Art & Architecture St Leo s College Entry: Ferrier Baudet Architects This insertion at the entrance to St Leo's College on the University of Queensland campus generates a relationship and threshold between inside and outside that connotes both continuity and reflection, enriching the Christian Brother's ethos and values. Entitled 'Correlate', the work expresses Lincoln Austin's artwork with integrity while equally maintaining the existing modest 1950s architecture. The Lantern, My Own Private Neon Oasis: Donovan Hill The Lantern is a collaboration between the architects and Museum of Brisbane curator Louise Rollman with the artist-run initiative Box Copy. It is a car park roof-top located temporary structure that has multiple roles and interpretations in its suburban, largely Asian context, and was clearly very successful. ST JOHN AMBULANCE: TONIC A whimsically composed 'dress-up' of the innocuous long-standing premises of St John Ambulance, this scheme simultaneously asserts the relevance and presence of the organisation, and expresses its accessibility and vitality. A clever initiative well considered and executed. Art & Architecture Prize presented to: St Leo s College Entry: Ferrier Baudet Architects 1

Commercial Architecture JCU Queensland Tropical Health Alliance Research Laboratory: SKM-S2F A very simple and honest translation of user requirements into an alternative typology from existing campus buildings. Well resolved internal laboratory functions and spaces provide for highly effective research and testing of important biological work for tropical Queensland and beyond. Park Avenue Hotel, Rockhampton: TVS architects This refurbishment and expansion is commendable both for its owner s commitment and its architect s interpretation of town and country. It is a type of project that in many other cities often has little architectural merit but which here generates a strong sense of community and vitality. River Quay: Arkhefield River Quay is a commercial success both due to the quality of restaurants it has attracted and to the diversity of dining settings it offers within a distinct and cohesive overall collective. It generates intimate experience for dining as well as potent civic scale through its soaring roofscapes, and it materially and spatially enriches its river and garden setting. Engine Room Offices: Aspect Design Studios Pty Ltd Assertive, confident contemporary architecture adding a final layer to a series of historic sheds. The new building is spatially well modulated while the sheds delightfully preserve their handmade character. Some intimate inside-outside interfaces are also of interest. Energy Rockhampton Skills Training Facility: Lend Lease Design with Architectus in collaboration This project recycles Rockhampton s disused Powerhouse, particularly its Turbine Hall, to create a rich layering of old and new industrial fabric. The adaptation has created legible and efficient working areas imparted with a strong sense of identity and cohesion. The interior adaption and detail for the main historic building is particularly noteworthy. RFDS Mount Isa Base Redevelopment: Architectural Practice Academy This project is regarded as making a major contribution to creating identifiable architecture in Mount Isa. In its siting and response to context, its spatial configuration and its detailing, it unites its functions into a cohesive whole. In a relatively austere environment, the architects have created a strong sense of place and of purpose, generating a wonderful user, patient and visitor experience. Beatrice Hutton Award for Commercial Architecture presented to: River Quay: Arkhefield

Enduring Architecture Pie Residence, Peregian Beach Qld: Geoffrey Pie Architects The Pie Residence today is remarkably unchanged from 1986 when it received the Robin Boyd Award for residential architecture. Its modesty of material and form and its reticence of expression are striking. It possesses both restraint and purpose closely tailored to its coastal setting and to the changing needs over time of an extended family. The ease of beachside living is facilitated through the deft interrelationship of internal and external spaces. It is a masterly work that continues to be a house in the spirit of Robin Boyd as cited by the 1986 Jury. Enduring Architecture Award presented to: Pie Residence, Peregian Beach Qld: Geoffrey Pie Architects Heritage Windsor Stone Cottage: Owen and Vokes Involving a client who stripped unsympathetic paintwork from the old stone cottage to retrieve its original fabric, this project embodies the ethos of the Burra Charter and creates an expanded house where old and new richly complement each other. State Award for Heritage presented to: Windsor Stone Cottage: Owen and Vokes

