11 Beverly Davenport Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost 2614 McMicken Circle 210 Van Wormer Hall Cincinnati, OH (513) October 9, 2014 Dear IIE Heiskell Award Committee, I was delighted to hear about IIE s Andrew Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education. When reading about the Study Abroad category to highlight programs providing innovative programs and services to make study abroad accessible to a broader student population, I immediately thought of our UC Forward: Sustainable Urbanism program. Please accept this letter as my official endorsement for this award. The Sustainable Urbanism study abroad program is part of our UC Forward program. UC Forward is a philosophy, an idea, a re-imagining of what a university experience should be. It is a one-of-a-kind teaching, learning, and research initiative pairing students and faculty with external experts, all from differing perspectives to solve today's problems and develop tomorrow s workforce in unique and relevant ways. The Sustainable Urbanism program takes this innovation a step further by providing a study abroad to China in addition to the on-campus learning. The University of Cincinnati seeks to provide study abroad opportunities to as many of our students as possible. In our Academic Master Plan, ( UC 2019 ), it outlines nine Operational Principles as the road map for the University of Cincinnati as it enters its third century. One of these Operational Principles is Global Engagement. The University of Cincinnati previously established its UC 2019 goal to double the number of UC students participating in study abroad from 800 ( ) to 1,500 ( ). This past academic year UC sent approximately 1,350 students abroad. Inspired by the Institute of International Education s Generation Study Abroad Challenge, UC has raised its personal goal to 1,700 students studying abroad by For , the University of Cincinnati is committing approximately $862,000 to study abroad scholarships and $100,000 for faculty mentoring and development grants. The Sustainable Urbanism study abroad program is the poster child for the University of Cincinnati s educational experience. We would be honored to have it as a model for the International Education community. Sincerely, Beverly Davenport Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

12 College of Design, Architecture, Art and Plann School of Architecture and Interior Design University of Cincinnati PO Box Cincinnati, Oh Phone Fax Web: Dear Dr. Smith I am writing you at this time to give my highest recommendation for Professor Ming Tang receiving the Innovative use of Technology Teaching Award. Professor Tang is a leader in the field of digital design and fabrication in the field of architecture. Educators all over the world are adopting Professor Tangʼs recent book on parametric building design. His impact on the discipline of architecture, and our students continues to grow. Professor Tang is very deserving of this award. His use of technology in the classroom is both inventive and immersive. The use of technology is inventive in that he has set up a non-linear structure of absorbing online content that allows students to learn through inquisition. Professor Tangʼs online content encourages browsing in the same way that searching library stacks often leads to new discoveries. Professor Tangʼs use of technology is also immersive in that it takes advantage of multiple forms of media to address different styles of learning. Lastly, I suspect the way Professor Tang is using technology today will be the standard for all of our classes in the not so distant future. It not only flips the classroom, but also flips the discourse on teaching. It would be difficult for me to overstate the impact Professor Tang has had on both our students in terms of learning opportunities, as well as faculty who are beginning to embrace the use of technology in teaching because of Professor Tangʼs success. I completely support Professor Tang being a recipient of the Innovative Use of Technology Teaching Award, and I look forward to your favorable review. 14 Craig E. Moyer 451 Ludlow Ave. Apt. 110 Cincinnati, Ohio (937) March 30, 2015 To whom it may concern, I am writing this to give my overwhelming support of Assistant Professor Ming Tang to the review committee for his exceptional use of technology in teaching which has provided countless hours of ongoing support and learning opportunities not only for myself but also for countless numbers of students both graduate and undergraduate who have come before and inevitably, after my time at the University of Cincinnati. It was the fall of 2012 when I was introduced to Assistant Professor Tang during my first digital visualization lab courses where I became familiar with his vast constantly updated digital tutorial library. Ming has created and hosted this library on his personal website and has been updating and cataloging the ongoing video tutorials he has produced over the years for a variety of architectural and design software packages. He not only uses this tutorial library in his lectures in class but also keeps the library open to students to view tutorials at any time they wish. This remarkable contribution has unquestionably contributed a great deal to the ongoing education of future designers and architects at UC. It has contributed such a great amount that the library itself has become somewhat of an online repository of tutorials known amongst the students. I would go so far as to say that the tutorial library has become somewhat infamous amongst the students in DAAP, with