9 EDITORIAL NOTE Why is this (short) editorial always so hard to compose? One reason is that the editors rarely get any reaction to their efforts. The quality of the papers printed is indicated, only roughly, by frequency of citation by other scholars, and by inclusion in printed bibliographies and annual summaries of periodical literature, such as those produced by The Economic History Review. It is the editors' policy, supported by the society's council, only to publish scholarly material, but this can be produced by a wide range of potential writers, and we always welcome authors' manuscripts. Do the society's members prefer the wide-ranging content of this volume to the more restricted content of Medieval Cheshire or Seventeenth Century Lancashire (Volumes 128 and 132 respectively)? Should there be more or less such specialist volumes (and what might they cover), or have we got the balance right? What else might we do?
