3 photo: Olivier van den Hoven photo: Yann Martin Prada Aoyama epicenter Minami-Aoyama Tokyo Haute couture and star architecture have grown to understand each other rather well in the recent years Major fashion brands distinguish themselves by inviting world leading architects to indulge themselves in the design of flagshipstores and extravagant showrooms The highest density worldwide of such state of the art showpieces can arguably be found on and around Tokyo's Omotesando One of the most impressive contributions to this phenomenon is the Prada 'epicenter' This 33 meter high building has a façade like a membrane which is built out of wedge shaped elements that frame flat, convex and concave windows These element also form the outer structure of the building Closed horizontal bracings not only make the frame rigid, but also house the more private dressing rooms within this transparent building Everything about the building tells us that money was not an issue But perhaps the most costly design choice of all was to leave a large part of the expensive plot un-built photo: Olivier van den Hoven Floor area/size m² Lighting designer Associate architect Client Herzog and De Meuron Arup Takenaka Corporation Prada Co Ltd olivier_van_den_hoven opened daily from 11am till 8pm (also on Sundays) the Omotesando metrostation is on the Ginza line, the Chiyoda line and the Hanzoumon line Take exit A3 and walk into the street called Minami-Aoyama after a short walk you get to the Prada epicenter 3

4 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Tod's Omotesando Building Jingumae Shibuya-ku Tokyo Toyo Ito s Tod s Omotesando Building is a slender, L-shaped building for the Italian footwear retailer, it contains offices and a boutique fronting Omotesando, Tokyo s famous four-lane, tree-lined boulevard that in recent years has become the city s showplace for luxury brands and top architects The seven-storey building continues Ito's exploration of ideas of surface, the dramatic structure mimicking the shapes of the tall elm trees that stretch along Omotesando Avenue and reinterprets them in its façade as a series of crisscrossing geometric forms The façade is a smooth blend of concrete and glass and materials are kept simple The structural frame that supports the building is well concealed Inside, opaque glass hides the rear view so that shoppers are drawn to the front of the store where they play an important role in animating the building (text from RIBA Royal Gold Medal 2006 award) Floor area/size m² Technical engineer Lighting designer Structural engineer Contractor Client Toyo Ito ES Associates Lightdesign Inc Oak Structural Design Office Takenaka Corporation Holpaf BV MI_MOA photo: Luis Villa del Campo tel

5 photo: Thom Mckenzie Maison Hermès Ginza Tokyo Maison Hermès, Tokyo, by Renzo Piano is the corporate headquarters and retail store for Hermès The program includes offices, workshops, retail and exhibition spaces, multimedia areas and a roof garden The building also includes access to the subway via a courtyard which divides the long façade in two It is an elegant, glowing, rectangular form which has been carefully crafted from specially designed 45cm x 45cm glass blocks which give the impression of the building as a precious object containing equally precious objects Renzo Piano stated that the building was inspired by traditional ese lanterns The thickness of the glass façade blurs the activity within during the day and at night the building glows from the light within whilst simultaneously providing acoustic insulation from the bustling Ginza streets outside Clear glass boxes become display cases for Hermès products at street level Floor area/size m² Client Renzo Piano Hermès thom photo: Thom Mckenzie Monday - Sunday: / Wednesday: closed Take the Hibiya, Marunouchi or Ginza line to Ginza subway station in central Tokyo 5

6 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Dior Ginza Ginza, Chuo-ku Tokyo The Dior flagship store building on Ginza has a distinct multi layered, translucent façade The façade contains two overlapping sheets of aluminium The outer skin is perforated with thousands of large and small holes which subtly reveal the illuminated inner skin, which is also patterned In combination, they replicate the woven pattern of Thonet's famous chair that Christian Dior adapted as his signature motif Contractor Client Kumiko Inui Shimizu Corporation Dior Franks photo: Luis Villa del Campo Take the subway to Ginza station Leave the station at exit A1 and walk in western direction The building is on your left hand 6

7 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Carina Store Minami-Aoyama, Minato-Ku Tokyo php Carina is a children's and mother's clothing store, designed by Kazuyo Sejima The shop is wrapped in two façades The inner façade is made up of a steel structure and large glass windows The outer façade is made out of white expanded metal, similar to the weaves that were used for the New Museum at the Bowery in New York The outer façade covers up almost the complete building, except for the entrance door and one window on the second floor This is a daring approach as it provides an introspective look at first glance But, as in many recent architecture in Tokyo, the shop comes to life when you take a closer look and even more so when dusk falls over the city SANAA Franks photo: Frankss 11:00-19:00 hr (Tue-Fri), 12:00-19:00 (Sat), 12:00-18:00 (Sun) Take Omotesando station, leave it at exit A5 and walk in eastern direction Then take the first street to your right Take the second street to the left The store is then next to the Aveda building 7

