1 2009 BRISBANE REGIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARDS REGIONAL COMMENDATIONS AND CITATIONS Friday 22 May Awards Jury Director: Justin O Neill FRAIA ART AND ARCHITECTURE CATEGORY #1846 International Terminal Brisbane Expansion: BVN Architecture Exploring ideas of transience and movement, these perceptually engaging works offer surprising and delightful interruptions to the ubiquity of the airport experience for the traveler. They are inspired by a strong curatorial vision and supported by considered integration with the building. #3133 Mater Mother s Redevelopment Project (A) Mater Mother s Hospital (MMH); (B) Mater Adult Hospital (MAH): BVN Architecture The Mater has taken a dynamic approach to the inclusion of art in public buildings. The architects, curators and clients have found opportunities for interactive, built-in and wall-hung works; and the involvement of a range of stakeholders. The result is a multidimensional collection that supports the building s function as a health facility. 1

2 SMALL PROJECT ARCHITECTURE CATEGORY #6320 Brookes Street Office North: James Russell Architect This is a poetic, adventurous excursion into a tough urban realm. The architect uses his own office to explore new frontiers which question perceptions of enclosure and workplace in the sub-tropics. It offers an unusually visceral and sensual experience, with a simple and earthy palette. #7280 Green House: aardvark architects This is a modest, surprising and poetic extension seamlessly integrated within a garden sanctuary. The design challenges preconceptions of enclosure and demonstrates a sophisticated and economical use of material and detail. Owned, designed and built by the architect, a feeling of joy is manifested throughout. #9792 TONIC Studio: TONIC Architecture + Design This refurbishment of an industrial building engages thoroughly with the street. The levels have been cleverly manipulated to provide both openness and privacy. The workplace provides a simple and effective backdrop to the street activation. 2

3 URBAN DESIGN CATEGORY #3456 Inner Northern Busway: INB HUB Alliance / BVN Architecture This project demonstrates the potential for alliance partnerships to provide well resolved architecture. Although mostly underground, the public benefits extend to the street, delivering greater amenity to the city while extending the transport network. The Bicycle Centre also represents a leap in the city s ambitions for transport alternatives. Finishes and detailing mean this is a sophisticated solution providing permanence and urbanity. #4724 The Subtropical Row House: Centre for Subtropical Design, QUT The process incorporating multiple practitioners and disciplines, as well as industry and authority involvement produced a vehicle for wider discussion about issues of climate, place, sprawl and resources beyond the individual designs. The Centre for Subtropical Design is encourage to continue to develop vehicles for community engagement, such as this. 3

4 SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE CATEGORY #4897 Green Square Office Precinct: Cox Rayner Architects This mixed-use project achieved both the 5 Star Green Star Office Design and Office As Built certified rating for the South Building and the 6 Star Green Star rating for the North Tower. The careful selection of internal finishes and the rigorous waste management regime and cogeneration facility are notable. #4457 Queensland State Archives Expansion Project (QSA2): Project Services The extension marks the transition from a building planned for storage to one planned for people with storage areas neatly contained in expressed masonry boxes wrapped by daylight flooded corridors. The use of natural materials, extensive water recycling, lighting controls and energy efficient plant with off-peak cold water storage are admirable. 4

5 HERITAGE ARCHITECTURE CATEGORY #2061 All Saints Church: Riddel Architects This very early 1862 Church has undergone significant conservation of its fabric as part of an ongoing program of maintenance. The work covered the reconstruction of the stone bellcote, stone repair, preservation of the entry portico stone copings and improved drainage at the base of the Church. 5

6 INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE CATEGORY #5240 Iceworks Bar and Restaurant: BASE Architecture Iceworks is a successful re-interpretation of what it means to eat, drink and really live in subtropical Brisbane. Flexible spaces collocate and cater for formal and informal entertainment, suiting all manner of clientele. #5859 Brisbane North Eye Centre: msarchitecture The transformation of the old Dawn picture Theatre into an eye theatre and day surgery has challenged traditional perceptions by deinstitutionalising healthcare environs. The plush, elegant spaces are simultaneously theatrical and serene and successfully juxtaposes a sense of irony with functionality and context. #5742 Wickham Street Apartment: BASE Architecture This is a modest project that makes much of what was originally an unremarkable space. The interior answers the environmental questions set by its location while maintaining and emphasising the original building fabric. This project exhibits a thoughtful manipulation of limited space to the benefit of the client. #2241 The University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research: Jackson / S2F Architectural Joint Venture A masterful and rigorous handling of a complex building type. The three principle planning elements of research laboratories, staff work areas and breakout space are integrated with a clear concern for the amenity of the research staff. The overall planning is coherent, the detailing simple and meticulous. 6

7 #6584 HASSELL Warry Street Studio, Fortitude Valley, QLD: HASSELL Airy collaborative spaces defined by framed vistas and flooded generously with daylight are delightfully supported by the interstitial spaces. The loggia accentuates the courtyard, the corridor houses the library, framed partitions morph into seating areas. The interior of Hassell Studio has an alluring serenity not often found in office environments. #4759 O Neill Building Nudgee College: Fairweather Proberts Architects Pty Ltd This is a clever conversion of a dormitory building into a new Middle School facility accommodating years 5 to 7. The smart, simple planning strategy maximizes space usage and provides efficient functional clusters of classrooms. Plywood joinery is complimented by a robust materials and colour palette. #7466 University of Queensland, Science Learning Centre: m3architecture The Science Learning Centre is an interactive space in a unique setting. This is an engaging fit out that mediates both the landscape and the scientific contexts within which it is sited. #1995 Abigroup House Stanley Street Plaza: Cox Rayner Architects in association with John Mainwaring The interior of Abigroup House is all about collaboration creating an environment that brings to fruition the clients emphasis upon the collaborative workplace. An obviously close relationship between architect, builder and sub contractor, brings a high level of resolution to deft and considered detailing. 7

