1 THE PINNACLE OF AUSTRALIAN RESIDENTIAL DESIGN 2018 HOUSES AWARDS SHORTLIST REVEALED This year marks the eighth annual Houses Awards, celebrating the best of Australian residential architecture and design. Each year, the shortlist provides integral insight into the country s highest calibre of contemporary design and visionary professionals. The 2018 program has seen the highest number of entries, with 477 submissions. This is an increase of 7% on last year. The 2018 shortlist has been revealed and can now be viewed on the Houses Awards website housesawards.com.au The shortlisted projects and eventual winners are selected by an esteemed panel of jurors from across the country Houses Awards jury (left to right): Albert Mo, Kerry Clare, Katelin Butler, Jennie Officer and Stuart Vokes. It s great to see our talented architects and designers experimenting and challenging the status quo, resulting in a series of surprising and delightful architectural moments.
2 The awards celebrate excellence across nine categories, with one home awarded the prestigious title of Australian House of the Year. The awards categories are: New House under 200 square metres New House over 200 square metres House Alteration and Addition under 200 square metres House Alteration and Addition over 200 square metres Apartment or Unit Garden or Landscape House in a Heritage Context Sustainability Emerging Architecture Practice The winner of the Australian House of the Year receives a $5,000 cash prize, while individual categories offer a cash prize of $1,000. The announcement of the 2018 Houses Awards, including the prestigious Australian House of the Year, will be celebrated at the awards gala night held at The Ivy Ballroom in Sydney, on 27 July. Tickets will be available via the Houses Awards website. The winning projects are subsequently published in the August 2018 edition of Houses and made available to view online on Saturday 28 July via the Houses Awards website. 7 2018 JURY The esteemed 2018 jury comprises of: Kerry Clare - Director, Clare Design (NSW) Kerry has been in practice, alongside her husband Lindsay, at Clare Design for more than 30 years. Clare Design s work includes a diverse range of architectural projects, from major urban and public buildings to small self-sufficient remote houses. Architecturally, Clare Design is consistently acknowledged for a rare combination of design excellence and high-level environmental performance. Albert Mo - Director, Architects EAT (VIC) Albert is the director of Architects EAT in Melbourne, which has developed a reputation for residential and apartment projects and also specializing in hospitality and retail sectors. Albert s architectural skills range from creative conceptual design to detailed project design, and his work has been recognised by awards and articles in both Australian and international architecture journals. Jennie Officer - Director, Officer Woods Architects (WA) Jennie is the director of Officer Woods Architects based in Fremantle. The diverse work of the practice has been acknowledged in state and national awards across multiple categories. Jennie is also a Senior Lecturer in the School of Design at the University of Western Australia and the recipient of numerous architectural awards. Stuart Vokes - Director, Vokes and Peters (QLD) Stuart lives, teaches and practices architecture in Brisbane. He is the director of Vokes and Peters, which is known for its private houses and sustained research in suburban Brisbane. The practice is currently working on a range of cultural and commercial projects. Stuart has served as a juror for many prestigious architecture awards and is registered with the Board of Architects in QLD, NSW and WA. Katelin Butler - Editor, Houses magazine Prior to her appointment as editor for Houses magazine, Katelin was the assistant editor of Architecture Australia and wrote book, exhibition and project reviews for the publication. She has co-edited three books and holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Tasmania and a Master of Architecture from the University of Melbourne. Katelin has been a peer juror, guest university critic, exhibition curator and speaker at various industry events. Houses is Australia s leading residential architecture magazine for designers and their clients. Houses presents inspiring residential projects by Australia s best architects and designers. These projects reveal the way that a house, through occupation, becomes a home the architectural ideas, and the people and products behind them.
