4 photo: Helge Garke Höfðatorg Höfðatún Reykjavík The Höfdatorg project is a mixed-use complex located close to the city centre of Reykjavik, due to be finalized in the year 2012 Offices, service and retail as well as residential facilities will house Höfdatorg in a perfect harmony, containing functions like high-end restaurants and shops, a supermarket, a movie theatre, cafes and luxury apartments Höfdatorg will consist of six buildings, constructed on top of three levels of underground garage photo: Helge Garke Public access unknown! 2009 Main designer,, Interior architect Client PK Arkitektar PK_Arkitektar LWW Architekten Eykt 4

5 photo: Rafael Pinho photo: Rafael Pinho Geothermal water pump stations Suðurlandsbraut Reykjavik Every house of the city is heated to day with geothermal water making the old system of oil heating obsolete When foreigners approach Reykjavik on a sunny and frost still winter day, they are amazed to see no smoke rising from the chimneys The air is fresh and clean The building is a 14 sqm steel structure (3 by 65 meters) constructed of two stainless steel clad curvilinear walls separated by a door at each end The building is built at a shop off site and moved in one piece to a hot water well The building houses the mechanism on top of the well, that pumps the water to a central control from where it is distributed throughout the city A vertical element hanging from the roof to the side of the building contains the air-conditioning system for the machinery, taking air from the top and pumping it down to the floor, creating a circulation of air, cooling the motor and creating over pressure inside to avoid dust from getting inside and damaging the motor system Floor area/size 14 m² Client PK Arkitektar Orkuveita Reykjavíkur Fernando_de_Mendonca photo: Rafael Pinho 5

6 Harpa Ingólfsgarður IS-101 Reykjavik Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre is the official home of the Symphony Orchestra and the ic Opera The new building is part of the East Harbour Project: an expansion and revitalisation of Reykjavík's eastern harbour with a new downtown plaza, a shopping street, a hotel, residential buildings, educational institutions, and mixed industry Danish-ic artist Ólafur Elíasson designed the south façade and developed the principle for the remaining north/east/west façades and roof Elíasson deploys light, colour, and natural phenomena to test how physical movement, sensual engagement, and the interaction of body and brain influence our perception of our surroundings In every glass block in the south side wall LED light is installed, to change the facade according to the seasons in According to Harpa there has never been used so much LED in any construction in the world Floor area/size m² Main designer, Artist Supplier Henning Larsen Batteriid s Olafur Eliasson GIRA Naomi It's possible to book a tour through the building Check wwwharpais for more information 6

7 Hallgrímskirkja Skólavörðustígur Reykjavik Hallgrímskirkja is a Lutheran parish church in Reykjavík, At 73 metres, it is the largest church in and the sixth tallest architectural structure in The church is named after the ic poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson State Guðjón Samúelsson's design of the church was commissioned in 1937 He is said to have designed it to resemble the basalt lava flows of 's landscape It took 38 years to build the church Construction work began in 1945 and ended in 1986, the landmark tower being completed long before the church's actual completion The crypt beneath the choir was consecrated in 1948, the steeple and wings were completed in 1974, and the nave was consecrated in 1986 Situated in the centre of Reykjavík, it is one of the city's best-known landmarks and is visible throughout the city Gudjon Samuelsson Nazar The church and the tower: 9 am to 9 pm 7

8 ISTAK headquarter Engjateigur Reykjavik Ístak's new headquarters building was inspired by the nature and the significance of Tingvalla, both as an ancient meeting place for the country's Allting (the world's first parliamentary meeting place) as well as a geological phenomenon; the fissure between the north Atlantic and Euro-asiatic continental plates The fissure's spatial sequence of clefts, with varying daylight access, textural weight, reflections in the water and the dynamic view of the surrounding landscape is echoed in the headquarters building as architectural effects expressed in Corten steel, glass and concrete The scheme respects the existing building pattern in Engjateigur and fills out a space, where there is a change in direction of a row of detached buildings With the chosen form and the organization of the site, there was also the desire to give the building an easily perceived identity as a typical ic country house, in a grassy landscape with the sea in the background Project is not public! 2005 Main designer, KHR architekter ARKÍS arkitektar Nazar 8

9 Reykjavík University Menntavegur Reykjavik The new Reykjavik University is seen as a town rather than a building Laying out the University as a classic, close knit urban structure with streets, squares, recesses and courtyards creates a place with urbanity, dynamism and community at its centre The main central space of the University - Crossroads - fulfils the function of the main square of a classic town This is where people converge and diverge, the place from which the main arteries of human traffic radiate These arteries demarcate the different faculties, such that each faculty forms a distinctive neighborhood within the city, each with its own little alleys, squares and surprise views of the surrounding landscape The interior courtyards afford increased opportunities to be outdoors, as they provide shelter from the wind while the low height of the buildings lets in the sun 2010 Main designer, ARKÍS arkitektar Henning Larsen Nazar 9

10 Reykjavík Art Museum Tryggvagata Reykjavik Founded in 1973, the Reykjavík Art Museum is the largest visual art institution in Its mission to present contemporary art in its many manifestations is carried out through diverse programs at the museum's three venues: Hafnarhus, Kjarvalsstadir, and Asmundarsafn The museum is situated at three different locations in the city: Kjarvalsstadir exhibition hall at Miklatún, inaugurated in 1973, where the main emphasis is on paintings and sculpture by well established artists; Hafnarhus, located in downtown Reykjavik, inaugurated in 2000, which serves as the museums institute of contemporary art, where new developments in art are explored; and the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum and Park at Sigtún, inaugurated in 1991, which is dedicated to the work of the sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson 2001 Studio Granda Nazar Open: 10:00-17:00 Thursday 10:00-20:

11 The Supreme Court of Ingólfsstræti 101 Reykjavik After the transfer of power from Denmark, the Court was first housed in the Old Penitentiary Building on Skólavörðustígur in Reykjavík In 1949 it moved to the former court building on Lindargata 1993 saw a competition to design a new home for the Court, which was won by Margrét Harðardóttir and Steve Christer of Studio Grandi, Reykjavík The ic Minister of Justice dug the first spade of ground for the new Courthouse of the Supreme Court of at Arnarhóll on 15 July 1994, laid the cornerstone of the building on the Court's 75th anniversary, 16 February 1995, and handed it over to the Court for use on 5 September Studio Granda Nazar 11
