3 TRANSACTIONS OF THE HISTORIC SOCIETY OF LANCASHIRE AND CHESHIRE FOR THE YEAR 1958 VOLUME 110 LIVERPOOL PRINTED FOR THE SOCIETY 1959
4 Made and Printed in Great Britain by C. Tinling & Co., Ltd., Liverpool, London and Prescot.
5 EDITORIAL NOTE This volume devotes far more space to Lancashire than to Cheshire history. Each year the Council seeks to do justice to each of its two counties, but the contrast between the present acute shortage of acceptable Cheshire papers and the abundance of good Lancashire papers has frustrated its recent attempts to achieve a balance. It is some compensation that the papers in this volume are not confined to one corner of Lancashire, and that they range from the banks of the Mersey to the northern shore of Morecambe Bay, and from the coastal plain to the Yorkshire border. In the past our general indexes have been haphazardly spaced, but one has been printed in this volume, Volume 110, in the hope that our successors will follow the convenient precedent set by the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society and publish a general index in every tenth volume. The Council wishes to thank Mr. W. Fergusson Irvine and Mr. R. Cunliffe Shaw for providing blocks for this volume, and Miss E. B. Saxton for preparing the general index. 18 June J. J. BAGLEY, The University, Honorary Editor. Liverpool. The Council wishes it to be known that authors alone are responsible for the opinions and statements in their several papers. Contributors to these TRANSACTIONS are advised to write to the Honorary Editor. Members who wish to read papers should write to the Honorary Secretary.
