photo: afgh Pavilion Seefeldquai Zurich This take on the classic glass pavilion is no demonstration model for a transparent utopia, nor is it an attempt to 'frame' the natural surroundings It is a less formal design for a kiosk in the park beside Riesbach Harbour in Zürich The take-away restaurant, with seating for 35, is contained within a glass object that is in keeping with a series of sculptures in the park The polygonal shape, the transparency and lightness of the material, and the various tints of the colored films on the glass, ensure that, depending on the time of day, this object stands out from or merges with its surroundings On a less prosaic note, another reason for choosing glass was the fact that graffiti and dirt can be easily removed photo: afgh Project is public! 7 photo: Hannes Henz photo: Hannes Henz Extension of Kino Xenix Kanzleistrasse Zurich In 1904, several temporary wooden pavilions were erected in Zurich in order to respond to the rising demand for classrooms In 1984, one of these 'temporary' structures was conquered by a group of young film enthusiasts who wanted to set-up an alternative cinema The schoolrooms became the auditorium and the corridor served as a bar In order to achieve a more efficient, more flexible, and more user-friendly building, we were asked to redesign every single corner inside the existing structure and to project an extension The result is a seamless new whole of old and newthe bar, for example, is one continuous space consisting of two halves from 1904 and 2007 This effect is achieved by a continuation of the existing ceiling, including replicas of the old beams, as well as the mimetic materialization of the extension The strategy of unification is used on the exterior as well: The roof of the extension is stretched over parts of the existing building in order to fuse old and new photo: Hannes Henz Project is public! 9 photo: Beat Bühler photo: Beat Bühler Albisriederhaus Conversion Albisrieder-Strasse Zurich en/sozialzentrum_albisriederhaushtml After winning the design competition, huggen_berger converted the Albisriederhaus, which had been a community centre since 1934, into a regional social welfare centre with offices and consulting rooms The refurbished façades do not immediately reveal the fundamental changes that have taken place behind them The glass façade was reopened and the articulation of the main part of the building, with its striking concrete buttresses, was emphasized with colour The main problem was the transformation of the large hall into two low-ceilinged office floors The architects' solution was to site an access corridor along one side, emulating the height of the former hall - the false ceiling ending here in the form of a gallery What distinguishes this conversion is the undogmatic ease with which the architects have assimilated the old building and transformed it into something new - obscuring the chronology and abandoning the prevailing diktat of contrast between the old and the new photo: Beat Bühler Project is public! 2004 huggen berger City Council of Zurich Axel_Simon Monday - Friday , tel:

photo: Georg Gisel photo: Georg Gisel Im Birch School Margrit-Rainer-Strasse Zurich Peter Märkli demonstrates that 'big' does not necessarily mean 'anonymous' but can also stand for 'dense' With a length of 250 metres, this school in Zurich is quite a hunk Even so, it fits into the scale of the former industrial district and can be taken in at a glance Two four-storey volumes, slightly staggered, face each other The third volume contains the gym, one of the biggest in town Despite the stateliness and severity, there is never a feeling of monumentality This comes from the scale of the building's volumes, for Märkli is a master of proportion; the vertical texture of the concrete articulates all of the façades, and the uppermost strip, forming the edge of the roof, recedes slightly This prevents the corners of the building from appearing apart from the top Märkli applies this knowledge completely naturally, even though it is no longer familiar today The slight shifts that distinguish his work therefore keep being seen as a lack of precision photo: Georg Gisel Public access unknown! 2004 Project manager Associate architect Artist Project manager Landscape designer Peter Märkli Christof Ansorge Gody Kühnis Hans Josephsohn Jakob Frischknecht Zulauf Seippel Schweingruber City of Zurich Axel_Simon 11

photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Stadelhofen Station Stadelhoferstrasse 8001 Zurich Stadelhofen Train Station, built in the early 1980s, is a major transportation junction for the Zurich area The original design consisted of a 300 metres long terminal building, running along a curved railway line, which itself runs along a hillside in the town's centre In 1990, Santiago Calatrava received the assignment to add a new third track to the existing train station In order to accomplish this, his design envolved excavating part of the hillside to add the track, only to restore the hillside in part on top of the new structure This way the new track has an open, naturally lit platform, while above ground space was created for walkways photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! 1984 Santiago Calatrava HelleBeelden Depending on departure times Swiss Railways operates regional train services through Stadelhofen However, the station is only for regional lines, and is not the main station in Zurich You can reach it from the main station in about minutes by tram (No 11, going south) 13
