2 East Lake Shore Drive Built in 1913, 199 E. Lake Shore Drive is one of eight buildings constructed along East Lake Shore Drive -- a prestigious block long stretch of Lake Shore Drive that travels east-west instead of north-south. This historic district is one of the few areas where the architectural design is cohesive (built between 1912 and 1929), and not interrupted by modern construction. Five of the eight buildings were designed by noted architect, Benjamin Marshall. East Lake Shore Drive is considered by many people to be among the most valuable residential real estate in Chicago. The Architect Benjamin H. Marshall is among the city's best known architect/ developers. Marshall was born in 1874, the only son of an affluent Chicago family. Unlike his peers, he dropped out of school at the age of seventeen to pursue a career in men's clothing design. Two years later, he discovered an interest in architecture. By the time he was twenty-one years old and without formal training, Marshall became a full partner at a prestigious architectural firm. By age twenty-eight when Marshall started his own firm, he was already on his way toward making his mark on Chicago's architectural landscape.

3 199 East Lake Shore Drive This pre-world War I apartment house remains one of the more elegantly conceived residences in the city. An 11-story red brick and white glazed terra cotta building, its distinctive classical details and central row of bay windows are matched by an urbane variation several doors east at 999 N. Lake Shore Drive, also by Marshall and Fox. The two stood in 1913 as Lonely pioneers [the only buildings standing at the time on East Lake Shore Drive]. The main building was erected as an investment by architect Benjamin Marshall four years before he added the annex just to the west. Most main building apartments are one to a floor, but the annex contains a series of duplexes. There are 13 apartments in all. Each is divided into public, private and service sectors - or living, sleeping and servants' quarters as its self-description put it - revealing Marshall's careful planning and sensitivity to his wealthy clients. "Every modern convenience obtainable in present day life is included in the equipment," the developers promised, and in this case it was no overstatement. A rental building for many years, 199 E.
