3 Witte Kaap Wim Noordhoekkade Amsterdam The housing complex and commercial units are situated on a triangular plot This uniquely sited building is often compared to a cruise ship In the middle section, the building has only three storeys, but this gradually increases to seven storeys towards both ends At street level, a strip of white pebbles forms a transitional zone to the dwellings 2011 Claus en Kaan en HelleBeelden 3

4 photo: Piotr Krajewski Steigereiland Private House Edward Masseystraat ZL Amsterdam On the Steigereiland in Amsterdam, an attractive private house has been built Its striking thatched roof looks like a free-standing sculpture in the middle of the rational city It does, however, comply with all kinds of programmatic parameters specific to the location The thatched roof acts as a light-catcher and provides access to the large roof terrace It also acts as a breastwork and guarantees privacy On the street façade it meets the garden wall of the urban plan The house was inspired by villas from the Amsterdam School, that were being built in and around Amsterdam at the beginning of the 20th century The beauty of brick, wood and straw have been combined here to create an expressive architecture (text from architect's website) 2008 MOPET architecten pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 4

5 Montessorischool Steigereiland John Hadleystraat WB Amsterdam On one of the islands of IJburg, the city council 'stadsdeel Zeeburg' commissioned VMX s to design a Montessori elementary school with a pronounced music programme, including a child day-care/after-school care centre The two storey building is situated as if it were a house on an embankment The front side faces the park, the backside looks towards a housing project across the street The classrooms, located on the first floor have a beautiful view over the park and towards the water The situation of the building facing the park is exploited by having the entrance of both the day-care centre and the school on the park side, thus creating a safe environment for children to play in the park as well as on the school playground Public access unknown! m² VMX s HelleBeelden 5

6 Office Claus & Kaan Krijn Taconiskade HW Amsterdam The private accommodation of Claus and Kaan Amsterdam is an integral part of the building construction which will form block 49A on IJburg, the new Amsterdam neighbourhood which Claus and Kaan have been involved in designing The concrete office block is rectangular and without any frills It is bare architecture in which the structure is integrated into the façade and in which the interior fully exposes the structure In the façade, a regular pattern of large windows has been introduced which offer a picturesque view of the IJmeer and the Dutch cloudscapes The design of the office building is quite simple: it is a stack of spacious open-plan floors One side of the building contains all the facilities including the elevator and a gentle, broad staircase which is finished off in grey like the rest of the building and where the only accent is the reflection from the stainless steel of the banister m² Claus en Kaan en Claus en Kaan architecten HelleBeelden 6

7 photo: Luis Monteiro photo: Luis Monteiro Nescio Bridge Buitenkerkerweg 1095 KL Amsterdam This cycle and pedestrian bridge is the longest in the, spanning the busy Rijn Kanaal in the IJburg district of Amsterdam The result of a close collaboration between architects and engineers, the bridge provides a vital connection for residents of IJburg, a suburb built on recently reclaimed land east of the city, with the Diemerpark at the mainland With its slender form, the bridge slots elegantly into its surroundingsthe bridge has a clear span of 170 m, providing the 10 cm clearance necessary for boats on the canal below The long approaches at either end have e a shallow gradient for cyclists and other bridge users Curved in plan, the bridge is designed to sit elegantly within the reclaimed landscape and to respect its unique ecological habitats A unique feature of this first suspension bridge in the is that the deck is suspended on one side only It is also Wilkinson Eyre s first project in the country photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is public! 2005 Structural engineer Wilkinson Eyre s Arup City of Amsterdam Bjorn_Utpott 24/7 Take tram 26 to IJburg, or tram 9 to Diemen 7

8 photo: BBVH photo: BBVH Cowboyhouse IJburg James Bradleystraat Amsterdam This house on a free-building plot in IJburg is characterised by simplicity and efficiency The plan of the house is stipulated by a central cupboard going through all floors, which forms long viewing lines in the direction of the water The façade is raw and though with materials like unplaned wood and steel Because of this, the house is in strong contrast with its neighbours The back façade has two story high sliding panels with louvers The panels refer to an industrial shipyard by their looks and dimension m², Interior architect BBVH Erik Wazza photo: BBVH 8

9 photo: Primabeeld photo: Primabeeld IJburg College Pampuslaan Amsterdam A good example of a combination project is the IJburg College with housing in Amsterdam On a spacious plot that was initially only intended to house a sports hall, LIAG proposed that it also could be used for a housing programme This made it possible to satisfy the city planning conditions that prescribed a substantial high building With the extra housing programme of approximately 80 dwellings, 'extra ground value' was created on a plot that had an initial book value of 'nil' It was a conscious choice in the project on IJburg to give the complex an identity The dwellings are characterised by their balconies and the lower height between floors The theme 'stacked city" had been used on IJburg, then the buildings would naturally have been better characterised using a different architecture The project consists of a school building for secondary education, a sports complex on the roof and 23 dwellings Part of the parking level is semi-sunken under the school and the schoolyard Public access unknown! m² Main designer, Interior architect Building physics consultant Contractor Services engineer Structural engineer LIAG architects Ateliers DGMR HBB groep Schreuder Groep Van Rossum Raadgevende Ingenieurs HEVO dirkverwoerd photo: Primabeeld 9