photo: Ferit Kuyas photo: Camenzind Evolution Collective Housing at Zurich Seefeldstrasse Zurich This project, also called Seewurfel, proposes a possible alternative to individual luxury homes, which traditionally take up large amounts of space with a very low population density In this case, the low population density, with a maximum of two housing units per building, is complemented by a programme of offices on the lower floors, which generates activity in the area during the day, in spite of they do not affect to the density parameter The private garden that characterises the nearby villas becomes a series of public plazas which help to create interaction between those who use them The other main aspect of luxury homes, individuality, is achieved by creating differences in the built volumes as well as in common areas using varied materials and finishes photo: Reinhard Zimmermann Project is not public! 21 Forsterstrasse Apartments Forsterstrasse Zurich This project is spread over five levels The lowest is a column-free, underground car park, accessed directly off the street Above this is a partially buried entrance and service floor Finally there are three levels of apartments The lower two levels - 3 & 4 - are handed versions of each other and have two units each, whilst the smaller top floor has only one Internally, the planning is reminiscent of Mies' brick wall houses, with a series of orthogonal perpendicular walls defining individual spaces which flow from one to the next The perimeter of the building is column-free and totally glazed to maximise light and views The floor slabs cantilever out on the Forsterstrasse elevation to help combat solar gain Walls and floors are exposed reinforced concrete, and disguise very clever and subtle methods of load transference As with the Single Wall House, this initially simple building rewards study, and reveals itself to be both spatially and structurally sophisticated Project is not public! 2003 Project manager Landscape designer Structural engineer Christian Kerez Archobau Catherine Dumont d'ayot, Lucas Schweingruber, Christian Kerez Oberageri - Joseph Schwartz davidb Take the number 6 tram to Toblerplatz From here walk up the hill (north) and turn left into Freudenbergasse and then turn immediately right into Mittelbergsteig This is impassible to cars and motocycles At the top of Mittelbergsteig turn right onto Forsterstrasse and the project is approximately 40m along on the opposite side of the road 21
Single Wall House Burenweg Zurich Outwardly simple, this project is, in fact, rather sophisticated, both structurally and spatially On a small and narrow plot, overlooking the heart of Zurich, the architect has built a structure containing two houses Instead of sitting them one above the other, or in tandem, the volume has been split vertically and longitudinally, so that each dwelling can take equal advantage of the views The parting wall zig-zags and follows a different line on each of the three floors This stabilizes it transversely and maximises the variety of spaces, which flow from floor to floor via open stair flights The wall is formed in reinforced concrete as is each floor plate, which is cantilevered from it, so that there are no perimeter columns to obstruct the views The above ground external walls are completely glazed; some sections can be slid open for ventilation External roller blinds located along the edge of the floor slabs can be lowered to control solar gain and help with privacy Project is not public! 2007 Project manager Structural engineer Christian Kerez BGS & Partner Architekten AG Dr Schwartz Consulting AG davidb Take the number 11 tram to Burgweiss and the Tram Museum From here turn east into Wasserstrasse (this road is very steep) At the first crossroads, turn right into Eierbrechtstrasse Follow this road until it turns left and becomes Burenweg The project is at the end of the turn at the junction with Hirtenweg 22
Careum Centre Gloriastrasse Zurich The Careum Centre is operated by the Careum Foundation, which was established in 1880 as an organization for promoting healthcare training In 2005, the Canton of Zurich granted the Foundation permission to build the new centre in the heart of the university and hospital district As part of the agreement, a number of dwellings had to be included The new centre consists of five buildings - three of which are residential - grouped around a series of courts All five are treated in a similar fashion architecturally A brindled red brick, laid conventionally, has been used in horizontal bands at each floor slab level In between these bands are horizontal ribbon windows In places the windows are concealed behind perforated screens of rusticated brickwork Where there are no windows, the same screening brickwork has been used, but without any kind of transparency The whole effect is simple, refined and understated Public access unknown! 2007 GWJ Architekten davidb The Careum Centre is next to the Platte tram stop on lines 5 &
