4 Situation Cantorist is situated in an unusually quiet location on the edge of the attractive village of Childrey, at the foot of the Lambourn Downs. It is approximately 3 miles to the west of Wantage which provides facilities for day to day needs, including a Waitrose. The villages of the Cotswolds are within easy range and the near-by towns of Hungerford, Oxford, Newbury and Swindon provide more comprehensive shopping and recreational facilities. The house overlooks the Vale of the White Horse to the north and its own land. Communications Communications are excellent with the M4 ( J14) lying about 13 miles to the south allowing easy access to London, Heathrow Airport and the M25 motorway network. Didcot is about 11 miles to the east providing a fast and regular train service to London (Paddington) taking about 45 minutes. Recreation There are many sporting activities in the area including; Hunting with The Old Berkshire Hunt and the Vale of the White Horse. Racing at Newbury. Golf at the West Berks Course at Chaddleworth or Frilford Heath. There is also good walking along The Ridgeway. Education There is great schooling in the area including The Abbingdon and Oxford schools. The Oxford schools include The Dragon, Summer Fields and Teddys. 5 History of the Property In 1368, Sir Edmund de Childrey (sic: de Chelrey) obtained a licence to construct a Chantry to the east of St Mary s Church, which became know as Cantorist. The oldest parts of the existing property are believed to date back to the late 15th century followed by later additions during the Tudor period, including a refectory hall, and the 18th century, including the larger of the two thatched barns. The east wing of the house is believed to have seen a replacement of the original timber frame in the early 20th century. It is believed from archaeological remains recorded on the site of Cantorist that a property existed before the 14th century but no records of the property remain. Fields owned to the west of Cantorist cover the foundations to Frethorne Manor which was built for the de Frethorne family who came to Childrey in the 12th century and one of whom, Geoffrey, is believed to be the crusader whose effigy lies in St Mary s Church from about In 1515 William Fettyplace, who lived in what is now Childrey Manor on the southern boundary and whose family then owned the lands of Cantorist, endowed the property to Queen s College, Oxford. The endowment included the support of three almsmen and the priest, all of whom lived at Cantorist where they held a free school initially only for boys. The priest was the schoolmaster and it survived as an educational endowment until 1723 when it was re-located to a new building nearby. The chantry itself was abolished in 1547 by an Act of Parliament. After 1723, Cantorist became a farm house. Corpus Christi College purchased the property in 1811, selling it in Later it was acquired by Balfour Gardner, the composer, who gave it to Liverpool Cathedral which sold it for their building fund in 1933 since when it has been in private hands. The property is of pre-eminent note in the area, and has acquired additional lands, most recently in 1997 when it acquired 45 acres of farm land from the Froud farming family, increasing its agricultural freehold to around 73 acres. In 1940, the artist Wilfred Fairclough ( ) painted a watercolour of the house which today is with the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (Museum number E ).

6 Cantorist Cantorist, listed Grade II, is constructed of brick and stone under a tiled roof. Many of the original features have been retained, including extensive oak and walnut roof timbers and doors, leading lights and stone mullioned windows. The house is well arranged having an area that forms a separate and independent guest wing, with its own entrance and central heating system, which comprises hall, sitting room, cloakroom, bathroom and two bedrooms. To the south east of the house, across the courtyard is The Tower, with further guest accommodation comprising 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms of which one is en suite, sitting room and kitchen. To the east of the house lies a magnificent thatched barn which has been converted into a games room, also suitable for entertaining.

8 Outbuildings To the east of the house lies a magnificent timber clad thatched barn. Internally this has been converted into a full height games/family room with a large open fireplace. There is a further extensive and well maintained range of useful outbuildings including a brick and stone building, with tiled roof, divided into three rooms which include a large boot room to one end and fuel store housing two oil tanks in the other. 9 Gardens and Grounds Cantorist is surrounded by beautiful mature walled gardens which provide a peaceful setting for the house. To the south and separating the house from The Tower is a parterre garden divided by stone paths and box hedges. Wide lawns to the north are flanked by well stocked herbaceous borders and rose beds and are divided by a mature yew hedge. The enclosed swimming pool is set in a paved surround with a concealed pump and boiler house. The hard tennis court is screened from the house by yew hedges and approached through the orchard and there is a screened car parking area away from the house. Equestrian Facilities To the west of the house lies the modern stable yard constructed of block under a tiled roof and incorporates five loose boxes, tack room, hay store and lean to. There is an option for an exercise track subject to planning permission.

Proceed north on the A338 towards Wantage and after about a third of a mile turn left signposted to Lambourn on the B4000.