Interior Architecture Harveys Bistro: Riddel Architecture This modest budget renovation project is successful in achieving a new simple engaging interior filled with natural light. The architects carefully and skillfully reworked the space to heighten the casual dining experience that the café was traditionally well known for, without alienating their existing loyal clientele. A series of insertions capitalises on the outlook and produces varied dining experience. QUT Library Upgrade Kelvin Grove: Peddle Thorp and James Cubitt Architects A sympathetic and appropriately restrained addition to a classic John Andrews / John Simpson University building with a surprising interior that creates multiple student study and social spaces. Eatons Hotel and Function Centre: KP Architects Although not externally spectacular other than its enfolding of a large dramatic fig tree, the hotel s sequence of bars and lounges is spectacular and materially rich. A wonderful translation of sophisticated design which attracts an extremely wide demographic. 385 St Pauls Terrace: Reddog Architects Pty Ltd This workplace renovation is modelled on the notion of communal home with spaces designed to be analogous to kitchen hearth, living room and retreat. A clerestory atrium bathes the office in daylight, overcoming landlocked site constraints, invigorated by interesting contrasts between inserted furniture, lighting and base materials. Mansergh Shaw Level 5, The University of Queensland: m3architecture This project is an added floor on top of an existing building in which perimeter structure and displacement air-conditioning and services in an access floor, have enabled the designers to create a fluid work environment. Deep sculpted ceiling ribs, each different, reflect light to the interior and angled glazing creates the impression of top floor lookout. Stokehouse: Arkhefield Described as a Queensland interpretation of the original St. Kilda restaurant, the Stokehouse comprises a bar and lounge, dining room, mezzanine function space and outdoor decks that masterfully embrace the river edge. A layered, battened wall undulates through the space distinctly defining this restaurant s subtropical character. Esquire Restaurant: HASSELL Esquire is a seemingly effortless solution to brief requirements for three different types of dining area casual, fine and private to be directly served by food preparation spaces that contribute definitively to the dining experience. Their solution makes positive use of existing structure and new insertions to create a sequence of elegant and intriguing dining spaces. Mike Ahern Centre: Project Services The interior design of this comprehensive Government workplace has created a relaxed stimulating environment that perfectly befits the Sunshine Coast. Its legibility of functions is matched by a fluidity of spaces that is delightful to experience.

Queensland University of Technology H Block: Suters Architects The concept of this renovation is described as a secret garden inspired by the small brick building s location hidden among larger campus buildings. It does this successfully and is a distinctly non-institutional conversion which preserves much of the building s history and patina, with some wonderful photography forming translucencies to glazed screens. State Awards for Interior Architecture presented to: (i) QUT Library Upgrade Kelvin Grove: Peddle Thorp and James Cubitt Architects (ii) Mansergh Shaw Level 5, The University of Queensland: m3architecture (iii) Stokehouse: Arkhefield G.H.M. Addison Award for Interior Architecture presented to: Eatons Hotel and Function Centre: KP Architects

