2 Orvall Corporate Designs (OCD) was established in 2012 by Themba Orvall Maluleke, an entrepreneur with over 14 years of experience with various architectural firms in the built environment. As a senior architect for seven years at Total Facilities Management Company (now Bidvest Facilities Management) Themba oversaw the national development of Telkom stores in various retail centres around South Africa. Themba then started OCD, which quickly grew to become the preferred consultant for Bidvest Facilities Management on all Telkom projects. The company has also partnered with many national and multi-national companies in the construction of commercial buildings and space planning. OCD has an impeccable record in all fields of architectural designs and space planning. Its ambition is to explore new markets and trends, and to differentiate from its competitors by providing better services and solutions to its clientele base. 3 Themba Orvall Maluleke is a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual who has excelled in both his professional and academic careers. With over 14 years of experience in the built environment field, he has acquired a good understanding and an adaptable resolve when it comes to different work challenges. He has successfully produced project and maintenance plans, played a significant role in the maintenance of healthy and safe environments, and handled the creative solutions of various problems this industry has presented. He is motivated by finding solutions to the most challenging tasks and the ability to meet clients requirements at all times. 4 Themba s Employment History Themba s Employment History Qualifications: 2012 to Present: Orvall Corporate Designs PTY LTD, Centurion Branch I currently run a successful practice, doing mostly upmarket / estate housing, commercial, residential and educational facilities ranging from R1 million to R250 million. April 2008 to 2014: TFMC (Total Facilities Management Company) After working for Prism Architects, I needed a different form of experience and environment and I joined TFMC as an Architectural Consultant, Skilled Technician and Junior Manager. I hold a Diploma in Project Management and have completed projects at TFMC, while playing a role as a Principal Agent and Project Manager. I am currently mentoring our departmental personnel in Revit Architecture and have introduced various design processes and ways of modeling, and assist them on daily with basics and fundamental principles. This has enhanced our company s productivity and efficiency in managing drawings, and thus improved quality. Meanwhile, I continue to expand my knowledge and mentoring skills. As an Architectural consultant at TFMC, I was expected to produce the following outputs: Providing quality, relevant and responsive architectural service to customers in an efficient manner. Provide feasibility reports, sketch plans, line drawings according to customers brief to meet Projects SLA (time and budget compliance). Provide coordinated detailed designs, finishing schedules, materials, etc. in line with the budget. Compile tender drawings and specification documentation. Ensure that designs comply with Telkom and National Building Standards. Compile working drawings including details that are necessary for construction. Provide effective management of construction workers or contractors (site instructions and inspections), issue as built drawings and archive project file. Ensure customer satisfaction (internal and external). Ensure ongoing self and professional development. Live the RITCH values. February 2006 to May 2008: January 2005 to January 2006: Prism Architects, Polokwane In February, 2006 I was appointed as an Architectural Technologist and in August 2006 was promoted to a Senior Architectural Technologist. I implemented different forms of designs; introduced new technology which took the company to a different level of 3D presentations, animations and quality of drawings. This helped the company to produce drawings more efficiently and faster. We managed to build and improve our client base. Based on performance and quality of work I brought into the company I was the first to be nominated to produce documentation and design in projects that were over R1.5 billion. These include the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and we undoubtedly produced a world class stadium and years to come. My main responsibilities were to produce documentation or construction drawings, site visits, client interactions, administration, correspondence, submissions of drawings to the council, planning and organising, project coordination and management, feasibility study, tender evaluations and verification of bill of quantities in conjunction with architectural drawings. Alistair Hume Architects, Durban I joined Alistair Hume Architects and I was quickly offered a partnership in the company; I had already established a practice of my own and we became partners. Together we managed to develop hundreds of hectors of land in residential units across KwaZulu-Natal and we completed successful projects over the duration of our partnership. January 2004 to December 2005: EL Arch Architects, Polokwane E.L Arch Architects is a large firm based in Polokwane. My career at this point was starting to take form because of the motivation and desire to work my way to the top. I was handling projects from brief description to handover and doing documentation for health centres, sports grounds and educational facilities. January 2003 to December 2004: Marlowe Sheppen & Associates, Durban Marlowe Sheppen & Associates in Durban was a small firm of general architectural technicians and attorneys, where I was employed as a junior designer preparing drawings and sites visits for all legal liquor licensing buildings to be submitted to 2000: Giyani High School Grade 12 / Matric to 2003: Durban University of Technology N. 6 STANDARD SERVICES WE PROVIDE STAGE 1: INCEPTION Assist in developing a clear project brief Advise on the procurement policy for the project Advise on rights, constraints, consents and approvals Advise on the other consultants and services required Assist in defining the consultant s scope of work and services Determine availability of data, drawings and plans relating to the project Provide necessary information within the agreed scope of project to the other consultants Assist in developing a project programme STAGE 2: CONCEPT AND VIABILITY Agree on the documentation programme Prepare concept design based on the client s brief Consult with the other consultants and incorporate their input Discuss design concept with local authorities Clarify and confirm the project space norms to optimise functional and operational efficiency in terms of scale and relationships of area Co-ordinate design and cost interfaces with the other consultants Select general construction materials and intended finishes Prepare and submit the site development plan to the local authority for approval where applicable Liaise, co-operate and provide necessary information to the client and other consultants Review anticipated costs of the project Review project programme STAGE 3: DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Review the documentation programme with the other consultants Incorporate the client s detailed requirements into building design Incorporate and co-ordinate the other consultants designs into building design Liaise, co-operate and provide necessary information to the client, and other consultants Obtain detailed project-specific requirements of the local authority in order to ensure understanding thereof Prepare design development drawings (including draft technical details) and outline specifications Provide sufficient drawings and information to the quantity surveyor for the completion of detailed estimates of construction cost where applicable Review the design, costing and programme with the other consultants Confirm the scope and complexity Review the design and consult with local and statutory authorities Develop the design, construction system, materials and components Incorporate all services and the work of consultants STAGE 4: DOCUMENTATION AND PROCUREMENT Obtain client s authority to prepare and submit drawings to local authority for approval Prepare specifications for the works and agree preambles with the quantity surveyor when applicable Co-ordinate services and prepare necessary services co-ordination drawings Review cost estimate with the quantity surveyor Provide working drawings Liaise, co-operate and provide necessary information to the other consultants Complete construction documentation and proceed to call for tenders Obtain the client s authority to prepare documents to procure offers for the execution of the works Obtain offers for the execution of the works Evaluate offers and recommend on the award of the building contract Prepare the contract documentation (and arrange the signing of the building contract)