students referencing Ming's tutorials who may not have even had Mr. Tang as an instructor for a class. It would be easy to stop at the tutorial library as sufficient evidence of his great contribution to teaching, however Mr. Tang's teaching has also lead to academic success for me personally as well. From the courses I took with Ming, as well as the tutorial library I was able to learn a remarkable amount of information on software in short periods of time. Since I was able to learn the software quickly I was also then given opportunities to assist Mr. Tang in research projects that extended well beyond the limits of my architectural coursework. It is with this knowledge that I write in support of Assistant Professor Ming Tang for the Junior Faculty Award for his outstanding commitment to past, present and future students in digital skills, and for his abilities in effectively teaching complex and sophisticated architectural and design software in an easily digestible and engaging fashion. Sincerely, Craig E. Moyer M.Arch candidate 2016

17 Student Letter. Trey Meyer From: Trey Meyer Sent: Tuesday, August 27, :14 PM To: Tang, Ming (tangmg) To Whom It May Concern: It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of support on behalf of Professor Ming Tang. I had the opportunity to be under Professor Tang s supervision in two studio courses, ARCH 203 and ARCH 4002, as well as SAID 294, Computer Skills. During my time in the Architecture program, Ming served as a professor as well as a mentor. He made himself available to students outside of studio hours, keeping an open door to all who had questions. As a professor, Ming ran a very organized and rigorous studio. I was able to easily keep track of the progression throughout the course with Ming s implementation of online tools hosted on his ming3d.com website. He kept an updated online schedule to keep students focused and on task. Ming takes advantage of modern strategies of communication and information sharing through such things as his extensive online tutorial library and archived student blog postings. He capitalizes on his advanced level of understanding using digital tools and simulations to help students rethink the process of problem solving. I experienced this in the capstone studio (ARCH 4002), Computational Adaptation. Professor Tang pushed my limits in design thinking as well as in digital computation and understanding. The support, conversation, and motivation he instilled helped in producing a 1 st Place award in ACSA s Fabric in Architecture student design competition. My personal experiences have seen Professor Tang focusing his diverse educational and professional background into a new perspective of viewing design. He is able to relate his knowledge to students in an understandable fashion, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to benefit from his passion for design. I believe having Professor Ming Tang in the School of Architecture and Interior Design strengthens and promotes the school s continued excellence and I strongly support his reappointment at the University of Cincinnati. 18 Student Letter. Nathaniel Hammitt. From: Nathaniel Hammitt Sent: Wednesday, November 09, :33 PM To: Tang, Ming (tangmg) Ming was my professor for Computer Skills 294 during Fall quarter During his course we completed four projects of varying degrees of difficulty. One of the final projects was to document an existing house and design it in Revit (Revit is one of the Architecture industry's predominant design tools). As I am from South Africa, I chose to model South Africa's famous 10x10 houses for this final project ( Unnamed1.jpg). It was a great experience to model an existing house, and I felt that Ming's ability to astutely instruct me in Revit gave me a leg up on my peers when I went out for co-op in the Summer. And in fact, my goal for co-op was to return to South Africa and work with an esteemed international design firm in Cape Town. While interviewing with various architecture companies, I received an inquiry from DesignSpaceAfrica, one of the most well-esteemed design firms in South Africa. They had noticed my portfolio work, and were very impressed with my models of the 10x10 houses-- which they themselves had designed and constructed in AutoCAD but did not have a model of their own project as good as the one which I had done during Ming's class. After speaking with Luyanda Mpahlwa, the principal and lead designer at DesignSpaceAfrica, and learning that his firm was undergoing an extensive firm-wide transition from AutoCAD to Revit I was asked how well I knew Revit and if I would mind using my skills in the program to teach and help develop their firm's response to the program. Given my background with Ming and the work experience I had on one of their very own projects I said "yes" and they hired me right on the spot! I went on to spend my summer on co-op in Cape Town working with DesignSpaceAfrica and guiding their team through their transition from AutoCAD to Revit - and I was even able to assist them in two design projects, one of which I led and submitted to a national design competition for urban issues in Cape Town. None of this would have been possible had it not been for Ming's class and his concerted efforts to teach me how to better use Revit for practical purposes." You are one of the most inspiring teachers on the campus and your commitment to students and their development of good design does not go unnoticed. I hope that these few words will serve you well as you assemble this report to the school. Thanks again for all you do!