Stadion Letzigrund Badenerstrasse Zurich This stadium is home to FC Zurich and was used for three matches in the Euro 2008 tournament To avoid dwarfing its surroundings, this massive structure was sunk into the ground The excavated material was sifted on site to extract the local gravel, which was then used in the concrete The most remarkable feature of the stadium is the sweeping roof It is held aloft by 31 pairs of raked columns (formed with Corten or rusting steel) such that it almost seems to float The soffit of the roof is clad with timber slats Sheets of Corten are also used to form the perimeter fence The capacity is for football matches, for athletics and for concerts Project is public! 25 Dynamo Metal Workshop Wasserwerkstrasse Zurich Dynamo is a cultural organisation, based in Zurich and aimed at young people It offers classes and workshops in a diverse range of subjects such as music, dance, theatre, graphics, photography, sculpture and textiles It now boasts this metal workshop designed by Phalt In spite of the address on Wasserwerkestrasse, the building sits down from the road on the Limmat waterfront, where the Drahtschmidlisteg bridge meets Neumuhle-Quai Thanks to Dynamo this area serves as a popular meeting place for young people The building is very simple A distorted rectactangle in plan contains a small office/workshop and a secure store The roof cantilevers out several metres all around to provide additional covered work space The entire building (apart from the roof) is clad in galvanised steel flooring plate This has been punched with numerous little circular cut-outs reminiscent of moon craters This gives the building a very utilitarian air, with a highly textured yet transparent surface Project is public! 2008 Phalt City of Zurich davidb The project can be reached on foot: travel north from the Schweiz Museum (on the north side of the Hauptbahnhof) At the end of the park, cross the footbridge over the river Alternatively take a number 14 tram (direction Seebach) or a number 11 tram (direction Auzeig) Alight two stops after the Hauptbahnhof at Beckenhof and make your way on foot to the riverside 25
Obsidian Hohlstrasse Zurich This project sits on a small plot, sandwiched between a main rail route and the residential area south of Hohlstrasse It is one of numerous new commercial developments recently built on this thin sliver of land For an office building, it is a new take on the classic slab and podium model Here, B&E spring the tower slab from one side of the podium rather than striking it from out of the top The three visible corners of the tower are marked where they reach the ground by double-height entrance features The slick, tinted glass envelope features a double façade which acts as a thermal and acoustic buffer On the inner façade, openable windows are located at 1200mm centres Project is not public! 27 Zurich Parcel Centre Zürcherstrasse Zurich Theo Hotz was an ardent admirer of British High-Tech from the 1970s and 1980s This influence is evident in this project for the Zurich Parcel Centre The project was won in a competition in 1970 and took 6 years to design due to its size and complexity It is 300m long and 170m wide, and was intended to handle parcels a day, accompanied by the movements of over 200 railway wagons and 300 vehicles in the same 24-hour period Regrettably for Hotz, he was unable to work with the foreign engineers and consultants he admired, so his work lacks some of the flamboyance of Foster, Rogers and their ilk Eschewing externally expressed structure and the like, he concentrated on the envelope, producing - in collaboration with local manufacturers - the thoroughly accomplished insulated skin we see here Public access unknown! 1985 Theo Hotz Swiss Post Office davidb Take a number 2 tram in the direction of Farbhof From the end of the line the project is about 800m west along Badenerstrasse 27