8 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Design Sight Akasaka, Minato-ku Tokyo The building is a low-rise structure consisting of one ground floor and one underground floor Because this building, consisting of the café wing and the museum wing, was designed to be public open space within the district plan area, the limitations on the building area and the sun shadow control were very severe As a result, less than 600 square meters are above ground The building has a unique form featuring a roof made from giant steel plates that slope gently down to the ground Once inside, the space opens out on a scale unimaginable given the building's unobtrusive exterior The ground floor houses the entrance and reception area, while the underground floor houses two galleries and a triangular sunken court Highlighting Issey Miyake's concept in clothing design of "A Piece of Cloth," Ando devised the idea for the roof as one sheet of folded steel The building incorporates the longest sheet of double-glazed glass in photo: Frankss Floor area/size m² General consultant Client Tadao Ando Takenaka Corporation Mitsui Fudosan Co, Ltd Franks Daily Closed on Tuesdays Entrance fee 1,000 Take exit 3 at the Nogizaka station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line Walk towards the Garden of the Tokyo Midtown complex via a path lined with grass and trees After 200m the museum is on your left 8

9 photo: Frankss Mikimoto Ginza 2 Chuo-Ku Ginza Tokyo This boutique store is part of the Mikimoto family, one of the most famous names in ese jewellery with a history dating back to 1899 While the main Mikimoto shop is dedicated to high-end jewels, this store focuses on casual fashion baubles and accessories Ito was inspired by the mysteriousness of a jewellery box and imagining bubbles around pearls and floating petals The building also features a lounge and an atrium, which serves as both an exhibition hall and as an area for seminars for women Painted in a subtly sparkling mica-laced pale pink, the four walls are a marvel of engineering Each comprises two 56 m tall steel sheets; manufactured in sections, welded together on-site, and installed barely 20 cm apart With concrete poured between, the steel is strong enough to support the 9 stories Floor area/size m² Main designer, Interior architect Structural engineer Contractor Lighting designer Client Toyo Ito Ichiro Nishiwaki Design Office SSC Sasaki Structural Consultants Taisei Corporation Ushio Spax Co K Mikimoto & Co Ltd Franks Daily 11:00-19:00 Restaurant is open until 2300 Mikimoto is in Ginza (obviously) Take the southern exit (A13) at the Ginza Itchome metro station Walk to the end of the first block and the building should be around the corner 9

11 photo: Christian Beirle González photo: Christian Beirle González Shibuya Station Extension Shibuya 24-1 Shibuya Nichome Tokyo Tadao Ando's Shibuya Station Extension is composed of two prime gestures: an elliptical shell with the span of 256x79 feet, and the connection of that shell to elements of Tokyo's underground station network such as escalators, passages and tunnels, thus making it an integral part of Tokyo's transportation system Tadao Ando's new Shibuya Station extension is all about making travel fun again: "A station should be a place where visitors think "I was glad to come to this station" or?that station was fascinating","ando says, as he examines the three-story atrium of the nearly completed building Ando's design is based on what he calls a "chichusen", or underground spaceship Commuters board the buried flying saucer near the top of the atrium and are carried down to the tracks at its base "Because this station has an atrium from top to bottom, you can easily see where you are it gives you a sense of security," Ando says photo: Christian Beirle González 2008 Tadao Ando christian_02 Shibuya Subway Station - access Fukutoshin, Ginza or Hanzomon Line 11

The National Museum of Western Art is the premier public art gallery in specializing in art from the Western tradition The Museum is located in the museum and zoo complex in Ueno Park in Taito, central Tokyo The museum is square in plan with the main body of the galleries raised on piloti to first floor level The layout is influenced by Le Corbusier's Sanskar Kendra museum in Ahmedabad which was being designed at the same time Entrance for visitors is at ground floor level via the 19th Century Hall This double height space is lit from above with a north glazed pyramidal skylight intersected with reinforced concrete beams and a column On the opposite side of the hall from the entrance, the ascent to the paintings gallery is via a promenade ramp which affords better views of Rodin's sculptures Le Corbusier 13