Public Architecture UQ Fitness and Aquatic Centre: Architectus A simple idea of surrounding a pool with disciplined structure is enriched by its consistent materiality, detailing and texture. Distinctly modernist architecture well fitted to its rural context. Park Lake State School: Suters Architects Funded by the Federal Government s Building the Education Revolution, this multipurpose hall is elegantly designed and well sited to revitalise the school s identity. It provides excellent ability to open up the hall and provides equally good daylight accessibility to enhance its multifunctional qualities. St Clare s Catholic School, Tully, Performance Arts Centre: Total Project Group Architects An admirable salvaging of an existing facility, rather than employing an easier new expansion solution, to successfully condense and energise the school. Multi purpose performance and arts functions combine with creating a frame for school fetes and other uses that more than optimise this project s modest budget. The David Theile Olympic Swimming Pool, The University of Queensland: m3architecture A project noteworthy for its symbolism and reality of flood recovery following the 2011 devastation to Brisbane. Cleverly delineating the level of the flood, the new roofed pavilions delightfully reflect passing external activities to the pool space and vice versa. Robina Hospital Expansion: BVN Architecture A major redevelopment for the Gold Coast Health Services District, the expansion strikes an appropriate balance between operational efficiency and healthcare environment for patients and staff. The architecture is elegant and refined, with gardens and rooftop terraces enhancing social and relaxation opportunities. University of Queensland Ipswich Auditorium: Wilson Architects Asked to add what is effectively a large, normally closed box to a highly articulated, historic campus, the architects have created a masterful response. The masonry modulation, the interstitial public space between new and old, the transparency into the auditorium and the vivid green glass frontage are beautifully composed around a new campus courtyard. Magnetic Island Solar Park, part of Townsville Queensland Solar City project, Australian Government, Solar Cities: Insideout Architects This is an outstanding undertaking which a) generates substantial energy; b) involves a passionate community; c) makes an existing community facility significantly more amenable and healthy; and d) unites disparate facilities into a cohesive whole. While Tania Dennis rightly deserves design credit, the jury would like to acknowledge Ergon Energy, Glynn Tucker Engineers and the Magnetic Island community and artists as vital participants. Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre Collins Avenue: Charles Wright Architects A courageous and radical departure from classic crafted and lightweight Queensland Visitor Centres, this alternative approach to environmental fit has clearly generated a potent sense of place and user delight. Exhibits both outstanding working and visitor environments within a clear sustainability ethos.

Public Architecture (continued) Caboolture Hub: Peddle Thorp + James Cubitt Architects A centre for local culture, art, history, learning and social interaction, the building creatively earns its title hub. The planning is legible yet fluid, the building connects multiply to the city, and the spaces facilitate both defined and adaptive uses. Hervey Bay Community Centre: BAC Group Architects The architects have worked closely with the local Council and community groups over an extended period, and the centre clearly answered their needs as evident by utilisation by many community groups. Architecture tailored to community want. Marist College Science Centre, Ashgrove: bureau^proberts Although a departure from campus massing and material tradition, this undulating linear building significantly elevates the discipline of science to students and staff, while also creating exceptional external space. Generated from a highly legible diagram and architectural purpose. Metricon Stadium: Populous The new 25,000 seat stadium is unusually vibrant and exuberant for a major sport facility, responsive to the Gold Coast and its lifestyle. It has strong ESD credentials including 20% of its energy provided by roof-integrated solar photovoltaic cells, and will be a distinctive venue for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. State Commendations for Public Architecture presented to: (i) The David Theile Olympic Swimming Pool, The University of Queensland: m3architecture (ii) Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre Collins Avenue: Charles Wright Architects State Awards for Public Architecture presented to: (i) Robina Hospital Expansion: BVN Architecture (ii) University of Queensland Ipswich Auditorium: Wilson Architects F.D.G. Stanley Award for Public Architecture presented to: Caboolture Hub: Peddle Thorp + James Cubitt Architects

Residential Architecture Houses Four-Room Cottage: Owen and Vokes An inspired translation of a traditional four room cottage into a six-room one, with a perimeter circulation spine providing access to multiple service spaces, kitchen and external rooms which devolves into a series of garden terraces. Deftly crafted joinery, ingenious devices and unexpected light shafts complete this small but richly layered house. Montville Residence: Sparks Architects This house is well described by the architects as a simple pavilion of rational planning and structure in which varying depths of bush view form the backdrop to daily patterns of life. The architecture is characterised by its draped roof that opens the long elevations up on both sides, and described as plywood bird s nests over the rainwater tanks exemplify creative forms of occupation Currimundi Beach House: Loucas Zahos Architects This beachfront house comprises a series of pavilions of varied scale and role in transitioning from street to beach. The pavilions are dissected by a rammed earth wall that defines the circulation spaces. A part canvas roof, motif punctuated screens and convex shaped Ritek panels are part of an intriguingly different beach house typology. Flinders: Base Architecture A deceptively spacious house that reinterprets the Brighton beach house into a contemporary idiom akin to a new vernacular. Removal of carparking to the rear facilitates re-engagement with the public realm at the front, with a rear men s shed making the fullest out of a narrow site. Karboora: O'Neill Architecture This new Point Lookout house offers a new take on beach vernacular, marrying it with Japanese influences in construction and structure. Cohesive overall, the house provides relaxing and intimate living environments. Chelmer Pool House: Owen and Vokes This house revolves its existing, new interior and exterior spaces around a retained but redefined pool, hence its name. However, the design offers much more in terms of spatial connections and intimacy, with transitions subtly realised to enrich their value. Rosalie Residence: Richard Kirk Architect The Rosalie Residence constructs a platform for family life atop an inner suburban hillside. The volumetric extrusion focuses on a magnificent city view with telescopic precision, while its veiled flank offers a filtered a view towards the domestic scenery of nearby hill-slopes. Exquisite detailing and a sophisticated palette have made this house into a highly refined artefact. Highgate Hill House: Jeremy Salmon Architect A quite remarkable transformation of a dilapidated 1920s two-bedroom timber house into a two level house full of light and space, characterised by intriguing plays on historic vocabulary.