's and Artist's Apartment House Sädlenweg Zurich This contemporary block of four apartments sits on a north-facing hillside in the western suburbs of Zurich It is spread over four levels, with two duplex apartments and two smaller roof top units - all of which wrap around each other At first glance (and in most photographs) it looks as if it is clad in concrete, when in fact the skin is made of 3mm-thick galvanised sheet steel The armature of the house, that is to say the foundation slab and the main internal stair cores, are indeed formed from in-situ concrete However the remainder of the walls, both internal and external, are formed using timber studs Internally, the materials and surfaces are undecorated, giving the interior a neutral appearance In total contrast are the bathrooms and kitchens which are lined with some very vivid colours, coated onto the backs of glass sheets Project is not public! Floor area/size m² Andreas Fuhrimann Gabrielle Hächler Architekten davidb Take a number 9 or 14 tram in the direction of Tremi The last part of the route runs along Birmensdorfer Strasse to a traffic island containing the tram terminus Alight from the tram, continue west along Birmensdorfer Strasse, up the hill for approximately 600m, then take the second left into Sädlenweg The project is about half-way along the street on the right-hand side 28
Aussersihl Community Centre Hohlstrasse Zurich This project was won in competition in 1999 The site is a historic memorial park, on the western side of the city centre - a sensitive location The architects decided to break with convention for a community centre, and build vertically, rather than horizontally The initial proposal was for a six-storey, angular tower nestling by some trees on the eastern side of the site After completing the design, the budget was slashed, and the design team were sent back to the drawing board The revised scheme is still in the form of a tower, but only four storeys, including a basement and kidney-shaped in plan The structure is formed of lime brick walls and concrete floor slabs It is clad in timber boards, stained dark green, to help the building blend in with its surroundings By contrast, the interiors are painted in many different and bright colours The ground floor contains a café, which is popular with the locals out enjoying the park Project is public! 2000 Services engineer Structural engineer EM2N Amstein+Walthert Tragwerk Bauingenieure GmbH City of Zurich Department of Social Welfare davidb The project is located in Backeranlage Park The number 8 tram stops here 29
Bodmer-Areal apartment buildings Michael-Maggi-Strasse Zurich Four separate building volumes are connected by a 60-90cm raised base that functions as a semi-private space Two striking pedestrian passages, cross the open space from North to South and link the edges of the buildings to each other The apartments are intended to have a strong / solid, yet elegant expression Large balconies outfitted with dark glass, alternated with thick concrete layers help to achieve this image in the façade Due to the nearby highway the apartment floor plans have a strong orientation; living areas towards the West, bedrooms towards the East (away from the highway) and service elements (bathrooms, stairs etc) are located in-between Project is not public! 2005 Main designer, Maier Hess Architekten GmbH Cerv + Wachtl Dipl Architekten Roderick Bus 62 towards Mühlacker, stop Aspholz 30
Leutschenbach School Saatlenfussweg Zurich The Leutschenbach School (Schulhaus Leutschenbach) is located in the north of Zurich Designed by architect Christian Kerez, aimed to offer a completely new dimension for learning, this building has brought all the function zones under one roof and one next to another: classrooms, meeting rooms, the cafeteria, the music room and even the gym hall To highlight the architectural creation, the gym hall is designed to be on the top floor instead of submerged under the earth The statics of the building is provided by a steel structure and an embedded slab which is supported on only six points These form the foundation for the large gym hall and ensure the building to be completely earthquakes resistant Project is not public! 33 Glattalbahn Light Rail station Bäulerstrasse Zurich w&id=210&itemid=142 The Glattalbahn is a new rail service linking downtown Zurich with the airport via the Glattal communities The Glattalbahn project consists of 127 km of new double track light rail track and 20 stations The city of Zurich's public transport company (VBZ) operates this service under contract to the VBG It operates as an extension of Zurich's tram #10 under the new name 'Glattalbahn tram #10' for the whole line The striking architecture of the lightrail stops is a part of the overall plan with regard to urban development The railway stops designed by the architect Kai Flender follow a modular construction system with installation kits for technical equipment The standard materials are special powder-coated steel (anti-graffiti), aluminium as well as ESG/VSG glass with special silk-screen The railway stops are multi-functionally fitted with integrated loudspeakers, light boxes, information boxes, special lights, waste bins and ticket machines (text from vbgch and burriagch) Project is public! 2007 Cooperating designer Developer Developer Kai Flender Burri AG VBZ Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich ZVV Zürcher Verkehrsverbund VBG Verkehrsbetriebe Glattal AG Roderick From Zürich HB: Tram 10 direction Zürich Flughafen (Fracht), stop Bäuler (all stops in the area have same design, also along Tram line 11) 33