10 Solids IJburg Cas Oorthuyskade Amsterdam IJburg is one of Amsterdam's big new urban neighbourhoods extending over seven artificial islands with accommodation planned for 45,000 people In autumn 2007 work began on the 'solids', a perimeter block development consisting of seven buildings, located at the entrance to Haveneiland, the largest of the islands This scheme combines a very high building density the specified floor area ratio of 64 is comparable to that for high-rise neighbourhoods in Asia - with a ground plan allowing for flexibility of use The term 'solids' is intended to reflect the durability of the buildings as well as their functionality That it also encompasses high-quality architecture is apparent from the impressive façades and the elegant foyers as well the careful selection and details of the materials m² baumschlager & eberle HelleBeelden 10

17 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer School 'tij49 Frans Zieglerstraat HN Amsterdam Blok 49 on IJburg is reserved to accommodate unusual functions and activities such as Blijburg, a temporary beach with its associated bars This temporary school, with a planned lifespan of 20 years, is intended to accommodate the forecast swell in the number of IJburg's schoolchildren The proposal involves a three-storey building with a wide, double-loaded central corridor The three entrances are located in the building's long elevation facing the schoolyard To harmonise the stacked prefabricated elements into a convincing building, the horizontal bands in the façade are strongly articulated The cantilevered strips also function as effective sun screens and shelter for the entrances They are finished with a sprayed rubber layer, white on the outside and with a different brightly coloured soffit per floor The colouring corresponds with the school's internal colour scheme By illuminating the bands at night, the building acts as a beacon in the neighbourhood photo: Luuk Kramer Contractor hvdn architecten Ursem Bouwgroep Stadsdeel Zeeburg hvdn-architecten 17

18 Waterdwellings IJburg Haringbuisdijk Amsterdam Building on water is another story altogether Water is not like land If you plan to build on water, you need to do so with respect for the unique nature of water Water is pioneering, water is adventure, danger, and relaxation, water lets you elude the rules of dry land Living on water also means views, movement, boat docked at home, romance, jetties, a sense of individuality, wind and clouds, space, contact with the elements, feeding swans from your kitchen, ice skating around your house? 19 Office Building the XXX-en Pedro Medinalaan XP Amsterdam BNB architects and B06 architects took the initiative in self-developing an office building for their own use Anyone who decides to join becomes commissioner and is therefore able to participate in decisions and buys condominium at cost A sturdy, industrial and no-nonsense building In the end the choice was made to rotate the window frames by about 45 degrees, crossed by diaphragm ribs creating a triangular pattern This grid covers the entire façade On a sunny day throughout the building an array of shadow-lines appears The only exception is a cut-out at ground level accommodating the entrance Because the diaphragm ribs are situated outside of the façade an exciting view of lines is shown, changing from every angle you look at it m² Main designer, bnb architecten BO6 architectenbureau HelleBeelden h only on request E: borski@b-n-bnl 12 minutes from Amsterdam central station with tram 26, stop Steigereiland 19

20 photo: Sylvia Russel photo: Daniela Paes Leao Het Blauwe Huis Wily Mullenskade KH Amsterdam As initiator of the brainstormproject Het Blauwe Huis ( The Blue House ) Jeanne van Heeswijk wanted to establish a house for culture and research into the development and evolution of history and experimental communities The Blue House is situated at the centre of Housing Block 35 on Ijburg Van Heeswijk invites artists, architects, thinkers, writers and scholars of various nationalities to live and work in The Blue House By actively involving others to their work, they create a cultural infrastructure around the house, with a continuous exchange between the inhabitants of Block 35 and the rest of IJburg Block 35 is one of the first IJburg sections The Blue House can therefore follow the development of IJburg and this new community up close This combination of location and a particular moment in time, coupled with the opportunity to be temporary residents of IJburg, offers participants an ideal platform for studying, acting on and co-designing its public space photo: Blauwe Huis Project is public! 2005 Atelier DUTCH Jo_van_der_Spek wednesday and saturday tram 26, stop at ruisrietstraat 20

21 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Luuk Kramer IJburg Block 14 Bert Haanstrakade DK Amsterdam Block 14 lies at a unique location within the Haveneiland grid, consisting of streets and closed blocks Due to the slight change of angle of the site, the block has a trapezium shape Taking into account the scant depth and the exceptionally positive conditions along the edges, it was logical to situate as many houses as possible along the banks and to allocate maximum openness to the inner area As a consequence, the houses profit fully from their situation on the IJ Water and also have a direct relationship with the more sheltered, semi-public inner area The court is connected to the quay via a spacious platform stairway The difference in height at the site offers the possibility of generating extraordinary transitions between public and private areas In addition to single-family dwellings with access to gardens, an unusual type of house has been introduced: the 'Zwebo', which is an abbreviation of the Dutch for 'floating single-family upstairs apartment' photo: Luuk Kramer m² Structural engineer Contractor DKV en ABT Smit's Bouwbedrijf IJ-Delta Ontwikkeling (Smit's Bouwbedrijf, Era Bouw, Bouwfonds, Ymere) DKV 21

26 Block 62 IJburg Ben van Meerendonkstraat Amsterdam The island of IJburg on the eastern outskirts of Amsterdam has a fairly neutral urban development plan, in which each of the approximately seventy blocks has its own character Block 62 is one of the few blocks composed solely of low-rise buildings: it consists of 96 ground-oriented, owner-occupied dwellings They have allied individual freedom for the occupants with a very urban design A city canal runs straight through the block, and makes a bend in the middle A considerable number of houses have direct access to the water via their own jetty: you literally step from your living room into your boat Arons & Gelauff HelleBeelden 26