Residential Architecture Houses (continued) Fig Tree Pocket House 2: Plazibat & Jemmott Architects Fig Tree Pocket House 2 sits anchored into a north-east facing slope amongst suburban bushland. A simple organisational structure choreographs memorable experiences that elevate domestic life to the realm of the poetic. The pervasive horizontality of its landscape connections is heightened by the contrasting verticality of the linear, bamboo lined light well. Surf Residence: Paul Uhlmann Architects A spatially courageous house with uncompromised geometric insertions, this residence utilises materials in ways that characterise inside as outside, and vice versa. Nothing shy about its character, it hopefully has clients of similar ilk. Advaita Way: Paul Robertson Architects Advaita Way looks somewhat foreboding from a distance though is anything but up close and inside. Its wrapping in black mesh allows its owners to open the house to the elements all year, its spaces flow seamlessly and its material restraint only enriches its experience a real find. Pool House: Bark Design Architects A residence of understated yet palpable coastal aesthetic, this holiday house draws on the beach shack typology married to a soaring interior space aligned to a linear pool. Water from the pool reflects into this space such that its ephemeral qualities enrich the vacation experience. Warran: Base Architecture In this beach lifestyle house, the upper and lower levels are designed to function as separate dwellings. It is spatially rich and diverse, with openings beautifully crafted to optimise sense of space and of view, and offering seductive daylight qualities in the interior. Sunbrite Residence: BGD Architects Adjacent to another new house entered in this year s awards, this house contrasts in stretching the length of the site such that it comprises two bridge-linked 2 storey pavilions. Clearly delighting the owners, the house has a crisp interplay between its forms and materials. Satou House: Arkhefield Satou House is an exploration of integrating a meditative and tranquil lifestyle into a house inserted into steep and challenging terrain. The house forms a kind of large cocoon with courtyards, gardens and water woven into the volume. HP Tree House: mmp architects A house which cleverly engages its rainforest shroud from every room and interstitial space. Its unassuming exterior belies a sequence of varied scaled interior spaces that embody relaxed tropical lifestyle in all possible weather conditions. AZURIS: Renato D Ettorre Architects Forming a pair with last year s winner of the Robin Dods Award for Residential Architecture Houses, Solis, on Hamilton Island, Azuris embodies a tropical ethos utilising heavy materials to frame spectacular views and to cacoon living and sleeping spaces interspersed by courtyards. The project unites modernist spatial principles with exceptional craftsmanship.