14 photo: Kisho Kurokawa Nakagin Capsule Tower Ginza Tokyo The Nakagin Capsule Tower is the world's first capsule architecture built for actual use Capsule architecture design, establishment of the capsule as room and insertion of the capsule into a mega-structure, expresses its contemporaneousness with other works of liberated architecture from the later 1960's, in particular England's Archigram Group, France's Paul Memon, and Yona Friedman The Nakagin Capsule Tower takes on the challenge of the issue of whether mass production can express a diverse new quality The Tower also strives to establish a space for the individual as a criticism to the that modernized without undergoing any establishment of an "self" Kurokawa developed the technology to install the capsule units into a concrete core with only 4 high-tension bolts, as well as making the units detachable and replaceable The capsule is designed to accommodate the individual as either an apartment or studio space, and by connecting units can also accommodate a family Floor area/size m² Kisho Kurokawa 14

15 Tokyo Skytree Oshiage Tokyo Tokyo Skytree is a broadcasting, restaurant, and observation tower in Sumida, Tokyo, It became the tallest structure in in 2010 and reached its full height of 6340 metres in March 2011, making it the tallest tower in the world, displacing the Canton Tower, and the second tallest structure in the world after Burj Khalifa (8298 m) The base of the tower has a structure similar to a tripod; from a height of about 350 m and above, the tower's structure is cylindrical to offer panoramic views of the river and the city There are observatories at 350 m, with a capacity of up to 2000 people, and 450 m, with a capacity of 900 peoplethe upper observatory features a spiral, glass-covered skywalk in which visitors ascend the last 5 meters to the highest point at the upper platform A section of glass flooring gives visitors a direct downward view of the streets below Nikken Sekkei 15

16 photo: Tokyotravels Yoyogi National Stadium Jinnan Tokyo Yoyogi National Stadium is an arena in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo, which is famous for its suspension roof design It was designed by Kenzo Tange and built between 1961 and 1964 to house swimming and diving events in the 1964 Summer Olympics A separate annex was used for the basketball competition at those same games It will also host handball competitions at the 2020 Summer OlympicsThe design inspired Frei Otto's arena designs for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich The arena holds 13,291 people and is now primarily used for ice hockey, futsal and basketball Images of the arena are regularly featured at the end of NHK Newsline broadcasts because the NHK World studios are adjacent to the arena along the edge of Yoyogi Park Kenzo Tange 16

17 Nittele Tower Higashishinbashi Tokyo Richard Rogers Partnership won this competition together with Mitsubishi Real Estate Company The new 115,000 m² headquarters building for Nippon Television is situated to the east of Shinbashi Railway Station in the South East Tokyo district of Shiodome; overlooking Tokyo Bay, it is highly visible from approaching bullet trains The design accommodates studios and offices on a tight site by stacking the offices above the studios with public spaces below This arrangement determined the layout that places circulation and structure as "bookends", leaving floorplates as open, flexible spaces The 185 m high complex includes an art gallery, shops, restaurants and public space at ground level that is integrated into a redevelopment masterplan containing buildings designed by Kevin Roche and Jean Nouvel The steel and concrete structure features a form of climate façade for office areas, ensuring solar and comfort control 2003 Main designer, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Mitsubishi Estate 17

18 Tokyo International Forum Marunouchi Tokyo The Tokyo International Forum, 's largest congress center, is situated on the boundary between Marunouchi, Tokyo's central business area and the Ginza shopping and entertainment district The International Forum includes two theaters, one among the largest in the world, over 6,000 square meters of exhibition space, several conference rooms, restaurants, shops and other amenities 1997 Rafael Vinoly s 18

19 Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Nishishinjuku Tokyo The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building houses the headquarters of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which governs not only the 23 wards, but also the cities, towns and villages that make up Tokyo as a whole Located in Shinjuku, the building consists of a complex of three structures, each taking up a city block The tallest and most prominent of the three is Tokyo Metropolitan Main building No1, a tower 48 stories tall that splits into two sections at the 33rd floor The building also has three levels below ground The design of the building Kenzo Tange, has many symbolic touches, most notably the aforementioned split which re-creates the look of a Gothic cathedral The building held the title of the tallest building in Tokyo, at 243 meters from 1991 to late 2006, when it surrendered its title upon the completion of Midtown Tower 1991 Kenzo Tange 19

