7 EDITORIAL NOTE Unusually, the editors have been able to produce a volume this year, which in terms of the range of topics, and their chronological and geographical distribution, should contain something of interest to most readers. The contents of each volume of the Transactions depends on the nature of the articles submitted, and although it would be rewarding to receive articles, on, for example, that neglected period the late 17th and Hith-centuries, such are the shifting interests among historians that the editors must normally be content to reflect whatever are the concerns of our contributors. Next year, however, the vagaries of fashion will be put to a particularly good use. The overwhelming and consistent popularity of the 17th century as a period of study in the north-west, must surely owe much to the teaching and research of Mr. J.J. Bagley, a former editor of this journal. Volume 132 will be a collection of essays on 17th-century Lancashire, dedicated as a festschrift to celebrate his seventy-fifth birthday. The editors wish to thank Mrs. Grace \\yatt for preparing the Index to this volume. University of Liverpool J.I. Kermode University of Manchester C.B.
