Dear friends, when the crane birds have left and the geese start to leave for southern lands, then it is the right time, to think again about the newsletter. We waited for summer, and when it finally came, before we had understood, that it was there, it had gone again. Now its autumn and we enjoy now and then the nice weather, when the sun comes out and warms us. The grain and potatoes are harvested and put into the storage. The onions we still tie together into long plaids, the early cabbages we had to make into sauerkraut, the berries are harvested and made into juice and jam, and the pears are made into pear compote. The tomatoes were made into tomato sauce, the mangolds we put into the deepfreeze. Carrots, beetroot and fodder beet as well as the late cabbage wait still on the field. We are grateful, that we could even with bad weather harvest so much and that during summer we always had something fresh to eat. The tables we could also decorate with the most beautiful flowers, as there were this year some flowerbeds in the small garden, where these beauties for the flower vases grew. But who were behind those fast hands, which helped to bring the harvest to the cellars? As everybody helps along, it is not necessary, to name anybody especially, but maybe we should mention our volunteers: Henning, Annika, Hannah, Katharina, Tina, they finished their year in Pahkla and went back to Germany again, where they start to go to university. But Annika came already back again, in order to start her second year in Pahkla. Our new volunteers are: Charlotte, Arina, Franziska, Luna-Bess. For six weeks came Magdalena, a praktikant from the Waldorfschool in Linz, Austria, and for three months came Lea, student in ecotrophology from Germany, to do an internship with us. All of them are highly motivated and with a good song on their lips the work goes at once very smoothly. Lena was here for her second year, and after officially leaving, she still came again and again to make people happy with her presence and of course also to help with all the work. We are happy, that Dirk came now already for the third time, to lend Wiebe a hand in renovating the stable. Many new doors and boxes for the grain have been built. What happens in the world does not go past us without, that we would move these topics during meals, at work or during bible evening. The refugee crisis, political tensions, earthquakes, we talk about it and think, what it could mean for us. Already in the fifties Karl König (the founder of the Camphill Movement) was of the opinion, that once the time would come, that Camphill Villages are a home for all people, who need help, like refugees, old people, and other people, who do not manage, to come along with our fast and crazy life and need a supportive community (Karl König: from an essay in Camphill-Brief, Christmas 1965). Has this time come now? There is still the question, how it could be possible, with laws, which seem to be from quite a different time to realize new projects? Already 23 years we have been working, with our hearts, and following a clear feeling that what is right and necessary, one has to do, even if laws get there only in maybe a hundred years. Especially during Michaelmas time we should not allow to arise in us doubt or fear, with courage we move into the new time, always convinced, that we will find the right path. With best wishes for a good Michelmas time and a courageous autumn, Katarina
Thank you, Margit! The Estonian Camphill village community Pahkla Camphilli Küla would not exist without the strong intention of Margit to bring the Camphill movement to the East. Until not so very long ago, Margit kept visiting us in Pahkla and tried to care for the small plant called community and spiritual impulse. This was very much at her heart, and when visiting her in her last living place in Öschelbronn in Germany she eagerly wanted to know from me, how this plant was growing and thriving. Also the villagers themselves she carried in her heart and when seeing their photographs she still remembered all their names. Right from the beginning the public interest in our village was big and now there are several new villages created by the state and private initiatives, who try to find their own ways in community life: The small plant put into the ground by Margit as a seed carries fruit! Suur aitäh, thank you very much, Margit. We will keep you in our hearts. Joan Allen Joan Allen was instrumental in helping our village to come about. She helped to find the suitable land, to build the houses and she was very supportive with establishing that, what is the inner community. Joan was the architect of Helle House and Vikerkaar (Rainbow) House and many halls, chapels, and houses throughout Camphill. She recently received the Camphill Association of North America Lifetime Achievement Award. She is beloved throughout the Camphill world, as she not only created plans for buildings, but served on boards, met and got to know many people in many places, no doubt all of whom felt her warmth and interest. She co-authored many books with her husband Paul and was an earnest student and teacher of Anthroposophy. We are very grateful to Joan, that she kept coming regularly, the last time was two years ago, and always followed us in our development. She was for us like a guardian or godparent. Thank you, Joan, aitäh! Katarina Treat people as if they were what they can be and you will help them become what they are capable of being. Goethe Pahkla shop Although we do not have a normal shop in our village, you are welcome, to buy our products. Everybody, who buys our products, helps us, to make it possible, that we can do the work we do. Christmas will soon knock at the door, the nights are already much longer, the dark time has started. This is the right time, to think about candle orders. Our candles are made of 100 percent beeswax, so as we buy it from Estonian beekeepers. If you look on our website and click on Shop then opens our candle shop, where you can download our order form to order candles from us. There are enough candles in the storage. But if you want to come to Pahkla, then you can buy much more: in the weavery the new season already started, and there are still many rugs and socks waiting for their new owners. Our herb teas and the herb salt is not ready yet, but hopefully in six weeks time, our summer harvest has been put into bags. The potatoes are in the cellar, who wants to buy, get in contact with our farmers. Katarina
Marek Every Saturday I make the meal for the animals. Urmas carries the bags with the flour. Wiebe and Dirk made new stable doors and I helped them as well. With Claudia I made apple jam, in Tamme house we made pear compote. Yesterday evening I helped the volunteers to make pear cake. Every Saturday I clean my room and sweep the dust away. The maple trees are beautifully clad in red leaves. The tree behind my house is especially beautiful. I made photos of it. Tere! my name is lea and i am going to live, work and stay in pahkla for the next three months during the wonderful autumn. i just arrived last week without any expectations and raw notions. the welcome was really hearty and i feel already a kind of home. maybe this is also because there is a lot to lend a hand for. the gardens and the fields are full of fruits, vegetables and grain. we picked potatoes, apples, pears, cabbages, zucchinis.. together with the sun and a lot of smiling. usually i'm learning more the theoretical part of working on a farm and how to live and organize the life with a lot of people everyone with his or her characteristics. and here i enjoy to live the practical work every day. is so colourful and rich like the autumn! Lea
Magdalena and Charlotte Magda and I arrived in August. It was very easy to get used to the new lifestyle and connect to the people. Even in this short time we've been learning many interesting and useful things like cooking with self-picked and own grown food. And we learned in our introductory course many things for example about the existence and usefulness of the Maria von Thun calendar. We are fascinated by the nature and culture of Estonia. By the way we did a sightseeing tour through Tallinn and it was very helpful to understand the Estonian history and the temperament of the Estonian (optimistic in a pessimistic way) and of their dark humor ;) All in all we have a great time here and even though Magda has to leave us soon she promised that she will come again to visit me in the next 11 months.