Residential Architecture Houses (continued) Tinbeerwah Residence: Richard Kirk Architects This expansive Sunshine Coast hinterland residence for an international owner is in one sense imposing and in another balanced with the scale of the setting. It comprises exterior and interior skins that frame the interior spaces, these expressed like installations which produce the dramatic scale for living. An uncompromised design with beautiful detail and materiality. State Commendations for Residential Architecture - Houses presented to: (i) Karboora: O'Neill Architecture (ii) Chelmer Pool House: Owen and Vokes (iii) Rosalie Residence: Richard Kirk Architect State Awards for Residential Architecture - Houses presented to: (i) Montville Residence: Sparks Architects (ii) Currimundi Beach House: Loucas Zahos Architects (iii) Advaita Way: Paul Robertson Architects Robin Dods Award for Residential Architecture - Houses presented to: Four-Room Cottage: Owen and Vokes

Residential Architecture Multiple Housing Viridian Noosa Stage 3: JMA Architects The final stage of the Viridian Village community is maintained within the boundary of wildlife corridors, also providing pedestrian connectivity to national park and neighbouring communities. It is recognisable for its stated originating idea of an Alpine Village by the sea, and is laid out and manifest in ways which are remarkable for conserving an intimate beach culture ethos over many dwellings. Pier at Waterfront Newstead: Mirvac Design Albeit comprising expensive and exclusive luxury apartments only, these two low scale riverfront buildings are rigorously detailed and spatially orchestrated to optimum effect, within a restrained and elegant architectural language. Fitzgibbon Core Apartments: Arkhefield A Brisbane Housing Company project that forms a frontage to Brisbane s Fitzgibbon Urban Development Area (UDA). The scheme breaks down a relatively large complex into six connected blocks each of different architectural expression and character. King's College Centenary Building: Wilson Architects A remarkable transformation and expansion of an existing college where old and new are barely detectable. Very clever unit plans combine with robust elements that withstand male college lifestyles, with exterior gardens changed in level to optimise the college s amenity. The Oracle: DBI Design Pty Ltd The Oracle comprises two towers of a scale typical of the heart of the Gold Coast, but are cleverly sculpted and treated. The relationship of the apartments to the fluid exterior geometry is equally intriguing. State Award for Residential Architecture Multiple Housing presented to: King's College Centenary Building: Wilson Architects Job & Froud Award for Residential Architecture - Multiple Housing presented to: Viridian Noosa Stage 3: JMA Architects

Small Project Architecture Real Studio: Murphy s Creek BNT: Queensland University of Technology This project is at one level a wonderful symbol of community renewal as well as a superb program for QUT students to experience the making of a building. But it is also more than that it is a marvellous jewel of architecture both compositionally and functionally. Mountford Road House: Shaun Lockyer Architects Despite adding only 40m2 to an existing 1950s residence, the architects have created a richness of spatial layering, retaining much of the original character and optimising daylight penetration, external courtyard and garden edges. National School Pride - Cannon Hill State School: Donovan Hill A thoroughly successful editing and recalibrating of an existing elevated Queenslander classroom building based upon the school Principal s familiarity with Reggio Emilig in Italy, a world leading Early Childhood Centre. A project of obvious synergy between client and architect delivering a non-obvious way to share trust between young pupils and their mentors. Super Whatnot: Marc&Co in collaboration with Nielsen Workshop Described in its submission as attempting to put a pair of shoes on the casual barefoot bar culture of the Sunshine State this laneway bar in an abandoned loading dock offers wellcrafted spaces and details engaging the street and cocooning its delighted partners. North Maleny House: Stephen Cameron An extension to an existing house which, like a few other houses in the Sunshine Coast in particular, offers exceptional value for money and spatial richness simultaneously. Apart from enabling its owners to engage with the landscape, it enriches the existing dwellings spaces, and is refreshing as a masonry and timber articulated typology. 28 Smith on Raff: Gilda Donegan Architect One of the more replete of this year s adaptations and extensions of an existing house, resulting in highly resolved connections, and new and refurbished spaces. External architecture is also exemplary in new meeting old, and outdoors spaces form seamless extensions to the interior realm. State Awards for Small Project Architecture presented to: (i) Real Studio: Murphy s Creek BNT: Queensland University of Technology (ii) Super Whatnot: Marc&Co in collaboration with Nielsen Workshop Hayes & Scott Award for Small Project Architecture presented to: National School Pride - Cannon Hill State School: Donovan Hill