7 STAGE 5: CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT ADMINISTRATION Contract administration Hand over the site to the contractor Issue construction documentation Initiate and/or check sub-contract design and documentation as appropriate Inspect the works for conformity to the contract documentation Administer and perform the duties and obligations assigned to the principle agent Receive, comment and approve interim payment valuations Witness and review all tests and mock-ups carried out both on and off site Check and approve sub-contract shop drawings for design intent Update and issue the drawings register Issue contract instructions Review and comment on operations and maintenance manuals, guarantees, certificates and warranties Inspect the works and issue practical completion and defects lists Assist in obtaining statutory certificates STAGE 6: CLOSE OUT Inspect and verify rectification of defects Receive, comment and approve relevant payment valuations and completion certificates Prepare and procure operations and maintenance manuals, guarantees and warranties PROJECTS EXPERIENCE OCD has experience with institutional, civil buildings ranging from public safety facilities, city halls, college campus libraries, learning resource centres, hightech communication facilities, sports facilities, retail and leisure developments, office buildings and residential and healthcare facilities. 9 Residential Houses Category OCD believes architecture influences the way that we live. Good design should simplify the way we live and accommodate the demands of life. It should be functional and aesthetically pleasing. House Siweya The client wanted a new concept home but also with an acknowledgment of the natural environment. The Design The architectural design of this house was to blend in with the natural environment which offered our client an unparalleled standard of living. A masterpiece which brings a different image and feel to the home.