20 photo: Foster & Partners Century Tower Bunkyo Tokyo Century Tower grew out of a belief that the commercial realities of speculative offices could be reconciled with an architecture of quality and distinction Although it advances ideas first explored in the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, Century Tower is not a corporate headquarters but a prestige office block with a wide range of amenities, including a health club and museum Located in Bunkyo-ku, in the heart of Tokyo, the building occupies a site subject to complex zoning regulations The design response was to divide the tower into two blocks, nineteen and twenty-one storeys high, linked by a narrow atrium The outer form of the blocks is defined by eccentrically braced frames, responding to seismic engineering requirements in a city where earthquakes and typhoons are very real threats Inside, the floors are spaced at double height with suspended mezzanines between them, allowing office spaces to be column-free and to enjoy natural light and views 1991 Foster & Partners 20

21 Koizumi Lighting Theater Kanda Sakumach Tokyo Koizumi Sangyo is a manufacturer of lamps and lighting equipment For this project, the company headquarters in Tokyo, Eisenman worked along with Kojiro Kitayama, who is the half brother of Tadao Ando (yes, the world is a handkerchief) In fact, in the late 80's early 90s, there was a good relationship between Eiseman and Ando,??and the latter introduced him to his brother Koizumi Lighting Theater is 8-storey complex In the first 5 floors, is the exhibition of products, while in the last 3, are the offices Kitayama designed a concrete box, a typical ese office block Eisenman used this structure as context and "attacked" it with a series of small cubes rotated in various directions in space Features of this clash of geometries are evident both inside and outside the building 1990 Main designer, Peter Eisenman Kojiro Kitayama 21

22 photo: Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Kabuki Cho Project Kabukicho Tokyo The Kabuki-cho project provides a vivid example of a response to a very specific urban context - an area of small-scale streets close to Shinjuku commercial district The site was extremely constrained, with daylight a precious commodity in the narrow road onto which the building fronts Although the building is small in scale, great attention was paid to the detailing of the facade, using repetitive functional elements to define the lightweight language of the building The final scheme (after the abandonment of initial plans for a hotel) was a twelve-storey office building (two floors below ground level), its main floors canted out over a void which is infilled with a dramatic glazed roof, lighting a public basement area which contains restaurants and bars The roof is hung off the main structure The frame, engineered in line with local fire safety and seismic protection regulations, is a composite structure of steel and concrete Floor area/size m² Main designer, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners

23 photo: Kajima Design Fuji television Wangan Studio Aomi Tokyo Fuji Television's new studio was part of the broadcaster's plan to commemorate its 50th anniversary The studio makes full use of the latest digital technologies to create a "digital content factory" suitable for a diverse range of media, including dramas and variety programs, but also movies and content for mobile devices By consolidating and expanding its studios in a single location near the head office, Fuji Television has made possible integrated production, from planning and recording through editing and post-production The new studio not only enhances production efficiency and profitability, and improves content creativity and quality, but is also a new landmark for the area alongside Fuji Television's headquarters building The plan for the studio was also part of a private urban renewal project The facility is located along the east side of Symbol Promenade Park, and the design integrates the two to provide a space for various types of events 2010 Kajima Design 23

24 Dentsu Tower Higashishinbashi Tokyo The building houses the corporate offices of Dentsu 48 floors rise to m, it is the eleventh-tallest building in Tokyo and second-tallest in Shiodome It was designed by Jean Nouvel and completed in 2002 It was built over the site of Tokyo's first train station, and sits aside the Hamarikyu Gardens, formerly the site of a Shogun's vacation home The Dentsu building is an example of contemporary architecture, featuring collectors on the roof to utilize rainwater for its plumbing system, as well as ceramic dots on the windows which, in concert with computerized window shades, control climate control expediture The Dentsu building has 70 elevators, including a special elevator reserved only for VIPs and executive management 2002 Main designer, Jean Nouvel Jerde Partnership International Obayashi Corporation 24

25 RAGTAG Jingumae Tokyo RAGTAG means RAG = worn out TAG = label RAGTAG is a second-hand clothes shop The building was designed by Kazuyo Sejima (SANAA), the elevation with frosted glass perfectly characterizes her minimalist style 2003 SANAA 25

27 Post Tower Marunouchi Tokyo Post Tower, a 38-story high-rise building designed by Helmut Jahn's Chicago firm in collaboration with Mitsubishi Jishu Sekkei, will hold its official grand opening for all commercial space Friday, March 21, 2013 The high-rise corporate headquarters was rebuilt on the site next to the historic Tokyo Station The new tower will house the Tokyo Central Post Office, an academic and cultural museum, commercial facility KITTE, a retail galleria of nearly one hundred shops and restaurants, state-of-the-art business offices, and more Helmut Jahn photo: Helmut Jahn s 27