Sustainable Architecture 385 St Pauls Terrace: Reddog Architects Pty Ltd A reconfiguration of a 1980s office building which is sympathetic to the old is already inherently sustainable via recycling. Multiple energy and water efficiency systems and passive design insertions such as a central atrium significantly enhance the ESD credentials. Viridian Village Outrigger Resort: JMA Architects Viridian Outrigger is a linear resort running north-south through a valley. Its sense of place is largely derived from landscape fingers which penetrate into the built environment, the buildings equally generating an enriched quality of building and landscape integration. Advaita Way: Paul Robertson Architects This house achieves sustainable design in ways that are not only particular to residential design but adaptable to other building typologies. The key element is a composition of dual skins one glass and one a semi-permeable layer of mesh screening. With no airconditioning and several specific ESD initiatives, the house exhibits sound sustainability principles. Mike Ahern Centre: Project Services This new Government office building not only achieves 6 Star Green Star by design rating, but is highly expressive architecturally of its environmental strategies. It has strong evidence of results to date. Sheepstation Gully Environmental Learning Centre: SKM-S2F Conceived under the national Local Schools Working Together initiative, this centre s curvilinear plan is site-generated but in practice highly effective, especially in illustrating to school children how different orientations interact climatically. Straw bale and trombe walls exemplify different skin types, and an interactive web display enhances interpretation and monitoring of performance. State Commendation for Sustainable Architecture presented to: 385 St Pauls Terrace: Reddog Architects Pty Ltd State Awards for Sustainable Architecture presented to: (i) Mike Ahern Centre: Project Services (ii) Sheepstation Gully Environmental Learning Centre: SKM-S2F Harry S. Marks Award for Sustainable Architecture presented to: Viridian Village Outrigger Resort: JMA Architects

Urban Design Viridian Village Outrigger Resort: JMA Architects This project is exemplary in the way that it wends sensitively through its dense forest and plantation remnant, the village gaining vigour and social interaction from tight winding lanes and peaceful nodes and its architecture responding to the setting in a richly varied articulation. Cross River Rail Detailed Feasibility Study: HASSELL A rigorous study of the potentials of the Cross River Rail system and its experience above and below ground. The abundant problems are translated into strong solutions, with natural light penetration, generous scale and place identity offering ways to lift the experience in train travel. River Quay: Arkhefield & Cardno S.P.L.A.T. A multivalent experience - ranging from a concave grassed and terraced amphitheatre park to three restaurants interconnected but different, convertly engaging the river edge, the others overtly embracing the public promenade but all seducing patronage to the spaces internal and external. Noosa Junction Station: Bark Design Architects This project is more than a new transport hub for buses, but a community resource for cyclists and pedestrians forming a new Noosa meeting precinct. Its architectural language could belong to any beachside area, but somehow is also emblematic of Noosa. Cairns City Centre Master Plan: Architectus An aspirational document which seeks largely to return Cairns CBD to its status as Australia s definitive tropical city. It combines an overall cohesive framework within a series of small achievable projects to facilitate realistic implementation. The Oracle: DBI Design Pty Ltd A dual tower project entered in two categories, The Oracle departs from comparable projects in scope in Surfers Paradise by very successfully introducing a street through the block as distinct from pedestrian arcades and the like. This strategy activates the edges and gives breathing space to the towers which are sculpturally dramatic. GCRT 2031 (Gold Coast Rapid Transit Corridor Study): HASSELL The GCRT Study is a comprehensive and exciting series of strategies devised to integrate the new light rail system with sustainable urban development and space. It contains strong critical appraisal and ethos, and is well-illustrated and digestable. State Commendation for Urban Design presented to: Noosa Junction Station: Bark Design Architects State Awards for Urban Design presented to: (i) Viridian Village Outrigger Resort: JMA Architects (ii) The Oracle: DBI Design Pty Ltd Karl Langer Award for Urban Design presented to: River Quay: Arkhefield & Cardno S.P.L.A.T.