10 House Manganyi The client wanted a home that would look as good from the outside as it would from the inside. The Design House Manganyi is an exclusive architectural design project encompassing style and elegance. Beyond the property s gates lies a majestic world of unmatched serenity and refined sophistication. This masterpiece is truly a dream come true.

11 House Maluleke The client wanted upper level additions with a complete makeover. The Design With a complete transformation, the style of the home maximised the potential of the large site and captured a spacious and refreshed fourbedroom classic family home. The completed design was a successful new upper level integrating perfectly with looking like an add on. House Chavalala The client wanted a home that would exude modern style and flair. The Design OCD incorporated state-of-the-art design to revolutionise modern day living. The design takes to heart the essence of architecture designed for life and luxury.

12 Highlands College College environments have a direct and measurable impact on student and teacher performance. They allow students and teachers to take pride in their environment and education. Educational places must be designed to encourage learning. The goal was to create an environment that offers the students and teachers a sense of pride. In addition to satisfying the demands for a College, OCD envisioned a simple building design. The Design Value and sustainability were two important goals in determining the design of this facility. A simple building envelope allowed more teaching space. The spatial and interior design of the colours and graphics provided great visual interest.

13 RDP Homes Building a house is more than walls, windows and doors. It s a home, it s a place of comfort and peace. To design a low cost and environmentally friendly home and to help improve the social, economic, environmental and health outcomes of low income families and individuals living in the City of Ekurhuleni Municipality. The Design The design was cost-effective and focused on saved energy consumption. Concrete exterior walls served as heat shields, delaying heat energy from penetrating into the homes during hot weather conditions. OCD was environmentally conscious in terms of design including the use of solar panels in the design. Themba Clinic in Hammanskraal and Vosloorus Clinic in JHB In a medical facility, everyone is working toward the same result, the medical staff are all working cohesively to offer holistic coverage for healthcare needs. OCD s goal was to optimise workflow, streamline staff and increase safety. Using such principles, we designed and constructed a process to help our clients improve their own work process through design. To create a clinic that reflects the heritage of the community. The Design The design team integrated sustainable practices to support the clinic s commitment to environmental stewardship. An integrated delivery model created an open book process with success and recognition for all.

14 High Rise Residential Apartments (Germiston and Delville) Every space is a possibility waiting to happen. With the high rise residential apartments in Germiston and Delville, OCD helped transform the old into the new. We created apartments with character and purpose. The designers were faced with the challenge of creating a cohesive whole by using a variety of design options. The Design The new development featured a mix of bachelor, one bedroom and two bedroom units in a multi-story building featuring a structure that complemented the look as a whole. Telkom Shops Capability, continuity, contentment and collaboration are just some of the results when great design is completed in a corporate environment. This not only provides employees with a space to work together, to explore ideas and grow but it also presents the company with an opportunity to excel. Telkom SA SOC Ltd. is a wireline and wireless telecommunications provider in South Africa and operates in more than 38 countries across the African continent.

15 The Design The design contains an open floor plan. This open space encourages employees to interact, thus promoting teamwork and a collaborative work environment. The entire store was highlighted with a clean, high-tech look for a growing high-tech mobile company. The client wanted to re-define their facility so that not only was the Telkom brand reflected but also increase workplace quality and efficiency.

16 Corporate Social Investment Orvall Corporate Designs vision is to give back to the community and to eradicate poverty through education and community upliftment. Our career development project empowers people to become employed and this changes people s lives. We seek to help those living in poverty and donating school shoes was just one of the many ways we have given back. OCD proudly donated over 60 pairs of Toughees school shoes to the less fortunate children of Ka-Rivala, a rural village in Limpopo. These children have never had the opportunity to wear a new pair of school shoes for the first day of school but OCD made it possible. In-service Training OCD offered in-service training to the architectural students of University of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Inscape College.