Tartu From Sunday until Friday I went to Tartu. There were different works. Massage and water gym I did. When I arrived together with Pille and the children in the Lehe Street, they had just their supper. I like Tartu very much. It was nice to travel together with Tiit s family to Tartu. My holidays are over. I am happy. Maarjo Request This year seems to be a year, where there are in one place many, in the other place few apples. When we started to think about making apple juice, we had to realize, that we belong to those places, where there are only very few apples, and it won t be enough for juice. Just in case anybody is so lucky, to have too many apples in order to get on with them this year, we would gladly come and help; we would also come and collect the apples ourselves (Katrin Pedaste) (Tiit Timmerman) Another request is maybe more a dream, but sometimes it is also necessary to have dreams. During summer, when many of us could not really get away for some holidays, the wish grew, to go for a short holiday with some people. But financially this is not possible for us. Our dream is a summer cottage for the village, where it would also be possible for some co-workers, to have a rest sometimes. If anybody has an idea, how this could once become possible for us, please contact us. Katarina Garden There were many plums (one basket full). There were more pears and apples. Cherries we did not have at all. The potatoes are harvested and I planted the garlic. Maarjo Berry harvest We collected many currants, black currants, red currants, white currants. Hannah learned, how to make jam and juice and sat the whole day on top of the pots. Kersti K. Journey to France We went on a bus journey. In Brussels we saw the Manneken Pis. We saw all sorts of churches: Chartres cathedral and many others. In Paris we saw the Eiffel Tower. We went swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. It was warm and salty. We slept in hotels. First in Poland, then in Germany, in Magdeburg, the third was outside Paris, then we were at the west coast of France, where we stayed three nights. Every day we drove around by bus, saw churches and sculptures. With a lift we went up Mount Saint Michel. The shops we went to were different from those in Estonia. The choice was bigger and more beautiful. There was only white bread. We did not see any dark bread. We had those long baguettes; others ate Kellogs, or chocolate cream. At the sea we saw, how oysters were
harvested; several tractor loads full went to some factory. Andres tried to eat oysters and they tasted somehow. Alar collected shells. We went with a double-decker bus, and it was full with people. They came from Pärnu, Viljandi, Rapla and Kati kodu. And we were Alar, Andres and Kairi from Pahkla. When we visited towns, the guide told us interesting facts. The journey went very well and we liked it. It was an interesting journey. Early in the morning we left, late at night we came back. Andres and Alar We travelled through Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, where we stayed in a hotel. The next morning we got up at 6.00, after breakfast in shifts our luggage was put into the bus. Then we went to Germany where we stayed for the night. We drove through Holland, in the capital of Belgium, Brussels, we made a pause. At every petrol station we made pauses as well. We three were together with people from Kati Kodu. In the hotels were rooms for three. I was together with Meeli and Tea, Alar and Andres were together with Raivo. We did not have to sleep in the bus. We were 77 people. We went to the shops and bought souvenirs. In Brussels I bought a small Manneken Pis, in France I bought perfumes. All sorts of churches we saw and the guide told us something about all these places. The French houses were special, they had different forms. One street we drove past was very dirty. We also visited a fun fair, but the carousel was too expensive. I like the French sweets, they are very good. With the lift I went up to the Eiffel Tower, I enjoyed the beautiful view from up there. It cost The churches were very beautiful. In Paris we went for one hour on a boat ride. There were many Triumphal arches. Every time, when people went through, they shouted of happiness. We were lucky with the weather. It was very good weather the whole time. Kairi In the camp of the Johannites The 26th of July we went at to the camp. Henning brought us. We were Kristiina, Andres, Merike and I. There happened different activities. We went horseracing and to the zoo. The same day a polar bear baby was born. We went to the fire brigades and they showed us their fire engines. They had lamps, which reached very far. Every afternoon we played football. One day we made pancakes, another day we made bread on the fire. There was also theatre and services. I am very grateful, that I could again take part in the camp. Jevgeni What I do I learn German and also English. I am interested in German and English books. If I order by e- mail books from Germany, I save money as I order only cheap books, not so expensive ones, which I could not pay for. If I cannot pay for a book in the internet, I also do not order it. The books, I want are not for sale in Estonia. Arina helps me with ordering. Every Thursday I mill flour and every Friday I bake bread. Kristiina