8 RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE MULTIPLE HOUSING CATEGORY #1205 Lady Bowen Stage 3 Studio Units: Gall & Medek Architects Pty Ltd This building successfully integrates design and planning with low maintenance materials and robust detailing. Circulation, natural light and ventilation are generously created by an internal street. The end result is an environment which will considerably enhance the tenant s quality of life. #5238 Youngcare: Cox Rayner Architects Also received the John Dalton Award for Building of the Year This building seamlessly blends support facilities for assisted care occupants with adaptable airy, light filled communal spaces. A clever integration of donated construction materials, results in a new benchmark for socially responsible architecture. #6092 Key Street Townhouses: Gall & Medek Architects Pty Ltd This building is a refreshing rethink of the cost driven townhouse. Individual entrances off the central pedestrian street give residents a sense of individual address and foster interaction. Simple and raw material selection and detailing demonstrate a commitment to sustainability both in the construction and ongoing life cycle of the building. #8681 Norman Reach: Cox Rayner Architects The skilful use of site topography and the staggering of built form allows a series of well scaled buildings to sit comfortably amongst the adjacent riverside residences and busy Wynnum Road. This strategy enables broad city views from each of the finely crafted villas, apartments and detached residences. 8

9 RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE - HOUSES CATEGORY #2576 Cremorne Extension: Donovan Hill Impacting minimally on the existing house and surrounds, this sculptural two storey pavilion extension is a fine exemplar for updating a heritage house for contemporary family life. With strident architectural language it makes a new landscape on the desirable northern hillside edge of the site to encourage informal, intimate, shaded and joyous occupation. #3362 Fig Tree Pocket River House: Bligh Graham Architects Also awarded House of the Year This house employs stepped sectional and courtyard planning techniques as a response to the difficult and conflicting site constraints. The sequential planning and spatial arrangements integrate the home with its site and progressively reveal views to the river. The finished design is a comfortable and well-considered family home. #9980 Grandstand House: PUSH This home engages with the surrounding community as a camp site might. The living area is a space that can change to suit one s mood; it can be a generous verandah inviting Perry Park in or a cosy cocoon opening to a backyard winter court. 9

10 COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE CATEGORY #9923 HASSELL Warry Street Studio, Fortitude Valley, QLD: HASSELL This is a beautiful conversion of a bakery into a modern design office using a campus style cloistered courtyard as a device fro extending and opening up the building. Simple construction techniques and raw detailing underpin a variety of spatial experiences all expertly dealing with the adjacent cloister, courtyard and street. #7149 Abigroup House Stanley Street Plaza: Cox Rayner Architects in association with John Mainwaring Set in Southbank, this building embraces the parkland as a beautifully detailed three sided glass box. A crafted stair is the centerpiece of the planning and spatially organizes the floors vertically and horizontally. The integrated fit out design ensures that views are not impeded by perimeter office cubicles. #2089 The Chambers, Corner of Queen and Creek Streets: Donovan Hill and Riddell Architecture Exquisite restoration of the existing NAB bank building benefits from the grafting on of a new office tower. The new and the old are inextricably linked via the shared core, feeding a broad range of workplaces. The ground plan cleverly adapts existing through paths to facilitate future occupation opportunities. #8563 Old Albion Post Office Redevelopment: Colin Trapp and Associates Pty Ltd A great public interface to the street corner is achieved in this building by creating a grand threshold. Spatially interesting and visually exciting, the forecourt gives a great commercial exposure for tenants whilst embracing the street frontages. Simple materials are creatively used and generous overhangs articulate the facades. 10

11 PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE CATEGORY #2481 Berrinba Wetlands Parkland: AR:2 Architecture The architects found opportunities in a brief derived from a palette of simple open parkland structures, offering new recreation opportunities showcasing the surrounding wetlands. The project has re-shaped the public s perception of the local community, so much so it is now influencing the procurement of future projects. #3121 General Purpose North 4: Richard Kirk Architects and ML Design (Architects in association) The General Purpose North 4 building is meticulously crafted, openly expressing the materiality of the building through strong, robust detailing and exceptional workmanship. The building provides a sophisticated blend of spaces, contrasting scales and a captured external landscaped courtyard that openly expresses itself toward the University forecourt. #8827 Holy Spirit Seminary: Conrad Gargett Architecture A modern counterpoint to the existing seminary, this project provides a series of carefully sited buildings derived from the original cloistered building. A restrained material palette with simple, earnest detailing focuses on celebrating thresholds and transitional spaces. The chapel in particular is a beautiful culmination of the journey. #6452 Mater Mother s Redevelopment Project (A) Mater Mother s Hospital (MMH) and (B) Mater Adult Hospital (MAH): BVN Architecture Pty Ltd Derived from a complex program involving operational and decanting complexities, this project maximizes the human aspects within a hospital environment. The creative intervention of an internal orientation court provides a multiplicity of benefits for its occupants. Patient care is realized in a welcome model for future hospital planning. 11

12 #9314 Brisbane Water Scientific Analytical Services Laboratory: HASSELL A surprisingly active laboratory environment is accommodated within a climatically responsive, low cost and efficiently planned solution for laboratory testing. The building provides incidental interactions and visual transparency through offices and lab zones alike. Continuous views to natural daylight, contribute to the workplace amenity clearly enjoyed by the occupants. #9340 International Terminal Brisbane Expansion: BVN Architecture Pty Ltd An extension to an existing complex operational facility based on the successful airport masterplan. The project had to address multiple layers of challenging program requirements and commercial influences. The northern concourse extension in particular responds to the passengers journey and heightening experience of travel.
