texanne Reeves, a natural artist, and his mother Susie Arthur, a talented decorator, saying he feels his love of painting and any talent he might have has been passed down through them. Ricky s paintings have certainly become very desirable. Keep your eyes open as you travel about town, and see if you spot him working on his next masterpiece! Warthen Operations Center. Ida began taking photos when she was 13 and as a young teenager, joined a small photography club in Thomson. She earned a BS in Nursing in 1999 and has worked full time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Augusta University's Children's Hospital of Georgia since Peggy and Ida Blackstone graduation. Ida s interest in photography has evolved to include nature, children, engagements, weddings, and families. Ida also uses a portable indoor studio in her photography. Ida began taking photos with a Pentax K1000 (manual film camera). In 2005 she bought her first digital camera (Nikon D40X). The last few years, Ida has done more in nature photography than people photography. Her favorite subject to photograph is a dragonfly. Although Ida has many years of practice in photography, it has stayed mostly as a hobby or an asset to (Continued on page 4) Cinco de Mayo Party & Ribbon Cutting On May 5th the Fall Line Artist Guild celebrated the opening of their gallery and studio with a ribbon cutting and a festive al fresco Cinco de Mayo party. The ribbon cutting, which FLAG was pleased to share with local artist Elaine Burge and her new studio, was very well Courtesy the Sandersville Progress attended by members of FLAG and members of the FLAG President Shirley Chapman cuts the ribbon for the Gallery in Sandersville community. Attendees enjoyed seeing the new FLAG sign designed by Bryant Jordan, the recently purchased hanging system and the work of Flag members in the art exhibit. In addition Elaine s art work was on display in her attractive new studio. Plans for the revitalization of Jernigan Street by Mary Charles Howard were also on display. FLAG would like to thank The Washington County Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the ribbon cutting, The Geo. D. Warthen Bank and Maricela s Mexican Grill for the excellent food and drink and Billy Wiggins for assisting in getting the new gallery ready.

3 C h i h u l y i n t h e G a r d e n Tr i p On May 28th, several FLAG members and guests took advantage of a FLAG trip to the Atlanta Botanical Garden to view the Chihuly in the Garden exhibit. In addition to touring the gardens, the group enjoyed lunch at the Garden s new restaurant, Linton s. The exhibit featured the work of internationally known glass artist, Dale Chihuly. Set in the Garden s lush botanical setting, Chihuly s glass sculptures provided bright spots of color that often mimicked exotic plants or were the center pieces for fountains and formal gardens. The exhibit will run through December and is worth a trip to Atlanta. We encourage all to be present to endorse and support our new officers. The nominating committee is excited about our new board. The committee was Shirley Chapman; chair, Anne Jones, Lyle Landsdell, and Georgia Raiford. Bylaws In the past two months, FLAG has publicized proposed changes to its bylaws and asked members to vote electronically or by paper ballot at our May meeting. The proposed changes passed with the required number of votes. The revised bylaws can be viewed on the FLAG website: falllineartistguild.org/officers and board and click the FLAG Bylaws button. Peggy makes her home with her husband, William and daughter, Ida in Mitchell, Georgia. Peggy enjoys art in many forms and has been active in most of them. Her interests have included quilting, crochet, sewing, oil painting, acrylic painting, ceramics (from pouring to finished product), card crafting, and knitting with a knitting machine. After realizing the intricate beauty of tatting, she had her Aunt to teach her how to tat. Since then she has written several patterns, developed her own line of cards (Greetings to Bless You), and teaches tatting. She also does commission work as time permits. In addition to our program, the Nominating Committee will present the slate of officers for vote by the active membership.
