1 8 Tallet Copenhagen, Denmark BIG Architects The project is partly influenced by the classic townhouse but, instead of using the usual block formation, the assembly follows a layered orientation: the apartments and gardens are placed on top of commercial and trade layers, which provide services at the base of the building. to provide each units with an individualistic quality of their own, the 8 house is pulled up in the north east corner and pushed down in the south west, ensuring an ample amount of sunlight, fresh air, and views of kalvebod fælled. the figure eight configuration of the building creates a moment of synergy as well as two distinct spaces in the courtyard. a 500 m2 communal facility is placed at the centre of the intersection while a 9 meter wide passageway at the same point connects the two surrounding urban spaces outside of the residential project: the park to the west and the channels to the east. to maximize a sense of community for the future inhabitants, the architecture weaves the shared facilities throughout the whole building from ground level to roof. a system of gardens, trees and paths provide a branch of access points to these programs, ending at the 11 storey-high rooftop where you can enjoy a view of the Copenhagen Canal. 3 Site Plan and Location...the aim was to build a three-dimensional community even though the building is in the middle of nowhere, says Ingels. The nowhere is about 7 miles from the city center at the southern tip of Ørestad, a still somewhat barren district rising along a branch of Copenhagen s new metro line. 7 Floor Plans Level 0 Level 1 In order to create an architectural framework for the community the designers envisioned there, they based the 8 House scheme on the typology of a perimeter block, but squeezed it in the middle to form a bowtie shape that defines two courtyards. At the central knot, they created a 30-foot-wide passageway that connects the east and west sides of the site. They then layered the components of the program one on top of the other like a cake: Commercial uses, including retail space, a café, a day care center, and offices, are placed near the base, so that they can benefit from direct contact with the street, while the different types of apartments townhouses, flats, and penthouses are stacked above. 13 Views In and Out And in order to provide the residential units with daylight and views of marshes and grazing lands that sit directly to the south, they raised the building s northeast corner to 10 stories, sloping it to only one story at the diagonally opposite corner by stepping down each successive line of apart- ments

15 Green Roof The 8 House project won the 2010 Scandinavian Green Roof Award. The design was specifically commended for the way the green roofs have become a part of the buildings aesthetic as they slope down 11 stories towards the canal edge...the moss-sedum roof covers an extraordinarily long, steep and sloping roof surface descending 11 floors downward to the edge of a canal in Oerestad South opening up the interior courtyard to a view of the protected open spaces of Kalvebod Faelled... Green spaces upon the roof and within the courtyard are strategically placed to reduce the urban heat island effect as well as providing a visual relief to the inhabitants. 15
