4 Lifting Matters A report by the CEO Easter is behind us and the winter months are approaching. But I have little idea about when the Global Financial Crisis season will abate. Local commentators tell us we are facing a long and hard financial winter. And while that may be true, our country and our generation is still a lucky one as most Australians are still able to find a way forward; to shop and be entertained; to plan for and walk down the home ownership pathway; to enjoy our freedom; and to watch our families grow up in safety. Our parents and grand parents now they can talk about hardship, economic depressions and world wars. So putting things into perspective, most will keep positive. After all, in business as in life, you either give up or you keep going. Considering that many baby boomers are approaching retirement a planned exit may well be a good option. However many others may have ongoing business plans and When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going. I take this opportunity to remind you and highlight some important issues: Award Modernisation: As reported by CICA and Media Release, a modern stand-alone award has been achieved via the Mobile Crane Hiring Award Well done to CICA s leadership on this project led by John Gillespie, Albert Smith and Craig Meldrum. Great appreciation is noted for the expert IR advice and assistance from the AiGroup. CraneSafe progress: I have to say a big well-done to Jeff Brundell, the CraneSafe National Coordinator, who steadily plots the forward progress of the CraneSafe Program whether it be adding additional categories to the assessments; appointing new assessors; developing a quality audit program; updating the system data base; important assessor communications; expanding the meetings of assessors; and more. On behalf of the members and the industry thank you Jeff. For the record, the CraneSafe Management Committee is responsible for overseeing and progressing the program and John Gillespie works with actively with Jeff on this Committee Conference: there is no way I could write my column without a regular plug for CICA s flagship event, taking place in Canberra 30/9 to 2/10. Many thanks to John Gillespie, Heidi Hervay and the NSW Conference Committee shaping this great event. Refer the CICA website for the latest details, along with the 2009 Lift of the Year Awards Conference: while on the topic of Conferences, keep watch for the details of this event taking place in Perth next year. Many thanks to the efforts of Stephen (and Sonia) Lazenby and Craig Meldrum putting in the early planning. Mark this destination in your 2010 plans. Training Plans: Bob Davis is researching and compiling a CICA training proposal to put to the CICA Board later this year. This is typical of the volunteer efforts of people on the CICA Board. Thank you Bob. CICA website: recently and going forward extra efforts are being made to add additional information to the website, such as the latest Conference details; the recent Media Releases; the CICA draft Strategic Plan; updating the CICA membership list; and the recent CICA Newsletters. International Events: as usual there are some big events coming up, such as - CA NZ Conference: 14-17/7/09, Surfers Paradise - World Crane & Transport Summit: 22-23/10/09, Amsterdam - BAUMA: 19-25/4/10, Munich In closing, I would like to thank my staff for their ongoing hard-working efforts for CICA and its Members: CraneSafe Administration: CICA Administration/Accounts: Kylie Charrett Lisa Legge Thank You Kylie and Lisa! 6 VCA Update The Victorian Crane Association (VCA), with the financial assistance of Incolink, has appointed a Field Safety Liaison Officer. Incolink administers the redundancy funds of Victorian industry members and provides both portable sick leave and income and trauma schemes and a range of other services and benefits for both employer and employee members. The VCA appointed Brent Stacey to fulfil the position and Brent started on April 1 st The Liaison Officer role is new and Brent is the first employee of the VCA. Brent continues... This exciting position is now up and running. I have started my visits to various crane yards to introduce myself and the new position to crane owners, crane management staff as well as the men and women in the field. The first port of call for myself is to get to know as many of the VCA members as possible. I have sent a letter to each of the current members and have started to relevant information such as safety toolbox topics and reminders of safe work practices for yard managers to print out for lunch room walls. Please let me know if you are not receiving that information. I have already made some appointments to start running a computer based refamiliarisation program amongst members and their employees. Whilst proof of competency is proven by employees showing their tickets, many of those tickets were issued a number of years ago. VCA members have a fantastic opportunity to boost their client compliance levels to exceed requirements through utilisation of the Liaison Officer program. I have three computers that I can set up in your premises or onsite to facilitate crane chart and crane set up familiarisation. I have taken up an office in Dandenong and am very grateful on behalf of the VCA to P&D Cranes and Barry in particular for the space. There is also an opportunity for the program to take place in my Dandenong office. The CICA office is a very busy epicentre of Cranesafe, Green Stickers and CICA activities and whilst negotiations are in the pipeline for a new CICA home, there is limited space there. I will be spending much of my time on the road anyway. I certainly have much to learn, especially in respect to what each VCA member is looking for in return for their membership. I am well aware of the choice that members make each year, and would like to help those who choose to make the membership commitment each year achieve their objectives. I do have a strong crane background, having worked with cranes and construction for 15 years. I most recently was working as crane operator and rigger for a period of six years for a large crane company here in Victoria, but have been lucky to work in many other fabulous parts of the country, Queensland in particular. Victorians, I am looking forward to getting into your part of the state soon. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have, in particularly on how I can work with your company to help you get value from your membership dollar. You have made the choice to commit to an association that is moving forward with a commitment to be there for its members. Together I hope we can influence aspects of our industry that improve safety for all and prevent accidents that are preventable. The rate of incidents involving cranes in Australia so far this year is beyond any recollection of mine. More of our cranes are now certified as safe than ever before. Computers certainly accelerate the spread of stories and pictures at warp speeds, so let s harness some of that energy and use the same medium to spread a message of safety involving cranes. I am looking forward to meeting many new people and re-introducing myself to many others in the short term future. The people Why should businesses support the state & national associations? The crane industry deals with high risk operations that can have large impacts, both safety and financial, on the general public as well as crane folk. If the industry doesn t regulate itself, the government will likely play a greater role in providing that regulation. Strong support of the associations is the only way I can see for the industry members to organise themselves properly for self regulation. What is your favourite activity/hobby outside of work? Running/mountain biking/ spending time with family 10. What is your favourite book, movie or TV show? Any of the Chaser shows. 11. What is your favourite food, cuisine, restaurant?
