1 S t e r l i n g M c M u r r i n To Whom It May Concern, I would be honored to talk with you about joining your Studio. People of my background do not drop by every day and I have a great deal to offer a team of dynamic and thoughtful designers: I studied with Richard Haag and Thomas Bosworth at the University of Washington in Seattle, worked as a designer detailer for David Rockwell on the Disney Family Museum and the Imagination Playground at South Street Seaport in Manhattan. For a number of years, I managed and co designed at artist Michael Singer s Architectural Studio in Vermont, providing detailing, contracts, contract documents, budgets, and construction administration as well as masonry construction for many public and private projects. Recently, I worked as an Artist in Residence at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, designing and constructing large scale outdoor stone and wood installations for the hospital and the attached unique Menino Park for Children of All Abilities. I am looking for a studio that values my experience and knowledge gained from hands on construction of buildings, landscape, furniture and millwork, masonry, sculpture, bass wood models, shop drawings, and freehand drawings as much as digital methods of design. I have been a member of both the design/drafting team, and the construction team on most of the projects attached. Trained in the modernist tradition, with deep roots in the classical, I have built with my own hands many of my own designs. My training includes construction school in the U.S. Navy Seabees as well as Environmental Sculpture at University of Washington, Seattle, and M Arch at M.I.T. in Design and Real Estate Development ( 88). My focus on the combination of civil engineering, environment and classic beauty has involved me in many valuable projects through leadership, detail support, contract documents, construction administration, site supervision as well as shop drawings and actual construction of special elements. My teachers worked with Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen and Walter Gropius. As an artist in residence, general manager of a sculpture & architecture studio, a design / builder, I have collaborated on projects of all types, including land and water reclamation, in twelve states, coast to coast, Japan, Germany, and Czech Republic. My architectural and landscape design work is on rivers, lakes, in mountains, on waterfronts and in major cities and has weathered the test of time. My early work with campus planning as well as research and medical laboratories helped me gain a practical approach. As a member of a design team, I look forward to working with talented people of all ages and experience, having been pleased with the exuberance and dedication of young designers I have supported in the past. Their work has been realized through my details and construction administration, allowing their gutsy passion and thoughtfulness to show through to the built result. I am able to work a flexible schedule and am very, very affordable. And, yes, I have worked extensively in Revit, AutoCad, Rhino, Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Sketchup. McMurrin Page sterlingriver@gmail.com Skills: I have many years of experience in Construction Detailing, Construction Administration, Design Management, Socially Conscious & Green Design with a concentration on LEED. I have personally constructed by hand many of my own designs. Most masonry in my portfolio is flush jointed, stone on stone with no mortar visible, stainless attachments, with thin-set grout or epoxy, with rain screen type detailing. I have also poured bronze and iron, wrought brass and stainless steel, carved and cast stone, and worked the earth with heavy machinery, finishing up with major planting. I do all preliminary calculations for foundation supports, structural engineering, and water works including pumping, drainage and wastewater, budgets and scheduling for design, construction and maintenance. These are critical parts of my design process. Having been a team player on many architectural, landscape, and public art projects, I provide team support at any level of design, contract documents, and construction administration. I currently work extensively in Revit, Autocad, Excel, Word, Sketchup, Rhino, Adobe CS. I can easily adjust to computer systems used in the office or in the field. I freehand draw measured sketches in 3D that are acceptable as contract drawings in the field. My presentation drawings are a mixture of hand drawings and computer graphics. I make models for design process, detailed industrial production, and for museum exhibitions. As a Veteran of the US Navy Seabees, I understand responsibility and teamwork under pressure.
