2 MAY SPEAKER NOTES Comparing Two Rock Art Sites in the Palen-McCoy Wilderness By Megan Galway Martìn Jespersen and George Kline described two rock art sites in the Palen-McCoy Wilderness northwest of Blythe in Riverside County. Kline introduced us to CA-RIV-980, which was recorded by Daniel McCarthy in 1980 and until this study was the only recorded site in the Palen Mountains. The site is about 60 m x 80 m in size, and the area had been occupied by a number of cultural groups over time and more recently was impacted by General George Patton s desert training. 3 June Speaker (continued from p. 1) MAY BOARD MEETING SUMMARY The Board reviewed the Scholarship Committee s recommendations and awarded the Gloria Bogdan Memorial Scholarship to Robert Baker, who will be transferring to CSU Fullerton in the fall. The Mrytle Soderberg Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Emily Smith, who is attending CSU Monterey Bay. Nathan Acebo is a Ph.D. candidate in the Stanford University Anthropology Department and the Stanford Archaeology Center, and he is the recipient of the Stanford University Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education Doctoral Fellowship. He received his MA in anthropology from Stanford, and his BS in anthropology with an emphasis on cultural resource management at Cal Poly Pomona. He has participated in various colonial/prehistoric archaeological and ethnographic research projects in the Mojave Desert, southern Channel Islands, San Francisco Bay Area, and the historic Chinatowns of San Jose, California. Research focuses include network analysis, lithic analysis, microscopy (use-wear), ethnogenic models, and dominance/resistance theory. Joe Hodulik has made arrangement for Dr. Dennis Jenkins, University of Oregon, to speak at our December meeting on his extended research at Paisley Caves. The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 pm. 3

5 PCAS APRIL FIELD TRIP By Steve Dwyer PCAS members recently explored historic and prehistoric sites in the Chuckwalla Valley. Several Native American sites with rock art were visited. A tenaja (a natural depression in rock which traps and holds water) was found, along with several trails converging on the area. The site of a religious cult from the 1960s 1970s was toured not much was left, but several streambed dams showed that water was a primary concern in this dry area. Standing stones, discussed at a recent conference, were an unusual discovery. These were tall, thin rocks standing on edge, clearly placed by humans. We saw three examples that were about 2 to 3 feet tall, plus several that appeared to have fallen. Who stood them up, and how long ago, would be difficult if not impossible to determine. 7 PCAS CODE OF ETHICS The Pacific Coast Archaeological Society (PCAS) is a nonprofit group of professional and avocational people dedicated to proper management of our cultural resources, public education, and the protection and preservation of archaeological materials and collections. The following principles have been adopted by the PCAS: 1. Professional methods and forms will be used on all archaeological field surveys, excavations, and laboratory sessions. 2. A complete record of field and laboratory work will be filed with the PCAS Curator and stored at a facility approved by the Society s Board of Directors. 3. No archaeological materials will be removed without proper permits, landowner permission, and a field research design. 4. Unless otherwise legally stipulated before activity commences, all materials collected will be deposited for further research with the Curator at a facility approved by the Society's Board of Directors. 5. All generated reports will be the property of the Society and distributed as deemed appropriate. 6. All Society field activities will be performed only under the direction of a qualified field archaeologist (Principal Investigator) and the supervision of field or site directors. 7. The above principles will be observed on both Society approved projects and projects performed under the direction of an authorized institution or organization. 8. The Society and its members will strive to educate the public of the importance and proper management of our non-renewable cultural resources and to discourage the collection and commercial exploitation of archaeological materials. 9. PCAS members shall not benefit from the acquisition, purchase, sale, or trade of archaeological artifacts, materials, or specimens. 10.
