4 DIRECTIONS From Edinburgh take the A90 north across the Forth Road Bridge. Leave the M90 at Junction 1 and take the A985 west towards the Kincardine Bridge. Culross is signposted on the left hand side after about 10 miles. Follow the road through Torryburn and Low Torry into Culross. Continue through the village. The gates to Balgownie Mansion House are beyond the village green, on the right hand side. Travelling from Stirling or Glasgow follow signs for the M876 which leads to the new Kincardine Bridge. Cross the bridge and take the turning on the right which leads through Kincardine. Culross is signposted on the right hand side. Follow the road into the village and turn sharp left at the village green to reach the impressive entrance to Balgownie Mansion House. SITUATION Balgownie Mansion House has a superb setting on the edge of the National Trust village of Culross. The property is set in 4.4 acres of its own south facing grounds overlooking the Firth of Forth, on a wooded bank to the west of the village. It is protected by a high stone wall along its front with beautiful entrances to both west (not used) and east. The views over the Firth of Forth, particularly from the upper floors, are outstanding. Culross Abbey was founded in 1217 when the village was an important religious centre. Culross is a conservation village which contains many buildings owned by the National Trust for Scotland. HISTORY James Erskine, brother of the 5th Lord Erskine, received a grant of lands on Balgownie from William Colville, Commendator of Culross Abbey, in Hannah Erskine, heiress of Balgownie, married into the Cunninghame family in John Erskine Cunninghame, provost of Culross for 42 years, lived at Balgownie until he died in Balgownie Mansion House was used by the Land Army in the 1950s and became a school in It closed in 2003 and the property was upgraded and converted back into a house.
