5 Description Norton Hall is a beautifully presented and elegant property, built in 1820 and set in the heart of the privately owned Norton Hall Estate. The Grade II listed Hall is hidden away down a ½ mile long driveway flanked by Oak and Lime trees, and commands exceptional open countryside views across to Meon Hill and the Cotswold escarpment. Over the years, the property has been extended, and sympathetically updated throughout, with the end result providing elegant and generous accommodation. The living spaces are beautifully presented with great style suited to both formal entertaining and more relaxed family living. The imposing staircase through the middle of the house leads up to the spacious galleried landing on the first floor, with feature arch details. Drawing Room The Hall retains a number of period features throughout, with high ceilings, ornate cornicing, marble fireplaces and large sash windows, (some with working shutters), that take full advantage of the superior position that Norton Hall commands. There are a number of ancillary rooms including a second catering kitchen, laundry room, large boot room and an extensive number of cellar rooms located beneath the main footprint of the house. The gardens and grounds surrounding Norton Hall, together with the heated outdoor swimming pool, tennis court and arboretum, take full and undiluted advantage of the spectacular open views which provide a magnificent backdrop to this historical property. The main Hall is complimented by an adjoining cottage which is currently occupied by the housekeeper/ groundsman couple. Dining Room
6 History The Estate itself has an intriguing history, dating back to the early 1600 s when it was owned by George Giffard. In 1608, when George Giffard found himself in financial hardship, what many believe was caused by on-going errors of judgement, the Estate had to be split. Lower Norton, including Norton Hall was sold to Sir Richard Fiennes. The Hall then changed hands several times over the following years, but was eventually purchased in 1884 by Samuel Bruce, who subsequently relocated his family from Northern Ireland to Norton Hall. During the First World War, the eldest daughter of the family, Maye Emily, loaned Norton Hall to the Red Cross as a Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital. Maye Emily was Commandant of the hospital for the duration of the war and brought in help from the local community. The house was once again sold in 1925 and finally in 1935, when it was purchased by the family of the current owners. Situation Norton Hall is situated 2 miles from the Cotswold Village of Mickleton. Mickleton is the most northern village in Gloucestershire on the western edge of the Cotswold escarpment on the county border. The village lies in a fine setting overlooked by Meon Hill. The village benefits from a Grade I Listed Norman Church, primary and nursery schools, the popular Three Ways Hotel which is home of the World famous Pudding Club who meet every Friday night, a number of B&Bs, two good public houses, a sought-after country butchers shop, a village shop with grocer and post office. Chipping Campden which is only a short drive away, is a popular historical village, and it offers a variety of specialist shops and restaurants. The Secondary School has a very good reputation and good OFSTED report. More extensive and varied schools, shops, supermarkets, leisure facilities, cultural activities and, The Royal Shakespeare Theatre can be found in Stratford- upon- Avon only 8 miles away. Since the early seventeenth century the Robert Dover s Cotswold Olimpick Games are held every summer on the Friday evening following the late Spring Bank-holiday. The notorious cheese rolling down a nearby hill often makes headline news. There are an abundance of beautiful walks in the area, including the famous Cotswold Way and a circular walk up to Hidcote Manor Garden (National Trust) and Kiftsgate Court Gardens Amenities The Local villages provide a range of day to day shopping facilities with more extensive cultural and leisure facilities provided in Evesham, Stratford upon Avon and Cheltenham. Local sporting facilities are excellent, with horse racing at Cheltenham Worcester and Stratford; golf at Broadway, Tewkesbury and Evesham and polo at Cirencester Park. The M5 offers commuting access to Birmingham,, Gloucester and Worcester, with access to the M42 and M40. London Paddington is approximately 1½ hours from Honeybourne & Moreton-in-Marsh.
